Chapter 121: A New Tension
SAMANTHA
Darlington shifted closer to me, his movements slow and deliberate, as if he were approaching a frightened animal. The space between us diminished until I could feel the warmth radiating from his body. His eyes, those gentle amber pools, studied my face with an intensity that made my breath catch.
"How are you really feeling?" he asked softly, his voice barely above a whisper. "I can see you’re stressed. You don’t have to pretend with me."
I opened my mouth to deny it, to assure him that I was fine, but the words wouldn’t come. He was right. I was exhausted, broken, and barely holding myself together. The mask I had worn for so long was cracking, and he could see right through it. My hands trembled slightly, and I clasped them together to still the shaking.
"I’m... managing," I finally managed, my voice hollow and distant. The word felt inadequate, a poor description of the chaos swirling inside me.
Darlington’s brow furrowed with concern. He reached out, his fingers brushing a strand of hair from my face with such tenderness that it made my heart ache. The touch was featherlight, yet it sent a jolt of electricity through my entire body. "You know," he said, a soft smile playing on his lips, "you’re really pretty. And I like your eyes. They hold so much fire, even when you’re trying to hide it."
I blinked, utterly bewildered. What about me had Darlington so mesmerized? I was nothing special. Just a sex slave, broken and used, with bruises on my skin and darkness in my soul. Why would a prince, one of the most powerful men in the kingdom, look at me like I was something precious? I had no status, no power, no family to speak of. I was invisible to most, a tool for others to use and discard. Yet here he was, looking at me as if I were the most fascinating creature he had ever encountered.
"Your Highness, I don’t understand," I whispered, shaking my head in confusion. My fingers twisted in the blanket, seeking something to anchor myself. "I’m just..."
"You’re just Samantha," he finished for me, his smile widening. "And that’s more than enough."
Before I could respond, a sharp knock sounded at the door. The sound cut through the intimate moment like a blade, and I instinctively tensed. My heart leaped into my throat. Who could be visiting at this hour? Darlington’s expression shifted, his gentle demeanor replaced by the cool composure of a prince. The warmth in his eyes dimmed, replaced by guarded alertness.
"Who is it?" he called out, his voice even but firm.
"It’s Vera, Your Highness," a woman’s voice replied from the other side. "The librarian."
I sat up straighter, my heart beginning to race. Vera? What could she possibly want with Darlington at this hour? The librarian was a quiet, unassuming woman who kept to herself. She had never sought out the princes before, at least not that I knew of. She was the type of person who faded into the background, invisible and forgettable. This was highly unusual.
Darlington glanced at me, a flicker of curiosity in his eyes. He seemed as puzzled as I was. "Come in," he said.
The door creaked open, and Vera entered. She was an older woman with graying hair and spectacles perched on her nose. Her movements were slow, deliberate, as if each step cost her great effort. She walked across the room with measured grace and knelt at Prince Darlington’s feet, her head bowed in submission.
"Good evening, my prince," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "I have something to reveal to you."
Darlington’s eyes narrowed. His body tensed, and I could see the wariness creeping into his posture. "What is it?"
Vera lifted her head, her gaze steady despite her obvious nervousness. Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, and I could see them trembling. "A certain young maiden in this palace has been trying to look for ways to bring down the princes and his brothers. And she is here to fix that for them."
The words hung in the air like a thundercloud. My blood ran cold. Someone was plotting against the princes? Who would be foolish enough to attempt such a thing? The penalty for treason was death, a slow and painful death at that. Whoever this person was, they were either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid.
Darlington rose from his seat, his body tense with barely contained fury. His hands clenched at his sides, and I could see the muscles in his jaw working. "Offenses like these are punished by treason," he said, his voice dangerously low. "Do you know who it is?"
Vera swallowed hard, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She seemed to be wrestling with herself, torn between duty and fear. "Yes, my prince. I know. But please promise me you will deal with it civilly. She is young and perhaps misguided. She may not fully understand the weight of her actions. I beg of you, show her mercy."
Darlington’s jaw tightened, and I could see the conflict in his eyes. "How do you know this?"
Vera’s eyes flickered with something that might have been guilt. She took a shaky breath before continuing. "I am the librarian, my prince. The person came to borrow dangerous books. Books that contain forbidden knowledge. Books about poisons, about curses, about ways to weaken the bond between a wolf and their pack. I recognized the titles immediately. I knew I had to come to you."
My heart pounded in my chest. Forbidden books? Poisons and curses? This wasn’t just gossip or petty rivalry. This was something far more sinister. Someone in the palace was actively plotting against the royal family, and they were arming themselves with dark knowledge. The thought made my stomach churn with dread.
Darlington paced the room, his hands clasped behind his back. Each step was measured, controlled, but I could see the storm brewing beneath the surface. "Who is it, Vera? Tell me."
Vera hesitated, her gaze darting toward me for a brief moment before returning to the prince. There was something in that glance, a flicker of recognition or warning, that made my skin prickle.
