Chapter 168: The Unexpected Rescue
"Childhood friend? So I guess she got dragged into whatever’s happening with Kalen," Jack said, thinking it over.
Kalen said something to Gwen over the video call.
Jack listened for a moment before translating, "He wants to go rescue her himself."
Gwen shook her head and tried to hold Kalen back.
"Don’t let him go," Jack said. "I’ll take care of it. Tell him I’ll get her out."
He headed straight toward the prison where Kalen’s childhood friend was being held. With a few hours left before the scheduled execution, Jack used his nanobots to scout the area from a distance. He soon located the cell where Kalen’s childhood friend was being held.
Mm. Heavily guarded. And from the way they’ve set everything up, it almost looks like they’re expecting Kalen to come and try something.
Rescuing her without a fight clearly wasn’t going to be an option.
Since he still had the supplies he’d bought earlier, Jack used his nanobots to put together a small flying delivery device. He had Redqueen send it back to Gwen with the supplies before getting to work on his rescue plan.
Which alien fits this best? Something that won’t cause a scene or tip anyone off that another alien is on this planet.
XLR8 came to mind first. His speed was perfect for a job like this.
After finding a hidden spot to let the Omnitrix recharge, Jack got ready.
"Showtime."
He transformed into XLR8 and immediately disappeared from sight.
With his nanobots scouting ahead and feeding him information about the guards’ positions, Jack moved through the prison grounds at incredible speed.
The first guard barely had time to turn his head.
Thud.
Jack struck him in the chest and sent him stumbling into a wall.
"One down."
He rushed toward the next guard before the first one had even hit the ground.
Thud! Thud!
Two more soldiers dropped almost at the same time.
Easy.
Jack continued moving through the area, knocking out guards who were standing alone or in small groups. To them, it probably looked like their comrades were simply collapsing out of nowhere.
Then one soldier finally noticed something was wrong.
"Hey! What’s happening?"
He looked around just in time to see another guard suddenly fly backward.
"What the—?!"
Jack zipped past him.
"Hi."
Thud.
The soldier dropped.
A second later, the alarm finally went off.
"Enemy attack! Enemy attack!"
"Find the enemy!"
Well, so much for keeping this quiet.
Soldiers scrambled through the area, weapons drawn. Some of the guards protecting the prison rushed toward the disturbance, leaving a gap in the defenses.
Jack noticed it immediately.
Thanks for opening the door for me.
Using the live feed from his scattered nanobots, he slipped through the opening before the soldiers could return.
A few guards inside spotted him.
"Over there!"
They raised their weapons.
Jack accelerated.
Before they could even fire, he was already behind them.
Thud! Thud!
The last two guards collapsed.
Jack looked toward the prison cell.
"That was easier than I expected."
He quickly reached the cell and stopped in front of the door.
Okay, now I just need to get her out without giving her a heart attack.
Jack transformed back from XLR8 into his Zehoberei form. He didn’t want to walk in looking like a strange alien and waste time explaining himself, so he chose the simpler option. With his Plumber suit still covering his body and his face uncovered, he walked toward the cell.
He reached the door and raised his hand.
"Let’s get you out of here."
BOOM!
The cell door blasted open.
The young Zehoberei woman inside jumped back in surprise.
"Who are you?!"
Jack raised his hands slightly.
"Relax. I’m Jack. Kalen sent me to get you out of here."
The moment she heard Kalen’s name, some of the tension left her face.
"Kalen? You know where Kalen is?" she asked urgently.
"I do. But we need to move before the soldiers figure out what happened."
Before he could say anything else, Redqueen’s voice came through his suit.
"Master, multiple soldiers are approaching your location."
"Speak of the devil," Jack muttered.
He grabbed Lisa’s hand and pulled her toward the exit.
"Come on!"
They barely made it out of the cell block before several soldiers appeared at the end of the corridor.
"There! Stop them!"
Jack sighed.
"Why does everyone on this planet love chasing me?"
He quickly moved forward, knocking the first soldier aside before he could raise his weapon. Another soldier charged at him, but Jack ducked under the attack and struck him in the stomach, sending him crashing into the wall.
"Keep moving!" Jack told Lisa.
Lisa followed close behind as they fought their way through the remaining guards. Once they reached the outside, Jack pulled her into a narrow alley and waited until the soldiers ran past.
After making sure they weren’t being followed, Jack finally looked at her.
"Forgot to ask earlier. What’s your name?"
"Lisa."
"Nice name." Jack nodded. "So, Lisa, do you know where we could find a fast vehicle? Something that can carry four people to the royal city?"
"A vehicle..." Lisa thought for a moment. "I don’t know about a fast one, but the general who came from the royal city—the one leading the hunt for Kalen—has some kind of flying vehicle. They’re extremely rare here. If you want speed, that’s probably your best option."
"A flying vehicle owned by a royal general?" Jack’s eyes lit up.
That’ll do.
"You know where it is?"
"What? No. How would I know that?" Lisa shook her head. "I only saw it once, when they dragged me out of my town after they found out I was Kalen’s friend. They wanted to use me to find him."
Anger flashed across her face as she remembered what had happened.
"Then I guess we’ll have to ask someone who does know."
Jack looked toward the street.
A lone soldier was passing nearby.
A few seconds later, Jack grabbed him and dragged him back into the alley.
"Hey! What are you—"
Lisa immediately pointed the gun she’d taken earlier at his head.
"Don’t kill me!" the soldier shouted, raising his hands.
"Relax. Just tell us where your general is and where he keeps his flying vehicle," Jack said.
"I-I’ll tell you! Just don’t shoot!"
The soldier quickly told them everything he knew.
After listening, Jack nodded.
"He doesn’t know where the general is right now, but at least we know where the vehicle is."
Jack struck the soldier on the back of the head, knocking him unconscious.
Lisa lowered the gun and looked at Jack.
"I noticed something earlier. You never killed any of the soldiers. You only knocked them out. I killed a few of them. Why the difference?"
Jack paused for a moment.
"That’s just where I draw the line."
He looked at the unconscious soldier.
"Once I start killing people, I don’t know where that line ends. Maybe that’s naive. Maybe I’m wrong. But I feel like if I cross it, sooner or later, I’ll end up with thousands of lives on my hands."
Jack shrugged.
"That’s just who I am."
He started walking away.
Lisa stared after him.
Who even is this guy...?
"Wait up!"
She quickly followed him.
They soon reached the location where the flying vehicle was being kept. A lone soldier was guarding it, but dealing with him didn’t take long.
Jack looked at the strange craft in front of them.
It looked more like a giant metal boat than a flying vehicle.
"You’re sure this is it?"
"Yeah, I’m sure," Lisa replied.
Jack climbed aboard and looked over the controls.
"Any idea how to operate it?"
Lisa shook her head.
"Not a clue."
Jack studied the controls for a few seconds. Surprisingly, they weren’t too different from the technology he was familiar with on Earth.
Looks like whoever built this wasn’t trying to make things complicated.
He adjusted a few controls.
Vrooom!
The boat-shaped craft suddenly lifted off the ground.
Lisa grabbed onto the side as the vehicle rose into the air.
"Whoa!"
Jack grinned.
"Not bad."
He steered the craft toward the edge of the city and increased the speed.
Several soldiers noticed the strange vehicle flying overhead, but none of them raised the alarm.
They assumed their own general was piloting it.
Jack and Lisa quickly cleared the city and disappeared into the distance.
What none of them noticed was the figure standing quietly on a nearby rooftop.
He watched the flying vehicle disappear into the distance with a calm, unreadable expression.
If Lisa had seen him, she would have been shocked.
He was the very general they’d been talking about—the man who had supposedly been leading the hunt for Kalen, yet whose current location none of the soldiers seemed to know.
The general watched the vehicle for a few more seconds before quietly speaking.
"That’s about as much help as I can give you."
