Chapter 29: Beating Killgrave
A truly insane man.
I should shut that man's mouth first before taking him and the woman beside him away from this place.
If Killgrave’s mind control suddenly disappeared in the middle of this gunfight, those two groups of gangsters might immediately turn their attention toward me.
And that was clearly not a situation I wanted.
So the plan was simple. Shut Killgrave’s mouth, take him and the woman away from this place, and once everything was safe… only then could I kill Killgrave without any interference.
As for whether Killgrave’s ability worked through the words he spoke or merely through his thoughts, I didn’t really know. There was no point standing here for too long just to guess how the mechanism worked.
The only thing I needed to do was try it myself.
I immediately jumped from one rooftop to another. My shoes touched the concrete surface with a soft sound before my body shot forward again. Each leap felt light, my body moving quickly across the rows of old rooftops lined closely together.
From up here, the scene was much clearer—the constant flashes of gunfire, shards of glass falling from windows struck by stray bullets, and the shouts of gangsters exchanging gunfire without pause.
Several cars parked along the roadside were already riddled with bullet holes.
Hell’s Kitchen was completely empty.
No pedestrians. No passing cars.
Only the sound of gunfire continuously breaking the silence of the afternoon.
Was the street empty because these two groups were in the middle of a shootout? Or had this place always been like this? A neighborhood so accustomed to violence that people preferred to stay away long before trouble even began.
Well… whatever.
Whichever the reason was didn’t matter to me right now.
I quickly descended along the side of a building and crawled along the wall behind where Killgrave was standing. My body pressed against the cold, rough brick wall as my eyes carefully watched the man from behind.
The distance between us slowly grew shorter.
Killgrave was still standing casually, as if completely unaware of my presence behind him.
When the distance was close enough, I moved immediately.
I jumped down from the wall and fired a web straight at Killgrave’s face.
“Thwip!”
The familiar sound rang out softly, but the result was immediate. The spider web shot forward and covered Killgrave’s face in an instant, sticking tightly from his chin to his nose.
Purple Man was instantly startled and reflexively raised both of his hands, trying to tear the webbing off his face.
But I didn’t give Killgrave any chance to do anything.
Two more webs shot out almost simultaneously and immediately wrapped around both of Killgrave’s hands, restraining him before he could tear the web off his face.
Before Killgrave could react again, I fired another web at his body. The web instantly bound Killgrave tightly, wrapping around his chest, shoulders, and legs before finally pulling his body slightly off the ground.
Now Killgrave was truly tied up like an overly tight package.
After that, I turned my head toward the woman standing beside him.
Without much thought, I fired a web at her as well. The web shot forward and quickly wrapped around the woman’s body, pinning both of her arms tightly to her sides.
The woman didn’t resist at all.
No screams. No attempt to dodge.
Of course… because she was still under Killgrave’s mind control.
I quickly pulled both of them and leapt away from the scene. My body swung between the buildings of Hell’s Kitchen, spider webs shooting from my wrists toward the edges of distant rooftops, carrying me swiftly from one building to the next.
The evening wind hit my body as I moved through the air, while the gunfire that had been so loud earlier slowly faded into the distance behind me.
Down below, the streets looked smaller every time I swung forward. The muzzle flashes that had once been clearly visible were now nothing more than small flickers of light blinking far away.
A few moments later, I landed inside an abandoned building. The place was dark and dusty, as if no one had touched it for years.
Most of the windows were already shattered, leaving jagged glass frames along their edges. The floor was covered with broken concrete, snapped wood, and scattered shards of glass that cracked softly whenever they were stepped on.
The smell of dust and dampness filled the air.
A pretty good place for interrogation… or murder.
I dropped the two of them onto the floor roughly.
Their bodies hit the dusty ground, sending a thin cloud of dust drifting into the air.
Then I hung Killgrave from the ceiling using my web, leaving his body dangling several dozen centimeters above the floor. The web wrapped tightly around him, supporting his entire weight and leaving him with no footing at all.
That position made it much easier for me to hit him.
Without saying anything, I immediately drove my fist into Killgrave’s stomach.
“Thud!”
Killgrave’s body swung slightly from the impact, like a sandbag hanging from a rope.
I kept hitting him.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
My fist slammed into Killgrave’s stomach again and again in a steady rhythm. Each blow made his body sway slightly in the air before returning to its original position, only to be struck again by the next punch.
I didn’t even bother counting how many times my fist hit his stomach anymore. Time simply passed—ten minutes? Maybe more.
What was certain was that if his mouth hadn’t still been covered by the spider web, he would have vomited everything in his stomach long ago.
Killgrave’s breathing sounded heavy and uneven from behind the web covering his face.
Hm? Did that woman finally wake up?
“Haah… haah… ahh? Aaaggghhhh!” The woman suddenly screamed while clutching her head with both hands. Her body trembled violently, like someone who had just awakened from a nightmare that felt far too real.
She staggered a few steps before finally collapsing to her knees on the dusty floor.
Her sobs burst out uncontrollably.
Damn… that purple-skinned lunatic really deserves to die.
Without hesitation, I lifted my foot and grabbed one of Killgrave’s dangling legs. With a quick motion, I stomped down on his thigh with all my strength.
“Krak!”
The sound of bone breaking rang clearly through the empty room, a sharp echo bouncing off the cracked concrete walls.
Killgrave’s leg snapped instantly at an unnatural angle. His body began thrashing wildly in the air as he struggled to move despite the web still holding him in place. Blood slowly began to flow from his thigh, dripping onto the floor in dark red drops.
“…Can… can I be the one to kill that man?”
A voice suddenly spoke.
I turned toward the direction the voice came from.
The woman who had been clutching her head earlier was now looking at me. Her body was still trembling, and her breathing was unstable, but the expression on her face had changed.
Her voice was still shaking, but her eyes… her eyes were filled with something far darker.
Anger. A deep and heavy anger.
“No,” I answered calmly. “I’m the one who’s going to kill this man. But if you want to make this bastard suffer first… go ahead.”
The woman looked at me for a few seconds.
“Thank you… thank you…” she finally said quietly.
She slowly stood up. Her steps were still slightly unsteady, like someone who had just regained control over her body after being deprived of freedom for a long time.
