Chapter 170: The Hidden Spaceship
Hearing that Jack had found the spaceship’s location, he and Gwen decided to investigate that night. Kalen and Lisa insisted on tagging along too, wanting to help however they could.
"Are you sure the spaceship is kept out here?" Gwen asked, eyeing the endless stretch of desert, doubt clear in her voice.
"Yeah, I’m sure. Based on everything I dug up, this is the spot," Jack said, though even he sounded a little unsure as he steered the flying boat forward.
The boat skimmed over the cold desert, with nothing but sand and darkness stretching out in every direction.
Then, out of nowhere, Gwen’s spider-sense flared.
"Move!"
She grabbed the wheel and yanked it hard to the left, wrestling it out of Jack’s hands.
"Whoa!"
The sudden turn sent everyone lurching sideways.
BOOM!
The exact spot where the boat had been a second earlier erupted in an explosion, sending debris and sand flying into the air.
Enemy attack!
Jack immediately took control of the wheel again, swerving left and right as more attacks came at them.
But he couldn’t see where they were coming from.
"Where’s the attack coming from? Why can’t we see anything?" Lisa asked, panic creeping into her voice.
Jack didn’t answer. He was too focused on keeping the boat in the air.
"Something’s cloaked out there," Gwen said, quickly running every scan her suit had. "Radar, thermal, X-ray... nothing. Whatever this is, it’s more advanced than anything we’ve got."
Jack pushed the boat to full power, trying to break away from the attack.
It didn’t work.
Another blast tore through the air behind them.
Then another.
BOOM!
One finally clipped the side of the boat, ripping through the hull and sending the entire craft shaking violently.
Jack gritted his teeth as the damaged vehicle began to slow.
"Great. Just what we needed."
"No other choice," Jack said, activating the Omnitrix.
Katcha.
Green light flared around him, and a second later, the black-and-green form of Upgrade stood in his place.
Without wasting another second, Jack merged directly into the flying boat. His body spread across its surface, integrating with its systems and instantly boosting its performance.
The damaged boat accelerated.
Jack twisted the controls with far greater precision than before, weaving between the incoming attacks. When another projectile locked onto them, part of his body reshaped into a weapon and fired, destroying it mid-air.
Then Upgrade’s enhanced sensors picked up something that hadn’t been visible before.
Jack’s eyes widened.
"It’s a spaceship!"
He finally saw what had been attacking them.
It was the exact spaceship they’d come here to find.
"Guys, it’s the spaceship! They’ve been toying with us this whole time!"
Jack’s expression turned serious.
One direct hit from that thing could’ve ended us.
The attacks weren’t actually aimed at destroying them. Whoever was controlling the ship had been deliberately firing around them, keeping them under pressure without landing a killing blow.
"So what do we do?!" Kalen asked, fear creeping into his voice as he realized just how easily they could all die.
"I’ve got a plan. It’s a little crazy—borderline insane, honestly—but it’s the fastest thing I can think of," Jack said, his tone completely serious.
"What plan?" Lisa asked.
"I’m going to try possessing the spaceship. Same way I did with the boat."
Instead of retreating, Jack pushed the flying boat straight toward the massive ship.
"JACK! Can you even do that?!" Gwen asked, alarmed.
"I don’t know. I’ve never tried anything on this scale before." Jack grinned. "But I’ve got a good feeling about it."
The distance between them rapidly disappeared.
"Gwen, take the wheel!"
Jack separated himself from the boat and leaped toward the spaceship.
Gwen immediately grabbed the controls, keeping the damaged craft steady.
Jack’s Upgrade form reached the spaceship’s hull.
The moment he made contact, black-and-green circuitry began spreading across the massive surface.
"Whoa..." Kalen breathed, staring in amazement as Upgrade rapidly spread across the enormous ship.
Lisa watched the black-and-green mass consume more and more of the hull.
"Let’s hope he can get control of it fast," Lisa said, tension building as the attacks intensified now that they were directly above the ship.
Inside the spaceship’s control room...
"I don’t know which noble family these people belong to, sneaking into a restricted zone again after already being warned off," a Zehoberei officer muttered, watching the flying boat on his display.
"Doesn’t matter who they are. Destroy it," another officer ordered, his hands already moving over the weapons controls.
"Wait... are you seeing this?" a third crewman suddenly said, pointing at the screen. "Something black is spreading across the hull!"
Everyone turned toward the display.
Black-and-green circuitry was rapidly spreading across the ship’s surface.
"What in the world is that?!"
Before anyone could react, the ship’s systems began flickering one after another.
"I can’t control the weapons!"
"The engines aren’t responding!"
"What’s happening to the ship?!"
Then Jack’s face suddenly appeared on the main control screen.
"Sorry, everyone. From now on, this ship is under my control."
"Wh-what in the—what ARE you?!" a Zehoberei crewman stammered, backing toward the exit.
Before he could get away, a black tendril shot across the room and struck him.
Thud!
He collapsed.
The other crew members barely had time to react before Jack moved through the control room, knocking them out one after another.
With the ship under his control, Jack took over its onboard robots and sent them through the rest of the vessel. Researchers, soldiers, and other crew members were quickly subdued and placed inside the ship’s holding cells.
I don’t have much time left in this form. Better make sure nobody causes trouble before I change back.
Once everyone was secured, Jack finally felt the tension ease.
"The attacks stopped. Looks like Jack pulled it off," Gwen said as the barrage finally ceased.
Moments later, Jack contacted them and guided the flying boat into the captured spaceship.
"I can’t believe that actually worked. I thought we were about to die out there," Kalen said, still stunned.
"We were about to die, Kalen. Jack just happened to be strong enough to end it fast," Lisa replied.
They followed Jack’s directions through the ship until they reached the holding area.
Gwen looked around at the rows of cells. Inside were the unconscious Zehoberei scientists, researchers, and soldiers Jack had captured.
"You actually put all of them in here?" Gwen asked, looking at the secured prisoners.
"Yeah. I don’t have much time left as Upgrade, so I needed somewhere to keep them before I changed back," Jack’s voice came through the ship’s speakers.
Lisa looked around the ship, then toward Jack.
"You’re all going to leave the planet soon, aren’t you?"
There was a hint of sadness in her voice.
"Yeah. The ship’s in decent shape. It just needs a few repairs before we can take off," Jack replied through the comms.
"That’s really great news," Kalen said with a smile.
"Don’t worry," Gwen said, noticing his expression. "We’re not leaving until we’ve helped sort out your problem first."
Kalen looked at her, his expression softening.
"Thank you."
"Hey, Kalen."
Jack’s voice came through the comm, making him look up.
"Yeah?"
"Remember how you’ve been wondering why those soldiers suddenly started hunting you?"
Kalen’s expression became serious.
"You found something?"
"I did. Turns out this ship’s database might have the answer."
