Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 270: The Space Between Houses

For a while, the conversation drifted into lighter territory.

Luke accidentally locking himself out of the house again.

Phil trying to assemble a "minimalist" grill that apparently contained two hundred screws.

A neighbor starting a feud over recycling bins.

Normal things.

And somehow that normality affected Haley more than any serious conversation had.

Because she realized this was what she'd actually been mourning:

not constant romance,

not dramatic passion—

shared life.

The effortless habit of existing around each other.

Then at one point Haley laughed hard enough at one of Luke's recent disasters that she had to lean against the patio railing.

Gael watched her quietly.

Not interrupting.

Just taking it in.

Alex noticed that too.

The way his entire attention softened around Haley when she forgot to guard herself.

And unfortunately—

Haley noticed him noticing.

Which immediately made her narrow her eyes suspiciously.

"What?"

"You're doing the face again."

"What face?"

"The emotionally attached one."

Alex nearly choked on air.

Gael looked completely unashamed.

"That's because I'm emotionally attached."

Haley stared at him for a second before looking away too quickly.

"That answer should be illegal."

But she was smiling again.

Alex looked down at her textbook to hide the complicated twist in her chest.

Because moments like this made the future feel both more possible and more dangerous.

Then Haley settled into the chair beside Alex and stretched her legs out toward the yard.

The late afternoon light had turned golden now, washing warmth across both patios.

"You know what's strange?" Haley murmured softly.

Alex glanced sideways at her.

"What?"

"I don't feel exhausted anymore."

The confession quieted everyone slightly.

Because over the last month Haley carried sadness like physical weight.

But now?

She looked lighter.

Looser.

Then Haley continued thoughtfully.

"I think being angry all the time was actually making me tired."

Gael's expression softened immediately.

Alex's too.

Then Haley suddenly frowned slightly at both of them.

"Okay wow." She pointed between them. "You two are being coordinated right now and I don't trust it."

Alex felt genuine panic flash for half a second.

Too sharp.

Too fast.

She forced herself to roll her eyes.

"We're literally just sitting here."

"Exactly." Haley narrowed her eyes harder. "Synchrony."

Gael hid a smile badly.

Alex kicked lightly at Haley's foot.

"You need hobbies."

"I have hobbies."

"Profiling people isn't a hobby."

"It absolutely is."

That finally broke the tension.

Haley laughed again while Alex shook her head dramatically.

And for one suspended moment in the warm backyard light—

everything almost felt ordinary again.
