Chapter 99 - 94: Preparing to Hunt
Luh Yao used his last Apostle Mark to convert Philos.
He could only trust Philos because he was bound by this official Divine Hall procedure.
A notification appeared on the screen.
—Converting him into an Apostle of your Divine Hall requires Power of Faith. Do you wish to spend 1000 Faith Value to convert this Apostle?
[Yes][No]
Luh Yao clicked yes.
—The lost Apostle has heard your call. Your Power of Faith has repaired his broken shell and withered soul. He is rapidly reviving from the Sea of Mourning.
—[Apostle]Philos will obey your will, carry out your Oracles, and fight for your Fire of Faith.
Philos gradually faded from transparent back into a physical form, his true body an ordinary-looking skeleton.
He dutifully knelt before Luh Yao, who was in front of the monitor.
Luh Yao asked him about the Haili God.
The Mourning Prayer was only an inquiry; it couldn’t guarantee comprehensive information. But by turning Philos into an Apostle, Luh Yao had brought him onto his ship, so he would naturally do his utmost.
In a confrontation between Gods, an information disparity was fatal. Luh Yao knew this from personal experience.
Text appeared above the Skeleton Man’s head: "Lord Yao God, the Haili God is one of the Gods. He belongs to the [Whistleblower] Divine Palace in the Divine Hall of the Gods and is one of the [Whistleblower]’s 19 Subordinate Gods, ranked 18th."
"The Haili God has two Apostles. The other one is much stronger than me."
"When we entered this Broken World, he suffered a stronger backlash from its rules and went completely mad. The Haili God had me dismantle him into bones and craft him into Skeleton Creatures."
Luh Yao obtained another useful piece of intelligence.
When an outside God underwent Demotion to cross into a new world, the stronger their Apostles, the greater the backlash they suffered.
Although the rules of the Fragment World had small loopholes, its rigid restrictions and layered barriers largely ensured that it was a safe zone for novices.
Very few Gods would be willing to pay the price of crippling themselves, practically resetting their accounts just to start over.
"The Haili God had 7 artifacts. But to resist your Divine Power, he threw 5 of them into the Fire of Faith to quickly replenish his Faith."
Luh Yao had an epiphany.
No wonder the Haili God had withstood the first wave of his blitz. It turned out he had emptied his coffers, converting everything into Power of Faith.
Luh Yao had done something similar once, using the Golden Dice to burn for 10 points of Faith.
This was a very inefficient move. The Divine Hall’s bonfire had no set prices; the amount of Faith it would burn for was completely opaque. A Divine Player wouldn’t resort to this unless they were at the end of their rope.
Having learned a painful lesson, Luh Yao decided he had to change his strategy.
’In the future, I need to upgrade and optimize my tactics. I’ll need to carry out precise, end-to-end strikes against the dark and malevolent Gods of the Broken World, striving to reduce wasted resources and consumption.’
’Simply put, I need to maximize the spoils of victory.’
This blitz against the Haili God had not been cheap for Luh Yao.
The first barrage of dense lightning clusters alone was a full 5,000 Faith.
Then, he had activated [Aegir’s Fire] to smash a meteor into his enemy’s face, which used up another charge.
And in the end, he had indirectly lost a total of 5 artifacts!
Luh Yao felt nothing but regret. A great deal of it.
But he quickly adjusted his mindset.
’What’s the most important quality for a worker?’
’Optimism.’
’A senior worker once put it well.’
’Being happy every day isn’t real happiness. Being unhappy one day and then happy the next—now *that’s* real happiness.’
Luh Yao turned his attention back to Philos.
Philos had deliberately boasted before, claiming to be the Haili God’s weakest Apostle. This, of course, was to make his own side seem more powerful and lure the Deep Sea Lord into joining them.
He was, after all, an individual with [Wisdom LV10].
Luh Yao then asked about the [Tao God].
"Lord Yao God, the Gods keep their distance from one another. Even those who belong to the same Divine Palace are wary of each other. The Haili God didn’t know much about the Tao God."
"..."
Philos thought for a moment. "I only know that the Tao God has two Apostles. The Haili God was wary of him, so he had me constantly trying to find ways to counter those two Apostles."
"The first Apostle is an Earth Elemental Creature. It has very high Defense, but its weaknesses are its slow movement and lack of offensive aggression."
"The second Apostle is a special life form that excels at hiding and stealth. Its characteristics are unknown."
The Skeleton Man’s knowledge was limited, but the intelligence he provided gave Luh Yao a basic concept of his enemy.
In his several real battles against other Divine Players, his confidence to strike directly at other Gods came from his overwhelming advantage in information.
Luh Yao could fight when he wanted and leave when he wanted.
Even if he faced a tough opponent he couldn’t defeat right away, he could still retreat. His enemies, however, couldn’t find his Divine Hall so quickly, leaving them unable to retaliate against his true self.
The battles erupted over the enemy’s Divine Statue and territory. The more the enemy fought, the more they lost, and the less chance they had of turning the tables.
Luh Yao gave Isabel an order: Notify the Garlic Tribe in Yao City and Yan City, and have the pixel people be on guard against heretical Gods. If any suspicious statues, buildings, creatures, or humans were found, they were to be reported immediately to an Apostle or to Prophet Hemira.
...
After making these arrangements, Luh Yao looked at his team of Apostles.
The Blood Knight was a high-level instructor and vanguard who created soldiers from corpses and salt.
The Skeleton Man was a craftsman who specialized in building with bone LEGOs.
The Snowman was a lunatic master thief.
’Isabel was the only normal one.’
Luh Yao sighed, looking up at the sky.
’This team is really hard to manage.’
He suddenly felt a bit of empathy for Boss Huang.
’It’s a big world, but there are always fewer people who can actually get things done than you’d think.’
Luh Yao took a sip of cola to calm down.
Suddenly, he found a blind spot in his thinking.
There seemed to be a special skeleton in the castle that he had yet to put to use.
The chief Apostle of the Forest God, Giant Forrest.
’Ever since I paused the Corrupter production project, Forrest’s mangled corpse has been lying in the castle. I’m short on manpower right now, so why not let Philos make use of it? See if he can assemble something.’
Luh Yao asked for Philos’s opinion.
An exclamation mark appeared above the Skeleton Man’s head. "The corpse of a High-Level Apostle? That’s prime material! Lord Yao God, I am grateful for your generosity and trust!"
"I will definitely not waste this high-grade material! I will create superior Skeleton Creatures to fight for your Faith!"
Luh Yao had the Deep Sea Lord carry Philos all the way to the Western Continent Castle.
As they entered the depths of the castle and saw the mountain-like corpse of the giant, a light bulb lit up above Philos’s head.
"It’s magnificent!"
"What a robust body! What crystal-clear, smooth bones! What a dazzling luster, what alluringly firm and captivating lines!"
An ecstatic smiley face appeared above the Skeleton Man’s head as he raised his arms high.
Philos looked toward the screen and asked in disbelief, "Lord Yao God, do all of this giant’s bones belong to me? Really?"
Luh Yao typed.
—Only the bones.
Philos scrambled onto the giant’s head, which had four curved horns, and began to dismantle the bones one by one with nimble movements.
He even hummed a little song as he worked.
A jumble of garbled characters appeared above the Skeleton Man’s head. Luh Yao guessed he was singing some kind of folk tune from his homeland.
While Forrest’s bones went to Philos, the remaining parts were given to Blood Knight Necied.
With manpower urgently needed, Luh Yao had the Blood Knight mix the giant’s rotten flesh with other corpses in stock to accelerate the creation of Corrupters.
Time passed, second by second.
Half an hour later, there was no trace of Giant Forrest left in the castle.
The Blood Knight had created 38 Corrupters in one go. This batch was of excellent quality; the lowest was LV15, and the highest even reached LV19. They were already a formidable, battle-ready force.
Under the Blood Knight’s training, the Corrupters engaged in close-quarters combat with each other, every punch landing with brutal impact. It reminded Luh Yao of the beefy gladiators from the Beast Fighting Arena. ’Muscular men brawling—who doesn’t love to see that?’
When he looked over at Philos, the smile on his face gradually vanished.
’After all that time, you used the bones of a High-Level Apostle to build me... a ball?’
