Chapter 122: The Siege of Katula
Eiren’s pov
Eiren’s heart beat wildly against his ribs, refusing to slow. His chest felt tight, and every breath came out shallow. Even with Kaevian standing only inches away, his dark presence filling the chamber, Eiren could not stop thinking about what he had done.
He had betrayed the Prince of Lust.
He had handed Azriel over to their enemies, weak and unconscious.
The guilt weighed heavily on him. And he hated how it was making him feel.
Kaevian turned his dark eyes toward him, noticing the tremble in Eiren’s hands. "What are you overthinking now?" he asked calmly. "You made the only logical choice. The prince chose that fragile human, not you so you were right to fight for your position. Do not look down on yourself for that.’’
The words struck Eiren like cold water, pushing his guilt back.
Kaevian was right.
If Azriel had chosen him, if the prince had shown him even a little warmth instead of wrapping his fingers around Eiren’s throat and choking him with cold disdain, perhaps Eiren would have hesitated.
Maybe he would have spared Azriel or at least found another way to deal with him. He wouldn’t have been so quick to struck him down.
But Azriel had made his choice.
After years of Eiren’s loyalty, he had thrown him aside for Seraphel.
Eiren had been left with no other choice.
No matter what happened, no matter how much blood stained his hands, Azriel had to become his.
A sudden explosion shattered the silence outside.
The force shook the stone floor and rattled the heavy double doors.
Eiren’s head snapped up, his eyes meeting Kaevian’s steady gaze.
"Is it starting?" Eiren asked, stepping toward the doorway.
"There is only one way to find out."
Kaevian raised a hand. Dark magic tore through the air, forming a swirling purple portal. ’’follow me,’’ he instructed.
Without hesitation, he stepped through.
Eiren swallowed his fear and followed.
The portal dropped them high above the palace grounds, onto the stone spires of the highest pavilion roof.
Below them, the siege of Katula had begun.
Massive fireballs rained from the blackened sky, smashing through golden spires and grand archways, reducing ancient buildings to rubble.
Waves of heat rose toward them.
Eiren covered his mouth as ash filled the air and burned his lungs. Everywhere he looked, Katula was on fire.
Kaevian immediately raised both hands, forming a barrier of dark shadows around them. The shield flickered as embers and magic struck it, keeping the worst of the heat away.
Eiren stared at the destruction below in horror. He had not imagined that it would be this destructive because he had believed that that elysium would come for only Seraphel.
"Will this really be the end of Katula?"
Kaevian shook his head. His gaze remained fixed on the burning kingdom.
"The Sins are not fragile mortals. They built secondary domains beneath their territories in case their kingdoms ever fell. If Katula collapses, the Tower of Prosperity will activate and transport the people into a safe domain."
"Even with His Highness sealed away?" Eiren asked.
He knew how the magic worked, but he needed to hear the answer.
A small part of him wanted to believe the innocent citizens would not all be slaughtered because of his plan. As much as he wanted to become Azriel’s consort, it would be useless to rule without the people.
it was also not because he cared about them.
He simply did not want their deaths weighing on his conscience when he finally had Azriel and could return to the life of luxury he wanted.
"The Tower of Prosperity activates automatically," Kaevian explained. "Once the kingdom’s structure drops below a certain point, it requires no command from the prince as it will operate on its own.’’
Eiren nervously bit the skin around his fingernails.
"Then Seraphel could be transported to safety if Elysium fails to capture him before the tower activates? he would be freed from whatever is happening?’’
Kaevian nodded. "The evacuation does not distinguish between royal consorts and commoners."
"Then all of our plans will be useless!" Eiren shouted. ’’if Seraphel is alive then what is the use of this plan? he is not supposed to live!’’
He pressed his palms against his forehead and dragged them down his face.
Smoke filled the sky as flames consumed the streets. Zephyrus had unleashed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of demonic beasts into Katula. They tore through the defenses, slaughtering guards and destroying everything in their path.
"If the attack destroys the kingdom too quickly, the tower will activate," Eiren said desperately. "We will have done all of this for nothing!"
"Which is why we must suppress the Prosperity array," Kaevian said, his voice turning cold. "We only need to hold it back for a short time. Long enough for the siege to end and Seraphel to be removed from our lives."
A small spark of hope appeared in Eiren’s eyes before disappearing.
"The Tower of Prosperity feeds on spiritual essence. Its core drains the life force of anyone who approaches without the Sin’s authorization."
Kaevian gave a low chuckle.
"Which is why we need a sacrifice."
Eiren’s heart began pounding again.
"What the hell are you talking about?" he demanded. "Who are you planning to sacrifice?"
He knew Kaevian too well. He was ruthless and would destroy anyone if it helped him reach his goal.
"I believe Lioren will make a perfect sacrifice for the Tower of Prosperity."
Eiren’s eyes widened.
It was exactly what he had feared.
Kaevian was slowly removing every rival concubine from the board. Sylven had already been ruined during the curse incident, and now Lioren was next.
What would stop Kaevian from doing the same to him?
The moment Eiren became useless, he could be next.
Still, he forced his fear down.
Right now, Lioren was the perfect sacrifice.
As long as his life essence could keep the tower from activating, Eiren did not care what happened to him.
All that mattered was Seraphel.
Once Seraphel was gone, Azriel would be his.
