Chapter 014: Business Trip 2
After receiving the business trip notice, I couldn't settle down at work for a long time.
It wasn't anything else, though I didn't want to admit it, but I was worried about my devoted wife and adopted son at home.
I wasn't afraid that Yumi would do anything to betray me, but I feared Jihoon might do something.
After all, Jihoon was still young and prone to impulsive behavior. Being in the throes of adolescence, he was strong and vigorous.
What if...
The thought of all the possible scenarios made me unable to sit still any longer.
I hurried home with some equipment, only to find the house empty.
Although I had a full set of professional gear, installing real-time surveillance devices was no longer feasible.
My business trip was tomorrow, leaving only a few hours today for installation.
While real-time monitoring was impossible, hidden cameras were feasible.
I’d already installed one on the curtain in Jihoon’s room, but it was compact with limited storage, the rechargeable battery wouldn’t last long.
After arriving home, I used my limited hours to install temporary hidden cameras throughout the house.
This included our bedroom with Yumi, Jihoon's bedroom, the living room, and the bathroom.
Finding both optimal filming angles and concealed locations proved challenging, but I ultimately succeeded.
With my professional expertise, Yumi and Jihoon would never detect them.
Though installed, there was one drawback: these cameras were temporary and couldn't be monitored in real time.
I'd have to wait until I returned home to copy and review all the footage.
This meant I couldn't immediately know or stop anything if something happened.
Still, compared to the original camera, these were plugged in and had massive storage, enough to record for over half a month.
By evening, I returned home as scheduled.
As our family of three ate dinner, I pondered whether to tell Yumi about my upcoming business trip now, at the table or later in the bedroom.
Watching Jihoon buried in his food, I felt something peculiar.
It definitely wasn’t affection; perhaps from the moment he stepped into my home, I’d regarded him as an adversary.
"Honey, I'll be leaving on a business trip tomorrow..."
After much deliberation, I decided to tell Yumi at the dinner table, keeping an eye on that kid Jihoon out of the corner of my eye.
Upon hearing the news, Jihoon abruptly stopped chewing. He paused only briefly.
The only regret was that, with his head down, I couldn't see his expression.
Still, I could guess he was probably quite pleased, after all, he'd never been particularly close to me.
"Oh, how long will you be gone?"
Yumi seemed entirely accustomed to my frequent trips, showing no surprise.
"About half a month..."
For some reason, when I was about to speak the truth, I suddenly blurted out a lie.
I was only going for a week, but out came "half a month."
Perhaps deep down, I wanted to hold onto some special initiative.
"Oh... Alright. I'll pack your things later. For two weeks, you'll need to bring more stuff..."
Yumi's expression darkened upon hearing I'd be gone for two weeks.
Every time I left for an extended period, she became deeply reluctant to see me go.
After dinner, Yumi tidied the room and began packing my luggage, while Jihoon returned to his own room.
Yumi kept giving me reminders as she packed, it was always like this whenever I went on a business trip.
When she finished, we lay together on the bed, embracing.
This time, neither of us played with our phones. Instead, we held each other, savoring the intimacy before parting.
"Honey, be careful at home. Stay safe."
All my worries boiled down to just those few words.
"Don't worry, honey. Besides, we have a son now, right? When you're gone, he'll protect me..."
Yumi murmured softly, her eyes closed, her cheek nestled against my shoulder.
Hearing her words, I couldn't help but smile bitterly.
It seemed my warning had fallen on deaf ears. She hadn't grasped the meaning behind my words at all.
"He'll protect you" My greatest fear was precisely that son she spoke of, the one she believed could shield her.
After an unknown amount of time, Yumi had fallen into a deep sleep.
Tonight, she hadn't gone to accompany Jihoon, and it seemed she wouldn't in the future either.
Though Yumi slept, I lay awake, my heart heavy with unease.
Others might see no cause for worry, but from the moment Jihoon stepped through my door, I’d harbored a bad feeling, perhaps that sixth sense writers possess, whose intuition often proves uncannily accurate.
Early the next morning, I shouldered my bag with mixed feelings and headed to the company.
Finally, I boarded our camera van with my colleagues.
As the vehicle left the city limits, I couldn't help but glance back at my hometown.
But the city was too vast, my home was nowhere in sight.
"Alright, Old Kim, stop staring. Worried about your pretty, lovely wife again?"
My usually close colleague teased me as I kept glancing back.
His words startled me…his offhand joke had hit the nail on the head.
I could only laugh it off. I was used to it.
Colleagues and friends knew I had a physical disability, and I'd long since grown accustomed to appearing calm and composed around them.
As they gradually got to know my wife, Yumi, such jokes became rare.
After all, her character and integrity were universally admired.
Upon arrival, we dove straight into filming preparations.
During a break, Yumi called me.
Come evening, our long phone chats were inevitable.
During our calls, Yumi usually talked more than I did, sharing amusing stories from school and occasionally venting about work frustrations.
This time, she mentioned Jihoon most frequently, updating me on his studies and mood that day.
I knew she always assumed I worried deeply about this child… after all, he was the one I’d brought back.
The first night ended like that. By the time we hung up, it was already past nine.
