Playing The Alphas

Chapter 120: He Is Nicer

SAMANTHA

Jayce did not relent in his relentless assault until it was already dark outside. The world outside the window had faded into deep purple shadows, and the room was lit only by the soft glow of lamps. I was utterly spent, sprawled on the bed, drained of every ounce of energy. My limbs felt like lead, and my mind was a fog of exhaustion and pain. Jayce, in stark contrast, was vibrant and exuberant. He moved about the room with the energy of someone who had just enjoyed a pleasant afternoon, completely unbothered by what he had done to me.

At last, he unlocked my chains, summoned a servant, and instructed her to prepare a meal for the both of us. The clinking of the chains being removed was a sound of relief, but the relief was short-lived. I knew I was still trapped in his world, still at his mercy.

"Unnecessary," I dismissed coldly. My voice was flat, devoid of emotion. I had no desire to stay for dinner, nor did I wish to endure Jayce’s presence any longer. He had thoroughly spoiled my appetite. The thought of sitting across from him, pretending that everything was normal, made my stomach churn.

I managed to dress, suppressing the pain, and made my way toward the door. Each movement was a battle. My fingers fumbled with the buttons of my blouse, and I could feel the bruises forming on my skin. But I refused to show weakness. I refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing me break.

Jayce, rather than obstructing me, propped his chin on his hand, reclined on the bed, and observed my departure with an unsettling smile. His eyes followed me like a predator watching its prey retreat. I could feel his gaze on my back, and it made my skin crawl.

Using the wall for support, I staggered away from his villa. The discomfort in my body intensified with each step. I felt increasingly wretched, my legs ached, and my intimate areas felt like they had been overstretched. Every movement sent sharp pains shooting through my body. I nearly collapsed several times, catching myself against the rough stone of the walls.

Swallowing my tears, I resisted showing my vulnerability to the world. I bit my lip so hard I could taste blood. I would not cry. I would not give anyone the satisfaction of seeing my pain.

Yet fate seemed cruel. As I continued forward, my legs suddenly betrayed me, twitching uncontrollably. My muscles gave out completely, and I lost my balance and tumbled forward. I braced myself for the impact with the ground, my arms reaching out to break my fall.

At that moment, two hands reached out to steady me. They were warm and strong, catching me before I could hit the ground. "Are you okay?" A soothing voice reached my ears.

I looked up to find Darlington standing before me. His gaze, as gentle as ever, softened upon seeing the disarray and bruises on me. His eyes traveled over my disheveled appearance, my torn clothing, the marks on my skin. "What happened to you?" he asked with concern.

I bit my lip, a surge of humiliation rising within me. The sight of Darlington seeing me in such a pitiful state struck a deep chord of distress. Of all the people who could have found me like this, why did it have to be him? He was the kind one, the gentle one. And now he was seeing me at my lowest, broken and used.

At that moment, I would have preferred to collapse entirely rather than have him witness my degradation. I wanted to disappear, to melt into the ground and never be seen again.

Silence fell as I struggled to find words. What could I possibly say? How could I explain what had happened to me? The truth was too shameful, too painful.

Darlington began to speak again, but my exhaustion overwhelmed me, and my vision began to fade. The world around me grew dark, and I could feel myself slipping away. The last thing I saw was Darlington’s worried face, his eyes filled with concern.

The next thing I knew, I had lost consciousness. When I awoke, I found myself in an unfamiliar room, lying in a plush bed. The sheets were soft against my skin, and the pillows cradled my aching head. Still groggy, I tried to sit up and take in my surroundings. The room exuded luxury, with elegant furnishings and tasteful decorations. It was a place I had never been to.

I kept asking myself where I was. My thoughts were a tangled mess, fragments of memories mixing with confusion. The last memory I had was of Darlington, who had been the last person I saw before everything went dark. Could it be... Was I in his room? Had he brought me here?

A series of gentle knocks on the door interrupted my thoughts. I turned to see Darlington standing in the doorway. "You are awake." He walked over to me and asked softly, "Are you feeling alright? Is anything wrong?"

Seeing him, I tensed up. Gripping the blanket tightly, I shook my head and stammered, "I-I’m okay..." My voice was weak, barely above a whisper.

Darlington nodded, his expression one of gentle reassurance. "You fainted because you were too exhausted. I had no choice but to bring you here. I hope you are not frightened."

I avoided his gaze, looked down, and replied listlessly, "No, I’m not... Thank you..." My fingers twisted in the blanket, unable to meet his eyes.

I suspected he had noticed the kiss marks on my body but chose not to mention them, instead glossing over the situation to spare me further embarrassment. His discretion was a kindness I hadn’t expected. Bitterness mingled with a strange warmth in my heart. His kindness, despite everything, touched me. He had seen me at my worst, and instead of judging me, he had helped me.

Darlington smiled warmly, "It was nothing. Just a small favor."

His smile quickened my heartbeat. I dared not meet his eyes. The warmth in his gaze was too much to bear. I sat up, preparing to leave. "Thank you, Your Highness. I should head back to my place now."

At that moment, the aroma of food wafted into the room. I was momentarily taken aback. My stomach growled in response, betraying my earlier claim of having no appetite. The scent was rich and inviting, making my mouth water.

A servant entered, bearing a tray of dishes, and set them on a table. The food looked delicious, steaming and fresh. "Uh... What’s this?" I asked, looking at Darlington in confusion.

He gestured toward the dishes. "You should eat before you leave. If you faint on your way back to your house, there will be no one to assist you." His light-hearted comment brought a smile to my face and eased some of my tension. He was trying to make me feel comfortable, to treat me like a person rather than a burden.

"Okay. Thank you very much, Your Highness," I said, smiling back at him.
