Chapter 163: George Stacy and the Melee in Times Square [BONUS CHAPTER]

The chaos in Manhattan drew the attention of every side.

This time, the U.S. government's response was unexpectedly swift. Because the people affected were not only those at the bottom of Manhattan, but also the wealthy who lived there, as well as quite a few government officials.

So the National Guard had already begun mobilizing.

The U.S. Northern Command and the Coast Guard were also deployed one after another.

Everyone could see that this was a disaster.

Although those monsters had been effectively contained within Manhattan, who knew how long the unknown mysterious force resisting them could hold out?

No one wanted this disaster to spread beyond Manhattan.

If New York failed to hold against this disaster and fell, then leaving aside whether it could be contained afterward, the most immediate result would be a sharp crash in the U.S. economy. It might even collapse entirely, and perhaps would not recover for many years.

Unless there was only one choice left.

Launch a nuclear bomb, flatten Manhattan, and wipe out those monsters.

That would minimize the losses.

Was that possible? No one could say for sure.

No one in the White House Oval Office dared to directly give that order. The risk was too great.

Regardless of whether it succeeded or failed, the person who ordered the nuclear launch would be nailed to the pillar of shame and cursed for generations.

Manhattan had several million people.

No one dared to take that blame.

Most importantly, all of them wanted to know exactly where this human armed force fighting those monsters had come from.

Because of that, no one caused any additional trouble for the moment.

Inside the conference room of the Triskelion Headquarters.

Director Nick Fury was still wearing that same leather windbreaker he never seemed to change out of. Looking at the images on the projection screen, his brows were tightly furrowed.

Clearly, the sudden outbreak of the Manhattan incident had exceeded his expectations.

Not only him, even HYDRA leader Alexander Pierce was giving orders.

He mobilized the U.S. Northern Command and the 82nd Airborne Division to surround Manhattan, while also deploying Apache attack helicopters and F-22 fighter jets to intervene at any moment.

After giving the orders, Pierce watched the real-time footage transmitted from the scene.

Like Nick Fury, he now had one common thought: wait.

Pierce currently did not know that his memories had already been modified twice. He had forgotten the leader he had once pledged loyalty to. He had forgotten Neagley.

He had forgotten many things.

Within the modified memories, Neagley had fabricated a reasonable explanation for everything.

For example, the Winter Soldier Bucky. In his memory, Bucky had been sent out to carry out a long-term solo infiltration and assassination mission, and would not return for a very long time.

Every unreasonable detail had been carefully woven into a reasonable memory by Neagley.

Pierce was still the leader working to revive HYDRA.

But while he and Nick Fury were fighting openly and secretly, they had both been caught completely off guard tonight.

He folded his arms across his chest.

This situation was not what he wanted to see. What he hoped for was to develop in the dark, silently strengthen HYDRA's power, occupy the upper levels of America, and then complete control over the United States from the top down.

Finally, he would complete Project Insight and rule the entire Earth through absolute threat.

But now, his plan had fallen apart.

Could Project Insight really deal with those monsters?

Would it work against that mysterious armored soldiers force fighting the monsters?

In this current information age, such an army with superpowered combat units existed, yet he had not received even the slightest information about it.

Pierce was not boasting. With the massive power he had built by parasitizing S.H.I.E.L.D. and the United States, his reach also covered the entire world.

As long as there was the slightest abnormality, such as unusual financial movements in certain countries or detected spikes in abnormal energy, he would more or less be able to catch it.

After all, to put it nicely, S.H.I.E.L.D. maintained Earth's stability and peace.

To put it bluntly, it monitored the entire world.

So HYDRA, which had parasitized itself within S.H.I.E.L.D., effectively possessed that same massive surveillance network.

And yet tonight, two completely unknown things had appeared all at once.

It was far too abnormal.

A strange look flashed deep in Pierce's eyes. If he could possess a force like this, his progress in ruling Earth would advance greatly.

He had to obtain information.

…

Manhattan had descended into complete chaos. It was not only the Astartes and Raven Warbands fighting; the NYPD and the gangs had also joined the battle.

Although the police in America were, in a sense, a private violent organization, and in terms of law enforcement, their own interests ultimately came first, they were still in Manhattan. With monsters everywhere, the NYPD could not escape either. They had to fight. Even if not to protect civilians, then at least to protect themselves.

The gangs were the same.

Before the monsters descended, some mysterious power had greatly amplified everyone's desire to commit crimes, causing violent incidents and crimes to break out.

But once the monsters arrived, and while they had not completely lost reason, compared with looting or committing crimes, they were more inclined to kill those monsters first.

They were too terrifying.

Every police officer in Manhattan fought along the entire line. Aside from the initial chaos, they were soon organized under the command of Police Commissioner George Stacy.

They sealed off the Empire State Building, Times Square, Fifth Avenue, Wall Street, and the Brooklyn Bridge, evacuating and protecting civilians while carrying out street combat.

To set an example, Commissioner George went to Times Square, the place with the densest crowd, to oversee the situation.

Times Square, originally one of New York's landmarks, had now been engulfed in war.

Under the efforts of the NYPD, countless civilians were being organized and protected in an orderly manner. George was extremely sharp and did not let the civilians enter buildings.

Because those monsters were far too destructive. Even casual attacks from them could pierce through reinforced concrete buildings.

Unless the civilians hid in underground facilities, buildings were not safe.

Originally, open areas were even more dangerous. But from the beginning, those soldiers in heavy armor had consciously guided them to do this.

Those soldiers were outrageously powerful. They could even effectively kill the monsters in the sky.

They had actually formed an airtight protective barrier, preventing the monsters from harming the civilians.

At night, the streets and open square of Times Square were packed with people.

Thousands of NYPD officers protected the civilians from the outside. At the very front of all the officers stood middle-aged Police Commissioner George in his uniform, holding a Remington 870 shotgun.

Together with all the officers, he stared fixedly ahead, occasionally raising his gun and pulling the trigger at the sky.

In front of them, dozens of Astartes were slaughtering the attacking demons with their weapons.

The one leading them was none other than Reacher.

Clad in heavy power armor, Reacher gripped a huge one-handed battle axe engraved with magical runes in his metal gauntlet and brought it down fiercely at the dozens of demons rushing madly toward him.

Boom!!

In an instant, a crimson slash dozens of meters long tore across the ground, cutting every demon in its path cleanly in half.

The soldiers warriors fought in much the same way.

But the demons seemed endless, impossible to wipe out completely. At that moment, a figure fell from the sky like a meteor, landing on a demon that had tried to attack Reacher and crushing it beneath her foot. The ground cracked open in a wide area.

It was Neagley.

She coolly raised her beloved Colt M1911 revolver, aimed it at the demon's head, and pulled the trigger.

An orange-yellow energy bullet shattered the demon's skull.
