Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 269: Backyard Light

The quiet after her confession felt different.

Not tense.

Not fragile.

Just honest in a way that would've terrified Haley a few weeks ago.

Now she mostly felt exposed.

Then she took another sip of iced coffee to buy herself time.

Gael watched her over the fence for a moment before speaking softly.

"You know what I kept thinking about while I was gone?"

Haley looked toward him carefully.

"What?"

"The backyard lights."

She blinked once.

"The string lights?"

"Yeah." A faint smile touched his mouth. "You used to leave them on when you couldn't sleep."

The memory hit instantly.

Warm summer nights.

Talking across patios at two in the morning because neither wanted to officially end the conversation yet.

Haley laughed softly under her breath.

"You noticed that?"

"I noticed everything about you."

The sentence landed too cleanly.

Haley looked down immediately, cheeks warming despite herself.

"This is why getting over you felt medically impossible."

Gael laughed quietly.

Then she looked back up at him, more thoughtful now.

"You know what's weird?" A small pause. "I thought seeing you again would make me feel behind somehow."

"How?"

"Like I failed at moving on."

The honesty in her voice settled softly between them.

Then she shrugged lightly.

"But it doesn't really feel like that anymore." Her eyes drifted toward the neighboring house again. "It just feels like something important came back."

That one stayed with him.

Because Haley rarely phrased feelings carelessly.

If she called something important, she meant it deeply.

Then the back door behind her slid open suddenly.

Alex stepped outside carrying a textbook and immediately froze when she saw them talking across the fence.

The image hit her all at once:

Haley barefoot on the patio smiling softly,

Gael leaning against the fence looking more at peace than he had in weeks,

sunlight spilling across both yards like nothing had ever broken between them.

Then Haley looked over her shoulder.

"Oh good, a witness."

Alex recovered quickly.

"A witness to suburban yearning apparently."

Haley pointed at her immediately.

"See? This is why I don't tell you things."

"You literally texted me during the yearning."

Fair.

Then Alex settled into a patio chair nearby while pretending to focus on her textbook.

Pretending very hard.

Because internally, the scene in front of her hurt and healed something simultaneously.

Haley looked happy.

Genuinely happy.

And Gael looked lighter every time she smiled.

Alex wanted that for both of them.

Even while another part of her quietly ached knowing she would eventually become the complication hidden underneath moments exactly like this.

Then Haley looked back toward Gael again.

"You know what the annoying part is?"

"What?"

"You fit back here too easily."

Alex's chest tightened slightly at the sentence.

Because she understood that feeling now too well herself.

Then Gael smiled softly across the fence.

"I live here."

Haley rolled her eyes.

"You know that's not what I meant."
