Chapter 214: The Emperor? Okay, America Can Disband
The President's ridiculous gesture and performance did not amuse the Vice President or the other officials in front of him.
After everyone exchanged glances, CIA Director Wesley adjusted his glasses and spoke in a deep voice.
"I'm sorry, Mr. President, but this is not a movie. It is real."
"Real?"
The President laughed from sheer anger. He pointed at Matthew, whose figure and face could not be seen clearly on the screen. "This guy cosplaying Jesus is real?"
"Then what are we?"
"A living god? OMG, wonderful. I think America can disband now."
The President was furious to the extreme—or perhaps, frightened to the extreme.
After saying that, he leaned back in his expensive leather chair and rubbed the space between his brows.
In truth, the moment the President saw this video, he had already believed it.
What convinced him was the sight of the Astartes and Raven praying in the footage.
The impact caused by the Manhattan incident was something the President himself had been following closely. Most of the data and reports had long since been placed on his desk, and that familiar power armor and those outfits were undeniable evidence.
The terrifying, maddening troops that had made him and the leaders of many countries wary had actually appeared in the territory of Sokovia, a tiny country he had barely even heard of.
And now there was an Emperor who seemed to possess powers like Jesus.
Just look at that name: The Emperor.
Listen to the words in the prayers of the Astartes, Raven, and Grey Knights.
We shall raise our weapons high to trample the nests of heretics and sever the claws of the alien, letting the Emperor's prestigious name echo through every corner.
If we fight, we shall bleed dry for the sacred path; if we die, our souls shall return to the holy soil of Terra.
And then there was that phrase: For Terra! For the Emperor!
Excellent. That made the President even more certain.
Wasn't this exactly the kind of rhetoric used by cult leaders to indoctrinate their followers?
What were they trying to do?
Unify Earth?
Then what would that make him—the President of the most powerful country in the world?
A heretic to be purged?
That was the true source of the President's fear and disbelief.
Because he was afraid, he refused to believe it.
Unfortunately, the President understood that this was reality. Whether he wanted to or not, he had to face it.
The Vice President and the other senior officials understood his current mood very well.
Because they were the same.
They were afraid too.
Sokovia was only a small place, one they had barely paid attention to before. The problem was that the powerful, mysterious army was something else entirely.
During the Manhattan incident, the fragments of data displayed by the two warbands had long since been calculated and simulated countless times, leading to one conclusion.
Every single one of them was a superhuman whose movement speed started at the speed of sound.
And they could fucking fly around in the sky too.
Especially that one.
The one who had shattered the sky over Manhattan with a single punch, instantly clearing out tens of thousands of monsters suspected to be demons.
The peak energy released in that instant was something they did not even dare look at directly.
One had to understand that those demons had already been investigated on-site by intelligence agencies, and the conclusion was that each of them was bulletproof. Bullets could not pierce their skin.
Any one of them could casually fire an energy beam and blast straight through a building.
Tens of thousands of monsters like that had been wiped out by a single punch.
How did America's proudest and strongest military compare?
Most likely, it was nothing more than something that could be solved with one punch as well.
If that so-called Emperor truly developed ambitions toward America, how were they supposed to fight him?
What method did they have to resist an army of monsters like that?
And that was without even mentioning the power this mysterious Emperor had now displayed.
In an instant, he had covered the entire territory of Sokovia and brought down those golden dandelions, seemingly healing the Sokovian people's illnesses and suffering.
What level of power was that?
Just thinking about it sent a chill down their backs.
It was not that they were making wild assumptions. It was precisely because they themselves were that kind of people. If they had the chance and the ability, they would seize and invade without hesitation.
What was simpler and more brutal than plunder?
They knew better than anyone how America had become rich and powerful.
That was why they all felt guilty.
"Mr. President, I believe the first thing we must do now is stop all operations targeting Sokovia," the Vice President said.
The Sokovia of now was no longer the Sokovia of before. In the past, they could export ideology, keep Sokovia trapped in opposition and civil unrest, send in disasters and weapons, then use that to plunder resources and money.
That would no longer work.
If they angered this mysterious Terra Empire, if they angered that mysterious Emperor, then forget starting a war. Even if the other side casually sent a few super soldiers to carry out assassinations, none of them could withstand it.
"Yes, yes, yes. Stop them immediately. They must be stopped."
The President reacted as well and quickly agreed.
"We may also need to send diplomats to attempt talks with their government and see what demands the Terra government has," the Secretary of State suggested at the same time.
Sokovia?
What Sokovia?
After seeing that grand performance, he had already determined that Sokovia was a thing of the past.
Now, it was undoubtedly Terra.
As for whether it needed international recognition, he had not even considered it.
International influence?
Military power was influence.
And Terra just happened to possess unmatched military power—power everyone knew could crush the entire world. That meant they did not need so-called international recognition.
They themselves were influence.
So this diplomatic meeting was to determine what the Terra government wanted to do. As long as they could open dialogue, they could learn some information from it, and only then could they make later judgments and plans.
"Fine. I'll leave that to you, James."
The President continued nodding.
After agreeing, he looked toward the Secretary of Defense, who had remained silent the entire time, and asked in a deep voice, "Pierce, what do you think?"
"Mr. President, although I'm reluctant to admit it, I believe we cannot make any unnecessary moves. We can call up and mobilize troops for defense, but we cannot provoke them."
Pierce, who had already recovered from his shock, gave a conservative proposal with confidence in his heart.
Pierce had never imagined that those mysterious and powerful soldiers he had been searching for would suddenly run to Sokovia and establish themselves there. But whether for HYDRA's revival or for the sake of stability, he would not make an aggressive decision.
"Good. Then that's what we'll do."
The President stood from his seat and slapped both hands on the desk before him. Leaning slightly forward, he looked at the senior officials in front of him and spoke solemnly.
"We are now facing an unprecedented crisis. Perhaps what stands before us is an opponent beyond our knowledge and understanding."
"We must mobilize every force we have to understand this potential enemy. We need to know what this Terra, and this Emperor, truly want."
"If they are guardians of Earth, then why have they occupied Sokovia at this moment? Learn about them—without provoking them."
"And if they truly want war, then we have no retreat."
