Chapter 190: I feel every inch of you
The heavy oak door stood locked and solid, its iron latch sealing them away from the cold stone corridors beyond—from the low murmur of elven medics still tending the wounded, from the distant clatter of carts and the slow, weary hum of the capital stirring after weeks of war. Inside the private quarters the air was thick and close, warmed by the great stone hearth where a fire of seasoned oak and pine crackled and spat. Amber light danced across the walls in restless patterns, painting long shadows that swayed with every shift of the flames. The scent of woodsmoke mingled with the faint, clean sharpness of soap and the deeper, warmer musk of two bodies that had spent too long apart.
Vince stood near the washbasin, shirt hanging open to his waist. Firelight slid over the hard planes of his chest and the strange, flawless gold that now sheened the place where Marcus’s blade had nearly ended him. The skin there looked almost luminous, as if the wound had been sealed with liquid sunlight rather than flesh. Elena stepped up behind him, a steaming linen cloth folded in her hands. The heat of it rose in soft white curls that brushed her wrists. When her fingers first touched his shoulder—light, deliberate—he felt the contact like a current running straight down the length of his spine. She pressed the cloth to the nape of his neck and wiped away the last faint traces of dust and ash, her touch lingering far longer than the task required. The linen was almost too hot, the pressure of her palm firm and proprietary.
"You’re remarkably quiet," she murmured, voice low and teasing, the words warm against the shell of his ear, "for someone who just rewrote the laws of reality." Her hands slid forward over his shoulders and down across his chest, fingertips tracing the golden skin with slow, wondering care. "Tell me, Vince... do you still feel the warmth of ordinary hands? Or has all that power burned the feeling out of you?"
He turned inside the loose circle of her arms. His purple eyes caught the firelight and held it, dark and deliberate. One thumb rose to catch her lower lip, pressing until the soft flesh parted beneath the gentle pressure. He could feel the quick, involuntary catch of her breath.
"I feel every inch of you," he answered, voice dropping into a rough, possessive rasp that seemed to vibrate against her skin. "And right now I’m thinking about how long it’s been since I last had you in my arms. How every night on the march I woke up reaching for something that wasn’t there."
Elena’s soft, breathless laugh stirred the air between them. She did not pull away. Instead she leaned in until the full, soft weight of her breasts pressed against his bare torso, until she could feel the heavy, thunderous beat of his heart against her own. The linen of her tunic was thin; the heat of his skin soaked through it at once.
"Is that so?" She rested her hands on his belt, manicured nails catching against the worn leather and the cool brass of the buckle, teasing without undoing it. "And here I thought the great commander was entirely focused on strategy. You played the stoic so well across that war table. Every time those purple eyes found me I wondered how long it would take for that legendary restraint of yours to finally snap."
"My restraint died the second the door closed behind us," Vince whispered.
He moved with sudden, effortless grace. Before she could draw a full breath he had cupped her waist and walked her backward until the backs of her thighs met the edge of the heavy oak table near the fire. The wood was warm from the hearth. He stepped between her knees, tall frame looming, shadow falling across her like a second embrace. The heat of the flames licked at the side of her face; the scent of smoke and clean linen and his skin filled every breath she took.
Elena’s breath hitched. Color rose high across her cheeks, rosy and vivid in the amber light. "Vince..."
"You spent the entire campaign barking orders at generals and keeping every last soul in line," he murmured, mouth already trailing down the sensitive column of her neck. He nipped lightly at the frantic pulse point beneath her jaw until a soft, involuntary gasp escaped her. "Who’s giving the orders tonight, Elena? You... or me?"
"I think..." She gasped again as his lips found the hollow of her collarbone, "I think that new power of yours has spoiled you. You think you can simply take whatever you want."
"I don’t want just anything." The words were a playful growl against her skin. His hands slid beneath the loose hem of her tunic, warm palms mapping the smooth curve of her waist with excruciating patience, learning the exact place where her ribs gave way to softer flesh. "I want you. Every piece. Every sound. Every place that still remembers the shape of my hands."
Elena arched into the touch, fingers knotting in the dark silk of his hair, tugging until he lifted his face and met her gaze. Her breathing had gone fast and shallow. Weeks of unspent longing, of fear and relief and absolute devotion, lived in the heavy look she gave him.
"Then stop talking," she whispered, voice trembling with raw, needy conviction. "Stop holding back. Show me how badly you actually want me."
Vince’s eyes flared brighter. He did not kiss her gently. He claimed her mouth in a deep, fierce, uncompromising kiss that stole the air from her lungs and left the taste of him—smoke, salt, something darker—lingering on her tongue. Elena whimpered softly into the kiss, arms locking tight around his neck, pulling him as close as the space between two bodies would allow. The last thin walls of caution and command crumbled like ash between them.
Without breaking the kiss he lifted her from the table. She wrapped her legs securely around his waist; the tunic rode high on her thighs, cool air kissing newly bared skin before the heat of his body replaced it. He carried her across the firelit room toward the massive bed draped in deep velvet and soft silk. The mattress yielded beneath her when he laid her down. He lingered above her, gaze sweeping over the flush that painted her skin, the parted shine of her lips, the wild, breathless rise and fall of her chest. Firelight painted gold across every curve.
"You’re not leaving this bed tonight, Elena," he warned softly, hands already finding the hem of her tunic and drawing it upward with deliberate, unhurried care, exposing the smooth plane of her stomach, the soft undersides of her breasts, the quick shiver that ran through her at the cooler air.
Elena looked up at him through heavy-lidded eyes. A slow, intoxicating smile curved her mouth as she reached for the last buckle of his belt, fingers working the leather free with practiced ease.
"I wasn’t planning on running."
