Chapter 158. A Scream of Pure, Unadulterated Terror (Over Absolutely Nothing)
They walked the rest of the way in a comfortable, contented quiet. The city had fallen into a deep slumber, the only sounds being the occasional distant bark of a dog and the soft, rhythmic scrape of their footsteps against the stone.
The tension of the earlier fight had been replaced by something far more potent: a fragile, unspoken intimacy that seemed to hum between them like a plucked lute string.
The conversation drifted easily between small, unimportant things: the quality of the ale at the tavern, the odd way the moonlight hit the fountain in the plaza, the ridiculousness of Kaela’s combat style.
But as they approached the quieter residential district where the houses grew larger and the hedges more manicured, Catherine’s tone shifted. The casual levity evaporated, replaced by a rare, unguarded honesty she had been practicing with increasing courage over the past several weeks.
"You know," she said suddenly.
Her grip on his hand tightened slightly, not in distress, but in emphasis. "I want you to know something..."
"And I want you to hear it as exactly what it is: not as jealousy masquerading as concern, and certainly not as obligation dressed up as generosity."
William felt a strange flutter in his stomach, a premonition that the conversation was about to veer into uncharted territory.
"Alright," he said, his voice steady despite the sudden spike in his pulse. "I’m listening."
Catherine took a breath, the cool night air visible as a faint mist in front of her lips. "I’ve spent a long time watching you, William."
"Watching how you move through the world, how you interact with the girls, and especially... how you manage the weight of their lives along with your own." She turned her head to meet his gaze, her eyes luminous in the darkness. "If... someday... you found yourself caring for someone else the way you care for me, whether it’s Olivia, or one of the other girls, or someone we haven’t even met yet, I wouldn’t resent that."
William stopped walking. He stared at her, genuinely stunned.
’W-what...?’
’Oh yeah... I forgot... the Harem Training System...’
He expected a confession of love, a declaration of possessiveness, or perhaps a heated argument about his unconventional methods. He did not expect this radical, terrifyingly selfless acceptance.
"I understand what your system actually is now, William," she continued, her voice growing stronger, more certain. "I see it now..."
"It’s not about control or manipulation... It’s built around genuine care, a deep-seated need to nurture and protect."
"You don’t take from people; you give yourself to them." She squeezed his hand gently, her touch warm and grounding. "I trust you enough to know you would never treat those bonds lightly."
"So, I want you to know that the door isn’t closed... If your heart finds its way elsewhere, if that’s where things naturally lead, I want you to feel free to follow it."
"I’d rather you know that plainly now than have you carry the burden of unspoken guilt or worry about my reaction in silence."
William nearly missed a step entirely. His mind raced, trying to process the implications of what she had just said. It was a gift, a gift of freedom that felt more intimate than any physical embrace.
She was offering him absolution before he had even committed a transgression.
"That’s..." William started, then stopped, rubbing the back of his neck as he struggled to find words that didn’t sound inadequate. "I... I wasn’t expecting you to bring that up quite so casually, Catherine."
"That’s a monumental thing to say."
Catherine let out a soft laugh, the sound bright and genuine, cutting through his stunned silence. "Would you have preferred I made it dramatic? A candlelit monologue with weeping violins?"
"No, I just—" William shook his head, a self-deprecating smile forming as he tried to regain his composure. "I need a second to catch up..."
"My brain is still trying to process the bandit attack, and now you’ve gone and dropped a philosophical bombshell on me."
"Consider it an unexpected challenge," she teased, stepping closer until he could smell the faint lavender of her perfume. "Something to test your reflexes."
She guided him forward again, their fingers still interlaced, as they finally reached the wrought iron gate of her home. The house stood silent and imposing, a sanctuary waiting to receive them.
Catherine turned to him one last time before reaching for her keys, her expression softening into something tender and playful. "Take all the time you need to process it, William."
"We have plenty of time for philosophy tomorrow." Her eyes sparkled with mischief. "Tonight, though, I’d rather you focus on something else entirely."
...
The wrought iron gate creaked open with a familiar whisper as Catherine led William into the courtyard. The house was a sanctuary of polished wood and soft lamplight, a stark contrast to the blood soaked cobblestones they had traversed hours earlier.
Inside, the air was warm, carrying the comforting scent of beeswax and old books.
"Make yourself comfortable, William," Catherine said, her voice dropping to a husky register as she guided him toward the plush velvet sofa in the parlor. "I’ll prepare some tea or perhaps something stronger."
"You look like you’ve been through hell."
William sank into the cushions, the leather creaking beneath him. As Catherine moved toward the kitchen, he watched her, the way she carried herself with both authority and a new, tender vulnerability.
"You don’t have to fuss over me, Catherine. Just your company is enough."
"Nonsense," she called back over her shoulder, a playful lilt in her voice. "After tonight, you deserve to be spoiled."
As she disappeared into the kitchen, William leaned his head back and closed his eyes. His mind began to wander, drifting back through the haze of exhaustion.
"But I think I need to change first." Catherine smiled and then walked upstairs.
"Yeah, sure..." William nodded then his mind starts playing tricks.
A strange, vivid memory flickered behind his eyelids a dream, or perhaps something more. In this half sleep state, he remembered lying in this very room, the morning sunlight streaming through the curtains.
He remembered the sensation of heat, the intimate weight of someone pressing against him, and the unmistakable, maddeningly pleasurable feeling of Catherine her hair cascading over his thighs devoting herself entirely to him, her mouth warm and skilled as she took him deep into her throat.
His breath hitched in his sleep, his body reacting to the phantom sensation before he fully woke.
"William! William, help me!"
The scream shattered the memory like glass. It wasn’t a scream of pain, but one of pure, unadulterated terror.
William bolted upright, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Catherine? What happened?! Are you hurt?!"
He scrambled off the sofa, adrenaline flooding his system. The memory of the ’dream’ was still burning hot in his mind, making his pulse race for entirely different reasons.
He sprinted toward the hallway leading to the bedrooms. "Catherine!"
He reached her bedroom door and flung it open with enough force to rattle the hinges. "Catherine, where--"
He stopped dead. The room was bathed in shadows.
The moonlight filtered through the lace curtains, casting skeletal patterns across the empty bed and the polished floorboards. The room was silent, cold, and even empty.
"Catherine? This isn’t funny." His voice wavered. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead.
Had she been taken? Had something been lurking in the dark? His mind raced through worst case scenarios assassins, magical threats, worse.
Suddenly, two soft but firm hands flew up, clamping over his eyes from behind, plunging his world into darkness.
"Gotcha!" Catherine’s voice giggled directly into his ear, breath warm against his neck.
William froze, his entire body tensed for combat. "Catherine? What the hell are you doing?"
He reached up, his fingers wrapping around her wrists, gently but firmly prying her hands away from his face. He spun around, ready to demand an explanation, but the words died in his throat.
His jaw nearly hit the floor.
The woman standing before him wasn’t the composed, dignified noblewoman who had walked him home. Catherine was wearing a set of exquisite, mature white lace lingerie that left almost nothing to the imagination.
The delicate fabric hugged her curves like a second skin, the stark white stark against her flushed skin. The plunging neckline teased the swell of her breasts, and the sheer material of the panties left him breathless.
Behind her, she had deliberately kicked the bedroom door shut with a soft click, sealing them both inside the dim room.
Catherine stood there, her cheeks burning a deep crimson, her fingers twisting nervously at the hem of the lace. Her usual confidence had evaporated, replaced by a shy, trembling eagerness that made her look more beautiful than he had ever seen her.
"Hehehe..." she whispered, her voice barely audible, her eyes darting to the floor before meeting his with a hopeful, vulnerable spark. "Surprise~!"
"I hope you... like it... William..."
