Chapter 155: Praise the Emperor, Praise Magic
"Betrayed light and justice?"
Kaecilius seemed amused. A smile rose on that sinister face.
"What is light? What is justice? And what is darkness?"
"Mordo, I was once just like you. I treated light and justice as faith, as the only meaning of my life, until I discovered that they were nothing but fabricated lies."
Perhaps feeling that the outcome was already sealed, Kaecilius, despite having surrounded Mordo and Wong, was in no rush to strike. Instead, he began to speak at great length.
Wong's eyes flickered slightly. Seeing Kaecilius like this, he secretly breathed a little easier.
He knew that he and Mordo would definitely not be a match for this group.
Delaying for time was the best option.
Mordo, however, was not thinking about anything else. To him, Kaecilius's words were blasphemy.
Anger appeared on his dark-skinned face. He stared straight at Kaecilius and growled, "Kaecilius, you have blasphemed the sacred. You have blasphemed the Sorcerer Supreme, and you have blasphemed every sorcerer who ever sacrificed themselves for protection and peace."
"You have blasphemed their nobility, yet you still stand here speaking so grandly."
The furious Mordo wanted nothing more than to attack Kaecilius and destroy this traitor.
Kaecilius knew Mordo was stubborn. But it was precisely someone like this who, once he betrayed them, would strike an even heavier blow against those so-called righteous sorcerers and the so-called Sorcerer Supreme.
So Kaecilius did not get angry. Instead, he shook his head and said something that changed both Wong and Mordo's expressions.
"You don't truly think the Ancient One is that great and selfless, do you?"
"Did she ever tell you that while pretending to be a guardian of justice, she has been secretly drawing on the power of darkness?"
This news stunned not only Mordo. Even Wong, whose emotions were usually steady, could no longer hold himself back.
He had originally stood back-to-back with Mordo, but now he suddenly turned and stood beside him, facing Kaecilius directly. He stared at Kaecilius, his voice icy. "Kaecilius, you betrayed the light and threw yourself into darkness. Now you are shameless enough to slander the Sorcerer Supreme."
"She was once your teacher. She has also guarded this world for seven hundred years. For seven hundred years, she kept Earth from being invaded by those damned things."
"Your family, your lover, and your child were all once beneficiaries of that."
Although Wong did not have Mordo's obsession with justice, his respect for the Ancient One was no less than anyone else's.
He knew very well that the sacred and lofty title of Sorcerer Supreme had been earned through the Ancient One's seven hundred years of perseverance.
Who could fight those evils continuously for seven hundred years?
Among them were no shortage of powerful beings, even some not weaker than Dormammu.
And yet such a great guardian was now being slandered by a disciple she had once personally taught and placed hopes upon.
Kaecilius fell silent under Wong's words.
Not out of shame. Instead, he burst into mad laughter. "Hahahaha! Beneficiaries? Teacher?"
"Well said, Wong."
"You're right. She was indeed once great. But it was exactly that greatness that made you, and the old me, never think to question her."
"No one would believe she could do such a thing."
"But."
Kaecilius's voice suddenly stopped there. His mad laughter came to an abrupt end, and he gritted his teeth as he roared, "But she did do it."
"She once told me that darkness was evil. That darkness would devour everything, bringing misfortune and destruction."
"She also once said that eternity was a kind of spirit, a beacon. But I don't need something imaginary like that."
"I want my lover and my child to live. I want eternal life. She deceived me."
"She is too weak. She is the great Sorcerer Supreme, but her body is only mortal. She is dying. She fears death. That is why I saw with my own eyes that she was drawing on darkness to extend her life."
Every word of Kaecilius's roar was deafening.
It left Wong and Mordo speechless.
The two stared at Kaecilius in disbelief.
Especially Mordo.
He wavered.
Their silence made Kaecilius laugh again. He spread his arms and shouted with abandon.
"Look at yourselves. Back then, I was just like you are now."
"She preached again and again that darkness was evil, that it was destruction. Yet she fell into darkness herself and pursued it as well. She is a liar."
"And I have witnessed what true greatness is. Dormammu, Lord of Darkness, the great ruler. He is eternity."
"Join us. Join the darkness. Let us tear away that woman's disguise together."
Kaecilius looked at the two of them with complete sincerity.
But the only answer he received was their eyes and expressions growing firm once more.
"Okay, hopeless fools. Then take that so-called admiration and loyalty of yours and die with it." Kaecilius sighed.
Then he raised his hand and stared at Wong mockingly. "Stop thinking about that magical beacon you sent out. From the moment you stepped into this city, you were completely isolated."
After saying that, he waved his hand.
In an instant, the battle began.
...
Inside the office, the beautiful and seductive Needy wore an off-shoulder T-shirt, shorts, and slippers, looking completely at home.
She leaned against the soft sofa, one leg crossed over the other, lazily flipping through a tablet. On the screen were portraits, resumes, and final evaluations.
These were future members of the Grey Knights.
As their Commander, she had to personally review each one.
Her boss had already screened them once and handed the final review authority to Needy. That made Needy feel that she carried a heavy responsibility.
She had to take it seriously.
Though the lazy way she looked right now did not seem very serious.
As she flipped through the files and evaluated them in her heart, Jennifer's chattering voice kept ringing in her mind.
"Trust me, this handsome guy has to be selected. Look at him. A standard American white muscle hunk. Leader above, he's actually 193 centimeters tall. With that height, he could play in the NBA."
"This one works too. She's really beautiful. She's from Ethiopia? Where is that?"
"Uh, this one's not great. A little too dark. Oh my God, I'm not racist, but you know, dear, I prefer them a little lighter."
"Look at this one. Six years in the military, thirty-two classified missions completed perfectly. Too bad he retired because a bullet went through his bone and left him disabled. But he's a hero. We can heal him. Magic can do anything. Praise the Leader. Praise magic."
Listening to Jennifer judge them like a beauty pageant, Needy could not help rolling her eyes. "Please. We're screening members for the Grey Knights. They're the best group in the evaluation."
"And you're discriminating based on skin color, Jennifer. That isn't allowed here."
"Also, why aren't you studying magic anymore?"
