The Grand Catastrophe

Chapter 10: I’m Running Out of Names, part three (63)

...

Calvaria looked around at the rest of the night sky. The plan was moving on without a hitch. The one downside though, was that she had interact more, and be partially carried by, Evil Eye. Now, this alone wasn’t a bad thing. Evil Eye was a fairly nice person to talk to.

It was simply Anna. She was glaring daggers and knives into the poor woman. She was also glaring daggers into Calvaria as well. She herself was up on Nabe’s shoulders, her head scanning the city below.

It was a simple thing, yet it didn’t pull away from the fact that she was glaring. Calvaria simply sighed and shook head as she was held aloft in the sky. Anna’s actions were starting to grate on her mind. She would have to talk to her about boundaries and other such things.

It was then that she noticed a group of men getting attacked by a group of demons. She looked to them, seeing how they were being overwhelmed, and asked Nabe and Evil Eye to toss her.

“Toss me,” she said, her tone serious.

The two looked to each other, shrugged, and tossed the woman into the fray. She pulled her sword from its sheath and pulled her estoc that she had been reminded that she had from its own sheath at her waist. She soared through the air, her feet hitting one of the demons head on.

It crumpled as she fell on it, her knees bending to take the impact. The overeating, as that was the demon that she had slain, vanished into particles. The men behind her that the demon had threatened shifted. Their forms making the light of the moon dance on the ground beneath their feet.

The street was wide, so it held many a demon. It had been covered in the dead, both dead demons and humans. Though the demons vanished quickly after death, for some reason their blood and viscera didn’t.

The demons looked to each other, and then back to the woman herself. After seemingly taking a second to discuss with themselves, they charged her. There was a wide array of foes for her to slay. Yet, both demon dogs and imps fell to the swinging of her long-sword and estoc.

She rushed forth as well, her estoc stabbing enemies. She thought about mild things. She could afford to do so. Her foes were week, and they couldn’t even do anything to her. She wondered how the others were doing in the plan. She wondered what they thought about this whole thing.

When she was done killing her enemies, she wiped her blades off, and let the two magic casters carry her off without much fan fair. The soldiers that she left behind to clean up simply looked at her as if she was a goddess, or the messenger of one.

In many ways, she was. Yet, she wasn’t really in the right place to preach such things. She needed to wait, to let Pandor’s Actress get into place, and act as she was now so the plan could continue.

She soared in the sky for longer, letter the two magic casters carry her off where ever she was needed. Sooner rather than later, she was to make her way to the center after taking out a large portion of her foes. The demons had been slightly boosted by the fire wall, so the men needed help, more help than normal.

She shook her head at that thought. Of course, that was perfectly reasonable, to not be strong enough to face off against such foes. After all, from what she was able to tell, the majority of these men were only level 6 or so. Even then, they were only equipped with wooden spears for some odd reason.

“Alright, so how are we doing this? The rest of the plan, I mean?” Evil eye asked, her tone light.

“I would think that that would be obvious,” Anna said, her voice teasing, “we simply kill the rest of the demons until he shows up. Then we play our card and he is banished. After all, from what we know of him, he’ll only come out if all of subordinates are gone or threatened,” she re-explained.

Evil Eye rolled her eyes behind her mask. Anna had been teasing her all night. It was starting to get on her nerves.

Calvaria, meanwhile, was not paying attention to their conversation. She was bust trying to figure out where she was to land next. After all, if the plan was to continue, she needed to kill more demons. She sighed, this night was going to be rather long, wasn’t it.

Climb looked around, his eyes soaking in all the damage to the city, and all the dead that had been here. There was nothing now. There wasn’t even blood to follow, no trail. It made a shiver go down his spine.

Brain was with him, along with Lockmeier. Some of Lockmeier’s old acquaintances were with them as well. They were all told to scout out the area, so that was what they were doing.

They were walking down the street, their feet making little noise as they scuttled along the wide street. It was dark out, with the moon high in the sky. Climb’s head was darting left and right, looking all across the street.

The stone was bare, not even slicked with blood. It was as if someone had cleaned it. The buildings around them looked to have been broken into, like the people of this place had been dragged out. Climb shook his head of those images, body shivering at those thoughts.

It was then that he noticed a rather large warehouse. The doors looked to be closed, and he could hear a faint shuffling from the inside. He gestured to the rest of his group to the building itself, Brain and the others nodding their heads at him as he asked if they check it out.

He made his way over to the place, his feet carrying him there. As he now stood next to the door that the noises were coming from, he placed his hand on the handle and the other on one of the bells that detected traps and the like that he had been given.

He rang it, the door not responding as he tried them all out on it. He then smiled and opened the door. Slowly, but surely, he peered inside. It was then that his eyes locked onto those of a young boy. He looked at the lad, somewhat shocked as the kid looked back, his mouth wide open in shock.

The building was rather large, and it seemed to hold a multitude of people. He opened the door fully, his frame filling out the door. There were people inside. They looked on at him, shocked and scared. There were children, adults and elderly people.

“Hello everyone,” he called out, catching their attention, “I am a soldier of the king. I am here to rescue you all!” he called out, their voices, which were already low, mellowed out even more in slight disbelief.

It was then that Brain walked through the door. The people’s attention was now on him. He looked across them all, and spoke then. His tone was flat, yet firm. Like a plain of glass, it was.

“I am Brain Unglaus, good friend of Gazef Stronoff,” he said, and the civilians smiled, their postures relaxing, “This young man here has been sent by the princess herself to aid you all. Demons have invaded part of the city. We are all currently in said section of the city.”

As he said that, everyone started to panic. Their voices raising and the people began to flail around. Climb raised his arms to try and calm them, yet what made them quiet down was another sound. Brain unsheathed his blade.

“Everyone, there are demons about they are searching for you all. We are here to escort you all out. Yet I fear that some have already found us. Stay here, I shall take a look,” he said, and just as he finished speaking, a thump sounded out on top of the roof.
