Chapter 193: Luke Cage’s Admiration and Jessica Jones
On the sofa in an old living room, Frank slowly opened his eyes. But the moment he woke, he instantly became alert and instinctively reached for his gun.
Only to find nothing.
"You're awake?" a deep voice sounded beside Frank just as he was about to get up.
Then a strong Black man in a black T-shirt and jeans walked over with a glass of water in his hand.
Frank stared at him coldly. "Luke Cage. I've heard of you."
"I've heard of you too. The famous Punisher. You've caused quite a bit of noise these past few days," Luke Cage said, unconcerned by Frank's vigilance. He handed the glass over, then sat down opposite him with no sign of guarding himself.
Frank took it. He slowly sat up and lowered his head to glance at the bandages wrapped around his body.
With his years of combat experience, he could tell that the bullets originally left inside him had been dug out.
Clearly, Luke had done it.
Luke had saved him.
After a moment of silence, Frank drank the water in one gulp and said, "Thanks. I have to go." He grabbed his Punisher suit from the sofa beside him and began putting it on, ready to leave.
But Luke spoke again. "You caused a lot of trouble. Leaving now isn't smart."
Frank's hand paused as he dressed, but then he continued. After putting on the shirt with the skull painted over several bullet holes, he saw Luke holding out a phone in front of him.
He took it and glanced at the screen.
On the phone was news about the Irish mafia's underground club, the one he had massacred.
"The NYPD and the Irish are both looking for you like crazy," Luke said in a low voice.
He did not like killing, so he did not particularly like the Punisher's style. But he had to admire the man's willpower and combat ability.
Luke could tell that the Punisher was just an ordinary person.
Luke himself had awakened abilities because of an accident. He possessed strength and speed far beyond ordinary people, as well as a bulletproof body.
But the Punisher had nothing.
Only weapons.
Going against the people of Hell's Kitchen alone, again and again—this kind of courage, nerve, and execution was not something an ordinary person could possess.
So when Luke accidentally found Frank unconscious and saw the iconic outfit on him, he brought him back.
"I know. I'm looking for them too," Frank said.
Frank was not afraid, because his heart had long since died, so there was no fear left in him.
There was only revenge.
He was a killing machine driven by vengeance, one that killed every wicked sinner.
"People are digging for you everywhere now. Besides the Irish, the other gangs are looking for you too. They've put a bounty on you. And you're badly wounded. If you go out now, you're just walking to your death," Luke said, unwilling to let the Punisher die just like this.
Frank listened to Luke and silently nodded.
He was not afraid of death, but that did not mean he liked throwing his life away.
Unless death was certain, he could drag a group of people down with him. But if he had the chance to live, Frank was more willing to stay alive.
As long as he lived one more day, he could send more people who deserved to die down to hell.
Still...
"They'll follow my trail sooner or later and find this place. I'll drag you into it," Frank said with a frown.
"Maybe I can ask someone for help."
Luke thought of someone and spoke with some uncertainty.
"Who?" Frank asked.
"A girl."
Luke thought of the girl he had met back then. She also possessed strength beyond ordinary people. That night, he had happened to see her stop several thugs from robbing a mother and daughter.
Luke had helped, and afterward, the two occasionally ran into each other a few more times.
Once, when he stormed into a gang, she had even helped him.
So the two had exchanged contact information.
Luke took back his phone and dialed a number.
After quite a while, the call finally connected, and a lively voice came through.
"Hey, big guy. Why are you suddenly calling me?"
"Jessica."
Hearing that voice, Luke, a man who was usually quiet and reserved, revealed a smile.
That's right. It was Jessica Jones.
Luke had a good impression of Jessica.
However, he seemed to hear Jessica panting.
This gave Luke a very bad feeling all of a sudden. His expression immediately became a little complicated. Frank, who had been watching him from the sofa, showed a question-mark expression.
Something going on?
Although Frank did not care about many things, he was now somewhat interested.
Frank decided to enjoy the gossip.
So he quietly perked up his ears and listened carefully.
"Uh, what are you doing, Jessica? You haven't come back yet?" The honest big man did not know how to ask and was somewhat clumsy with his words.
Actually, a few days ago, on the night of the Manhattan incident, Luke had called Jessica.
Jessica had said that she had left New York and joined an organization with enormous power. As for what kind of organization it was, she had not explained.
That had made Luke feel a little disappointed at the time.
"I'm training, big guy. Next time we meet, I'll definitely shock you with how much I've changed. Haha."
Since Jessica had not gone through tragedy, she was still a carefree girl with a bit of a fiery temper.
Naturally, she had not noticed that this big man she had only met a few times had actually developed a trace of affection for her.
"I'm looking forward to seeing you next time, Jessica. But this time, I'm asking for help."
"Mm-hm? What happened to you?"
"Have you heard of the Punisher?" When it came to serious matters, Luke became earnest.
"Of course. The Grim Reaper of Hell's Kitchen, the elusive superstar."
Jessica really had heard of him.
When she first made her debut in Hell's Kitchen, she had already known about this person. He specialized in causing trouble for the gangs. Compared to the Punisher, who easily killed dozens at a time, what she did was just small-time stuff.
"What happened to him?"
Luke told Jessica everything. The chaos the Punisher had caused, how he had saved the Punisher, and how both the Punisher and he were now in some trouble.
Luke was not a pretentious person.
Whenever possible, he solved many things himself.
It was just that the Punisher's matter had become rather big, and he had happened to run into it. A moment of soft-heartedness led him to save the Punisher, and now he had been dragged into it too.
Luke was not afraid of being implicated. After all, he was quite confident in his own abilities.
A group of gangsters with guns could not pose much of a threat to him.
But what Luke worried about was the neighbors and friends around him being dragged into it.
That was why he asked Jessica for help.
Of course, he was also hiding a tiny selfish thought, hoping this matter could deepen his connection with Jessica.
Jessica did not understand the little thoughts of this big man Luke. She was very straightforward.
In Jessica's eyes, Luke could be considered a friend. Otherwise, they would not have exchanged phone numbers. As for the gangs of a small Hell's Kitchen, they were nothing much to the current Jessica.
"Small problem. Wait for my news. I'll call you back in about ten minutes."
