Chapter 226 - 218: To the New World
With Luh Yao’s permission, Huangjue and his five brothers finally passed through the Black Water Mite’s death blockade and traveled south, arriving on the cold Northern New Continent.
They trembled in fear among the Ice Giant Monsters, witnessed massive swarms of Earth Dragon-like worms churning through the ice, and were even more terrified by the magnificence and grandeur of the Dragon Nest.
In the old world, the Bully Locusts were invincible; only locusts could defeat other locusts.
But in the New Continent, illuminated by a God, they were nothing more than insignificant insects. Any single Extraordinary Creature could easily crush them.
The entire time, the six locust brothers kept their wings tucked in tightly, acting meek and submissive. They would hide off to the side whenever someone passed by, terrified of causing any trouble.
The humans here weren’t afraid of them in the slightest; in fact, they pointed at them with great interest.
Luh Yao saw.
A merchant asked the locust brothers.
"Friends, are you in need of a well-paying job?"
"You see, you look much stronger than other... er, members of your species. I’ve never seen Extraordinary Creatures like you in Yao City or Yan City."
"All you need to do is walk around a bit and put on a simple show. Do you know what theater is? It’s performing stories and tricks on a stage. I’m the leader of the Wild Theater Troupe, Shang Bei."
"Things like jumping through a hoop of fire, dancing while flying upside down, playing the part of a bully harming an innocent maiden... Please don’t mind any of that. They’re just on-stage roles. Don’t bring your characters into your personal life. We’re just trying to make money, right?"
"This is the next big thing, my friends. My troupe members have all bought houses in Saniluo. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
’Well, I’ll be,’ Luh Yao thought.
’They’re even putting on acrobatic troupe roadshows now.’
This merchant was indeed in the business. He led a traveling performance troupe of Extraordinary Creatures that included Fish People, a Cannibal Crab, and a Blazing Chicken. You could call them a professional team.
The other Bully Locusts couldn’t understand him, so Huangjue had to try and communicate through gestures.
The merchant simply took out some High Furnace Honey Wine. After everyone had a little drink, communication flowed much more smoothly.
The locust brothers went aside to discuss the offer.
They had no special skills—they couldn’t farm or build. At best, they were amateur diggers, but in the face of the massive Split Worms, that meager talent was meaningless.
But when it came to being bullies, they were professionals.
Two of the Bully Locusts chose to join the troupe, becoming its newest members and heading south, performing all along the way.
Huangjue could only continue the journey with the other three brothers.
They grew hungry and tired. Eventually, after Huangjue negotiated for them, the four brothers started working at a tavern—their main job was taking out the trash.
In fact, the other three brothers loved this job.
The trash contained plenty of leftover food from customers, discarded ingredients from the kitchen, and even some rotting scraps. The Bully Locusts could eat it all. Compared to the dry grass roots of the old world, this was a supreme delicacy.
One time, while drinking High Furnace Honey Wine, two of the brothers drunkenly slurred, "This job is great. I could do this for the rest of my life."
The tavern owner just laughed heartily and said, "Friends, that’s not a very good ambition to have. When you have time, you should go see the Twin Cities, visit the Divine Hall in Yao City to pay your respects, and then go experience the good life in Yan City."
That second spring, Huangjue left the Northern New Continent with his three brothers. He had learned the Yao Language, allowing for basic communication with humans, and had also gained a general understanding of this new world.
To save money, they chose to fly across the vast ocean, resting on small islands when they grew tired and munching on leaves and wild fruits when they got hungry.
They encountered danger several times during the journey. They were attacked by Cannibal Crabs and hunted by Mad Flame Birds... In the end, they had no choice but to travel by boat.
After arriving in Yao City, Huangjue went to the Divine Hall. His status as a Prophet was immediately sensed by Yaoshao. Yaoshao, now an old woman, received him, and the two had a cordial and friendly conversation—a meeting between her and the Prophet of an Alien Race.
"If you are willing, please stay here at the Divine Hall. I am very old now, and this place needs a Prophet to serve the God and to further convey the God’s will to everyone."
Huangjue was silent for a moment.
"Thank you for your kind offer, but I don’t think I have the ability or the qualifications..."
"I’m ashamed to say, I came to the New Continent hoping to find a way to save my people. Right now, I can’t even accomplish that, let alone anything else."
"Oh? Please, tell me about it."
And so, the locust Prophet told her about the old world, the current state of the Bully Locusts, and their fate of being controlled by Gluttony.
"I see."
Yaoshao asked slowly, "So, what are your thoughts on the matter?"
"My original plan was to bring my people to the New Continent, learn the superior farming techniques here, get seeds, and then go back to cultivate farmland so that we could have a continuous food supply."
"But thinking about it now, that’s probably impossible."
Huangjue said calmly, "On my journey, I’ve discovered that when the Bully Locusts have full stomachs, they like to relax. Their Endurance is high; they can withstand extreme cold and heat, and they can eat poisonous and rotten things without issue. But when they are hungry, they become reckless."
"That makes it difficult for them to endure the long cultivation period. I suppose it’s simply a Trait of our species."
"While working at the tavern up north, I met Mr. Shang Bei, the leader of the Wild Theater Troupe. He invited two of my kinsmen to join, saying he wanted to capitalize on their unique features, and they immediately agreed."
Huangjue paused. "I believe my people are not skilled in farming or husbandry, but we have our strengths. Namely, endurance, and not being picky eaters."
"As long as their bellies are full, the Bully Locusts aren’t actually terrifying, nor are they insects driven to Madness."
Yaoshao’s wrinkled face broke into a smile. "You’ve thought this through very clearly. Every race, and even every individual, has things they are good at and things they are not."
"I do have a proposal. Perhaps the Bully Locust race could cooperate with the Divine Hall Council as a starting point."
"The Divine Hall Council is constantly researching Magic Potions. We have already developed the beginner-level Anesthetic Juice and the intermediate-level Sleeping Potion, and we are currently working on developing new types."
"Your race possesses excellent endurance. How about you serve as our Medication Testers and Special Researchers? We will provide vast amounts of food to satisfy your appetites. However, Medication Testers must endure some pain, and some of the effects are uncontrollable. You could be Poisoned, become dizzy, or even die."
An exclamation mark appeared over Huangjue’s head. "My people don’t fear death, only hunger! Is this really possible?"
"It is a proposal. Whether it is a suitable arrangement can only be determined through further cooperation."
Yaoshao remained cautious with her words. "However, I don’t think there’s anything to lose. It’s worth a try."
"We are willing to try!"
Huangjue led by example, becoming the very first Medication Tester himself.
This approach was quickly proven to be viable.
With strong support from both Huangjue and Yaoshao, willing Bully Locusts gradually made their way to Yao City, forming the Divine Hall Council’s team of Medication Testers.
Their daily work consisted of eating all sorts of potions and pills.
The Scholars of the Divine Hall Council recorded their reactions from the sidelines and made subsequent adjustments to the Magic Potions.
The Bully Locusts were indeed tough as nails. One moment they would be convulsing, and the next they would be full of vigor. Some would even go stiff as a board, only to come back to life a short while later... A few even became addicted to the Magic Potions.
After becoming Medication Testers, the Bully Locusts were also studied further by the Divine Hall Council. Their innate poison resistance and Endurance became a new direction of research for the council.
...
Just then, the simulator displayed a notification.
[The Divine Hall Council has invented the Magic Potion: Life-Saving Pill.]
[The appearance of the Life-Saving Pill has slightly reduced the death rate in Yao City.]
[Due to the influence of the Bully Locusts, the efficiency of Magic Potion research in Yao City has greatly increased.]
Luh Yao clicked on the Magic Potion entry.
...
[Life-Saving Pill]: A Magic Potion invented by the Divine Hall Council, formulated with an extract from Bully Locusts. It enhances one’s ability to resist being Poisoned and infected.
...
Luh Yao felt a sense of relief.
The Bully Locusts’ transformation upon entering the New Continent had indirectly given rise to a Magic Potion version of antibiotics.
They had found their own niche for survival.
