Chapter 179: To Hell with God
The girl's eyes shone brightly. She bit her lip, then finally reached out with her scarred, fair hand and placed it on Matthew's palm.
Lilith, on the other hand, was visibly agitated.
She was the Queen of Hell.
As an ancient primordial demon who commanded legions of demons, she stood second only to figures like Lucifer and Mephisto among Hell's lords. In Hell, she was undoubtedly a major figure.
On Earth, however, she did not carry the same weight.
The reason was Matthew.
Matthew was a human from Earth, not even twenty years old.
Yet recently, he had become one of the most famous people in Hell.
The mighty Mephisto had suffered a setback on Earth. Even when his own son, Blackheart, was captured, he had not dared let out a single fart.
Many things were not considered secrets in Hell.
Hell had its own intelligence network.
And that intelligence network was powerful. As long as one was willing to pay, it could obtain plenty of extremely ancient and highly confidential information.
The importance of intelligence was the same whether for humans or other races.
Hell and Heaven planted spies, bought traitors, and did all kinds of similar things against each other, all for the sake of obtaining information.
Matthew's rise had been too dazzling.
He had stepped completely on Mephisto's head and risen to the front-page headlines of Hell.
Even a great figure like Dormammu had suffered a loss at Matthew's hands. That was also why, after Matthew came looking for her, Lilith's attitude had seemed rather humble.
Noticing how tactful Lilith was being, Matthew narrowed his eyes. "I thought you would be a little tougher."
"Being tough won't help me achieve my goal. It would only make the future guardian of Earth target me. That deal isn't worth it."
Lilith lowered her hand and looked at the timid girl, Carrie, beside Matthew.
She said with regret, "What a pity. I wasn't able to guide such an outstanding descendant into fully awakening her bloodline. She was born to be a witch."
"Awaken her bloodline using your method, and make her lose herself?" Matthew sneered.
There were benefits, but what about the cost?
More often than not, the price was a drastic change in personality, the loss of one's original self.
That was how demons did things.
They never cared about the so-called self. What they pursued was only power.
Because power was truth.
As for cruelty and other negative traits, those were the foundation demons needed to survive.
Kindness, inferiority, cowardice—in Hell, those were the same as being useless. They would only make one be used, schemed against, drained of all value, then die miserably after being skinned and torn apart.
If Carrie were in Hell, then yes, that might be fine.
The problem was that Carrie was now on Earth, and Matthew had taken an interest in this girl with extraordinary potential. In that case, a Carrie whose personality had completely changed was not needed at all.
Lilith understood this.
She did not hate Matthew for taking away her descendant. Meaningless hatred would only consume her from within.
Demons had never been ones to waste themselves like that.
Lilith had lived for countless years. As a top demon from ancient times, she understood this even more clearly.
"We will meet again, Carrie."
After looking deeply at Carrie, Lilith left completely.
Matthew did not stop her.
Because her escape speed was simply too fast. The demons' greatest skill was knowing exactly when to run.
Whenever they encountered someone they could not beat and their attitude was still firm, they would flee immediately without giving the other party any chance.
As the Queen of Hell, Lilith had already maxed out this skill.
The moment Matthew threw her into the Mirror Dimension, Lilith had already escaped. Only a fragment of her consciousness remained inside Margaret's body.
"A demon, Carrie. There really is a demon living inside your body."
"You need purification."
"God hates evil."
Margaret's consciousness returned. With a crazed face, she shouted at Carrie.
Carrie stared blankly at her mother. Her lips moved, but she did not know what to say.
Carrie had no father.
Her father had died long ago, leaving only mother and daughter behind, and her mother was an extreme believer.
Carrie's abilities had erupted unconsciously before. Hail had fallen from the sky. Stones had smashed through their house. When she was an infant, her milk bottle would float on its own.
Because of this, Margaret had become certain that she was a demon.
Carrie often could not understand why her mother treated her this way, even after she started going to school.
As a result, grievance and anger had been constantly building deep inside Carrie's heart.
That was exactly what Lilith had hoped for. She wanted Carrie to unleash that anger. To achieve that, Lilith tempted her and forced her to watch as she manipulated ordinary people into murdering other innocents.
Carrie could only follow behind and hide in some corner, while Lilith hoped the bloodshed would ignite the anger within her.
What Lilith had never expected, however, was that Carrie was simply too kind.
So kind that although the power hidden within her body had awakened, she used it to resist Lilith and save those innocent people instead.
Unfortunately, Carrie was still far too weak compared with Lilith.
Now Margaret's madness only made Carrie feel even more wronged.
Seeing this, Matthew reached out and placed a hand on Carrie's head.
Carrie looked up at him blankly. He chuckled softly.
"Don't listen to her. To hell with God. You are you. No one gets to define who you are."
"Carrie, it's time to make your choice."
…
Carrie spent a dreamlike night.
In the end, Carrie made her choice. She wanted to leave this place, to leave the place that had oppressed and tormented her for more than ten years.
She wanted to follow Matthew.
