Chapter 201: The Road to Empire
While she was happy, after more than two months of training, Domino had finally understood the true reason the Astartes and Raven Warbands were so powerful.
She had also come to understand just how terrifying soldiers of that level truly were.
After only a little more than two months of training, her physical strength had already reached around seventy tons.
Her roommates, Christine and Angela, were even more terrifying. It was said they had already exceeded eighty tons.
That could be considered an advantage brought by innate physical talent.
Christine especially. Combined with her mutant ability to actively stimulate adrenaline, that power had been raised even further. It was practically like entering Second Gear.
In fact, Domino had already heard that Christine was trying to figure out how to make better use of that ability.
Developing something like Second Gear, Third Gear, and so on.
Yes, very terrifying.
She had seen what that woman looked like after activating her ability. She was a living female demon.
Extremely terrifying.
Domino definitely did not want someone like that as an opponent. She fought like a madwoman, but beneath that madness was precision and cunning.
Anyone who became her enemy would definitely have a terrible time.
The reason Domino had been separated from her other roommates was that she and Anastasia had been assigned to the Grey Knights Warband.
The other two had been assigned to the Raven Warband.
In truth, Domino wanted to complain that Christine should have joined the Astartes.
After all, that woman was far too suited for the Astartes.
Unfortunately, the Astartes had a specific requirement. They only needed male warriors. However, there were rumors that Christine seemed to be under special attention, and that she had a chance to undergo later selection and join the Adeptus Custodes (Royal Guard).
That was no ordinary honor.
The concept of the Adeptus Custodes had already been revealed.
The most promising, mature, and powerful soldiers would be selected from the Astartes, Raven, and Grey Knights Warbands to join the Adeptus Custodes that protected Leader Matthew.
There were only thirteen slots.
Without question, to any soldiers of the three Warbands, this was an honor they could not refuse.
Domino was the same. Ever since they learned that the Adeptus Custodes selection would take place, everyone had been training with all their might, hoping to be noticed and stand out from the rest.
Her thoughts began to drift.
Domino quickly shook off the distracting thoughts, refocused her mind, and entered meditation. After all, physical training was done during the day, while magical training took place at night.
Compared with the other two Warbands, one of the Grey Knights' main focuses was magic. As a result, their physical training tended to lag slightly behind the other two Warbands.
Some time later, Domino suddenly opened her eyes as the watch on her wrist gave a faint vibration. She glanced at the high-tech wristwatch, and a ray of light projected from it.
A holographic display, roughly the size of a tablet, appeared before her.
Two lines of text were displayed on it.
"Mission One: Cooperate with five Astartes and Raven warriors and proceed to Sokovia.
Mission Difficulty: A-rank. Accept mission?"
"Accept."
Domino didn't hesitate. After glancing at the gathering point displayed upon accepting the mission, she rose to her feet, took nothing with her, and headed straight out of the dormitory, leaving the other three Grey Knights still deep in meditation.
Braving the cold wind and heavy snow, she made her way through the darkness toward the base's main building.
Although it was called the main building, it was, in truth, only three stories tall.
There was no one else around at this hour, but faint sounds drifted in from the distance. Domino knew they came from the Astartes and the Ravens, who were still training.
She took the elevator to the third floor of the main building. There were quite a few people moving back and forth through the corridor here, mostly clerks.
When they saw Domino, the clerks only nodded respectfully.
She continued all the way to the conference room on the third floor.
At the entrance was an iron door. By the time she arrived, the door had already opened automatically.
Domino was not surprised and walked inside.
The conference room was not large. The lights were very bright, and the furnishings had a distinctly modern feel.
There was only one person inside.
The Grey Knights Commander, Needy.
Needy was dressed a little more maturely today, wearing a black turtleneck sweater and trousers that highlighted her fiery figure. She also wore gold-rimmed glasses.
In truth, this was entirely Jennifer's work.
Domino did not know that. She only felt that this young Commander had a very striking presence.
"Commander."
After entering, Domino walked up to Needy, stood with her feet slightly apart, and placed her right fist gently against her chest. It was different from the Astartes' louder, more fervent fist-to-chest salute.
In this regard, the Warbands were mostly similar, differing only in the small details.
"Domino, headquarters has issued a mission. You will travel to Sokovia with five Astartes and Raven soldiers," Needy said. "For this mission, you will serve in a support role and must obey the orders of the Astartes squad commander."
"Your mission is intelligence gathering, not combat. Understood?"
"Understood!"
After discipline was carved into her bones, Domino had gained the same concise and capable manner as a soldier.
"Good. This is the coordinate. Go."
Needy did not waste words. She reached out, and a golden particle emerged before sinking into Domino's body.
A piece of information immediately appeared in Domino's mind.
It was a coordinate anchor.
It would also be the destination she needed to reach.
Domino lowered her head slightly in acknowledgment, then turned to leave. With a casual wave of her right hand, a portal crackling with fiery sparks appeared before her just as she took her first step. She stepped through it, and the portal vanished behind her.
After watching her leave, Needy reached up and removed her glasses. No longer putting on an act, she muttered in dissatisfaction, "Jennifer, these things are in the way."
"Wow, Needy, don't forget you wore glasses in school too, nerd."
A blue figure appeared in front of Needy.
With a fiery figure and a delicate, charming face, it was none other than Jennifer. She was dressed exactly the same as Needy at that moment, two great beauties with different temperaments but identical outfits.
If other men saw this, their eyes would probably pop out.
Jennifer's teasing made Needy roll her pretty eyes.
"My eyesight was bad back then, so I had to wear them, okay?"
"No, no, no. This is different from back then, Needy. You're a Commander now. You need your own distinctive style. You need a presence that convinces people, not the attitude of some little girl," Jennifer said confidently, wagging her finger.
"I don't need these things to decorate my presence." Needy retorted. But when she saw the almost perverted look in Jennifer's beautiful eyes as she stared at her, she felt helpless and took the initiative to change the subject.
"Jennifer, have you finished researching your new teleportation magic?"
"I have a preliminary idea, but it still needs further refinement. Trust me, if it's completed, it'll definitely give BOSS a huge surprise."
"I only think it's unnecessary. Kamar-Taj's teleportation magic is already excellent, simple and practical."
"No. Precisely because it is simple and practical, it is not worthy of us. We need a more dazzling entrance, one that suits our aura."
