Chapter 205 - 200: Loyalty! Loyalty! And Goddamn Loyalty
As the captain of the 15th Squad of the First Scout Corps of the Fifth Fearless Empire, Boutu maintained a record of never failing a mission.
The 15th Squad, including their captain, had a total of fourteen members, all elites of the Scout Corps.
They might not have been the most skilled combatants, but they were masters of stealth and disguise.
Scouts are the army’s source of intelligence.
Therefore, most of the people in the Scout Corps were not originally professional soldiers. They were recruited artisans, physicians, farmers, thieves, mercenaries, and even some destitute scholars and clergy.
Once they took off their uniforms, they became the most ordinary of civilians.
Boutu had great confidence in the 15th Squad. He had handpicked every member; they were reliable, skilled, and had no issues executing missions.
Upon receiving this critical assignment, Boutu was more excited than anything else.
The Bos God was crusading against the Evil God, King Wuzi, and the Empire had also declared war on the Wuzi Kingdom.
The 15th Squad’s orders were to infiltrate the rear of the kingdom controlled by the Evil God, blend in with the locals, and gather intelligence.
After receiving further orders from the rear, they were to sabotage local roads, water sources, and supplies. If the opportunity arose, they were to build an altar in a hidden location to contend for the Fire of Faith for the Bos God.
Boutu led the squad forward with light packs, following a circuitous route according to the map provided by the corps. However, the further they went, the more he felt something was wrong. ’According to the map, there should be a range of hills ahead, so why has it turned into a desert?’
The sky darkened for no reason, and the sand turned a grayish-brown, as if its color had been drained by some mysterious power.
Boutu decided to take cover on the spot, ordering everyone to hide in the sand and observe the situation.
Scouts often operated in dangerous areas; they had to remain vigilant and adaptable.
Not long after, Boutu heard screams from the distance.
The Imperial Army was engaged in a fierce battle with the enemy.
Boutu ordered them to press on. The main force was engaging the enemy’s primary units, creating an opportunity for them to slip through and infiltrate the rear.
But as the squad advanced deeper into the desert, the map from the corps became completely useless; it didn’t match the terrain at all.
The scout squad was exhausted and hungry, every one of them on edge. A single encounter with enemy forces could mean annihilation.
Boutu could only rely on his wilderness experience to lead his men in search of a path to survival.
Misfortune never comes alone; as fate would have it, they ran into the Wuzi People.
He led his squad in a constant evasion, eventually entering a massive black area at the end of a dead-end path.
Boutu had originally planned to wait for the enemy to leave before emerging. But as soon as they entered, they found themselves in another world.
This world was incredibly bright.
The sun hung high in the sky. The ground beneath their feet was firm and solid. There was no smoke, fire, or explosions, no hidden ground traps that could collapse at any moment, and no crows or vultures feasting on corpses.
The air carried the faint scent of fresh grass and a slightly salty sea breeze.
Boutu led his team to catch fish and hunt birds on the small island, filling their stomachs. He then ordered them to take turns on watch so everyone could get some sleep.
Then, he began to consider their next move.
’That cave from before was like some kind of massive teleportation gate, which had sent the squad all the way to this unfamiliar region. This means this is very likely the deep rear of the Wuzi Kingdom.’
’An opportunity has come!’
Boutu rallied the scouts, "Brothers, now is the time to achieve great things!"
"From this day forward, we will disperse and lie in wait for the Empire, investigating the current state of this country and awaiting the Empire’s call. When that time comes, all our efforts will be rewarded by His Majesty the Emperor! You’ll be ennobled, with titles for your wives and children, and granted land!"
"Remember, from this day on, you are no longer Imperial Scouts. You are artisans, scholars, farmers, fishermen, and merchants. You will gather intelligence from every walk of life and wait for the signal of the Empire’s final assault."
"Every year, on this day, we will rendezvous on this island to consolidate our intelligence. For security, only I will know your assigned cities and identities. Private contact is forbidden."
"For the Empire!"
"15th Squad, disband!"
...
「One year later」
Boutu arrived back on the island he had sailed from, traveling by galley.
He had mastered the local basic language and script, could speak the Yao Race’s language fluently, and had even learned some dialects from the Southern Islands to better communicate with the islanders.
Now, dressed in a thick cotton coat and carrying a pack, he started a fire in a clearing.
The rising flames cast a red glow on Boutu’s furrowed brow.
He was both happy and worried.
He was happy because this place wasn’t the Wuzi Kingdom after all, but an entirely new world.
This world was rich in resources and well-ordered. There was no war or chaos, and it possessed many wondrous goods and tools. The number of Extraordinary Creatures was vast, and they actually interacted closely with humans... Its value was far greater than that of the Wuzi Kingdom.
But his worry also stemmed from this.
In this world, there were at least four Apostles, each of them incredibly powerful. They had shot down the sun, tamed the Dragon King, and even slain numerous Old Gods... Their top-tier combat power was utterly terrifying.
The Empire also had Apostles of Gods, but none had ever achieved such terrifying feats, not even the ability to stifle natural disasters.
Not to mention, the god who presided over this world—the Yao God—was even more unfathomable.
Boutu sighed.
’I thought we’d stumbled into a flock of sheep, but who knew we’d actually walked into a tiger’s den.’
Currently, Boutu was serving in the City Guard Army of Yan City.
As far as he knew, the military strength of Yan City alone included several hundred Corrupters led by Commander Salt Geller, as well as dozens of Corrupted Guards, all of them elite combatants.
In this world, they relied almost entirely on elite combat power, not numerical superiority.
For the Empire to counter the Extraordinary Power of this one city, it would need to dispatch at least eight full-strength corps.
On the other hand, the mundane side of the City Guard Army was not to be underestimated either.
They were equipped with armor and bows, their arrowheads coated with the magic potions Anesthetic Juice and Sleeping Potion. With these potions, they were already capable of subduing or even annihilating Extraordinary Beings.
Furthermore, there were ten Martial Cultivators within the City Guard Army. They all used combat as their primary method of cultivation, had broken through human limits, and were formidable figures who had entered the Extraordinary Realm.
The more Boutu thought about it, the more he sighed.
If the Imperial Army were to launch an all-out attack here, their chances of success would be slim.
Just then, a merchant wearing a felt hat walked over and spoke in a low voice in the Imperial tongue.
"For the Empire."
"For the Empire."
Boutu responded, "Sit. Tell me about your situation."
The merchant was named Bo Jiuqian. He sat down next to his captain, pulling his coat tighter. "Captain, I’ve been running shipping routes with a few other merchants. The main route is from the Northern New Continent to Southern Saniluo, and we trade Split Worms and Black Water Mites."
"The Dragon Nest over there is basically a large city now. Many people have settled around it, living off the livestock and trade from the nest."
He licked his lips. "I’ve seen a Dragon once."
"It was flying through the air, breathing black Dragon Flame, its wings blotting out the sun. You can only understand the power of a Dragon when you see it with your own eyes... It’s a walking natural disaster."
"And the Ice Giant Monsters nearby are like walking mountains. Swords and spears can’t even break their icy shells. Perhaps only the Empire’s most powerful Siege Crossbows could harm them."
Boutu frowned. "Is that all you’ve investigated?"
"There’s more."
Bo Jiuqian collected his thoughts. "I infiltrated the merchants’ circle and got an important piece of intelligence from them."
He paused. "The fallen Dark Sun is very likely inside the Dragon Nest, kept in the Dragon King’s collection."
"..."
Boutu felt his anxiety growing.
’The Dragon Nest’s strength seems even greater than I imagined.’
「After a while」
The members of the scout squad arrived one after another.
They each reported the intelligence they had gathered.
Boutu consolidated everyone’s findings and came to a conclusion.
This was a world with extremely advanced agriculture, handicrafts, commerce, culture, refining, forging, and medical arts. The mundane and the extraordinary were actively merging, giving rise to an endless stream of inventions and creations...
The good news was that the Yao Race population wasn’t very large.
The bad news was that the number of Extraordinary Creatures was growing rapidly, and some of them were integrating into the Yao Race.
Boutu spoke up. "Everyone share your thoughts. Let’s see what we can do for the Empire."
They chatted cheerfully while discussing their individual professions and experiences, but when the conversation turned to their mission, everyone’s face fell.
Only the campfire crackled and popped.
Boutu said fiercely, "Snap out of it! Have you forgotten our mission?!"
"As soldiers of the Imperial Army, we have only one duty."
"Loyalty, loyalty, and more goddamn loyalty!"
"For the Empire!"
The others echoed him, "For the Empire."
Suddenly, a grimy young man walked past. He was thin and scrawny, carrying a bundle on his back. He asked curiously, "What are you all doing?"
A wave of tension went through the group.
Fortunately, the locals couldn’t understand the Imperial tongue.
One of the squad members whispered, "Boss, should we silence him?"
Boutu stopped him with a look, then walked over with a smile and said, "We’re all from the same island, just having a get-together."
"Oh, well, be careful. A gang of Cannibal Crab pirates has been active around here recently. Those guys have already robbed several ships. I just came here to deal with them, and I’ve caught one."
The young man dragged a dead Cannibal Crab out from behind a tree and suggested, "How about we eat it together?"
...
As he ate the delicious roasted crab meat, Boutu felt a surge of relief. ’Good thing I played it safe.’
The other party was a Martial Cultivator. If they had attacked, his squad would have likely been wiped out right here.
He began to worry about the future.
’I wonder if the Empire will come.’
On one hand, Boutu hoped the Imperial Army would arrive soon to relieve them and bring them back to the homeland they had long been away from.
On the other hand, he didn’t want the main force of the Empire to come here, because it was very likely a one-way trip.
His conflicting emotions made him tear viciously into the meat, channeling his worries into his appetite as he repeated a phrase in his mind.
’Loyalty, loyalty!’
