Vol 3. Ch 39. Ballroom decoration
The rest of that day flew by. We needed to start decorating well– today. The human side of house Gabri was going to come in today to help. It never hurt to have extra hands afterall.
The area we needed to decorate was the ballroom of house Gabri. It was pretty large with many arches, windows and doorways to other rooms. There were a few shelves dotted around but they were pretty empty. All glassware was stored somewhere else to be cleaned before the banquet. I think it was more to make sure no one broke anything.
There were no lights, candles swarmed the arches and pillars. This is going to take a while, isn't it?
Vision hindrance aside, the size of the place was enough to accommodate roughly three-hundred– that’s just me being strict with guessing there. You could argue it could comfortably fit more.
We only had Melinda's family, minus her parents. It would take days to a week to set this all up. As I felt dread and an overwhelming feeling from this… Our time was saved from multiple pairs of feet.
At least five men were there— one was extremely old looking, white hair and deep creases. The others looked rather attrac- young- one near mine and Allisa's age.
The old man had an air to him that wanted our attention. Melinda and James started to bow, Shaun, Verd and Sage bowed too after a moment.
“Little Mel, this is your… family?”
His voice was infinitely softer than Medea's. There was no gruffness, it was actually… soothing to the ears. It felt like it'd ease my worries. But his eyes… were something else.
They were sharp, it caused my spine to tingle too.
“Yes, this is my husband, James, and my daughters.”
“Welcome to the family. James, Allisa and Yukina…” His eyes landed on me and I felt scared. “That… is not an appropriate outfit for a woman in house Gabri.”
… I should've expected that.
I couldn't help but give him a deadpan look. I'm not going to wear a damn dress! What is with all these old people?!Ugh!
“Yukina! Give him some respect!”
I quickly lowered my head at Melinda's words. Why?! Just because he's one of the heads do I need to give him that much respect? Even with Medea we didn't need to give this much respect.
“Little Melinda, make due she wears proper clothing for the banquet.” The head ordered before turning around. “It's time to get this ballroom up in shape. Boys, get ready.”
“Yes, Sir.”
They all proclaimed in unison. It was like watching the marine corps at that point. They had matching outfits to signify that they’re on a mission or something.
I gave a small look around, they were all different heights and sizes. I could see some who look shorter than me, there’s some guy who’s at least six-feet and nine-inches tall. They all had decent builds though, they could definitely get everything here set-up in no time.
“Yukina, just get the tables set up.” James pointed at the round, rectangle and whatever shaped tables around us. “You aren't allowed to go up the ladders.”
Why? Tilting my head.
You really need to understand your body. Shen's voice resounded in my head.
I never really expected that she was listening in on me, never mind that, why was she talking about THAT. The last time I looked at her, she was wearing shorts short enough to show some kind of red marking on her thigh.
It's just a ladder.
Yes, but you also have a nice body, there are men in that room you don't know.
…
You're also wearing pants and a dress shirt… Either you are that oblivious to your body or you like the stares. Either way, James is right and you cannot really argue about it.
I shook my head. Right…Thanks.
I was led to a room with at least twenty boxes. Each was labeled with the words “table cloth.” Next to them were crates of plates, and glasses. So I was right! They just didn’t want them to break.
“Your mom, and sister are going to help move things.”
He's really serious. My spine was tingling with how serious James was acting. His voice hadn't changed a bit. I could never get used to him being serious at all. It always felt like a completely different person when he got serious.
“Will I get any help with them?” There are a lot of tables.
James shrugged and patted me on the head.
“You will, I just don't know who would. But I know you'll do great… So you got this!”
With his last words he gave me a thumbs up and finally flashed a smile. Did he notice I wasn’t used to his seriousness… nevermind I’ll get to it.
I started my job quickly after that, my chest was warm as I used my earth manipulation to make a sharp knife. I cut open the first box and pulled out a soft white cloth. It was folded into a small square, but I could feel the weight of it.
This is going to get tiring. I thought as I went back to the ballroom. The men already got enough ladders for themselves and their partners were the ladies. There was a big box with each pair, and the ladies would toss the streamers.
Trying to protect the women's dignity huh? I realized the more I scanned the area, all the men took the ladders. I shrugged before going towards the nearest table. The box showed a round table… So it goes on this.
In less than thirty seconds I unfolded this sheet. I flipped it onto the table and stretched it across it. When it was stretched out enough, I draped it on each side.
Gotta make sure it's right. Eventually I got it, then went to the next.
“Huh?” I let out when I felt something enormous behind me. “Who's there-?”
Behind me, a short, platinum haired elf stood behind me. Next to her was an even shorter, rounder man. His crimson hair matched with his beard. His muscles did not match what so ever with his massive belly. A dwarf? Aren’t they on bad terms with elves–.
“Lori’ We don’ need to bother her.” The dwarf next to her proclaimed.
Who are these two? I felt my heart jolt at how their presence felt. I could barely breathe.
The elf was draped in a black dress, her eyes were an emerald green… She smelled like soot, there were slight black marks at her finger tips. There— was a dark green tattoo that looked like a vine going up her leg. It went-
“Little wolf, what is your name?”
