Chapter 234: Wanting to Believe
Gloria moved away from him slowly after that.
Not because she wanted distance.
Because she needed space to think without immediately kissing him again.
Then she crossed toward the kitchen island and leaned lightly against it, arms folded tightly while her emotions spiraled in too many directions at once.
Alex.
That revelation still echoed loudly in her head.
Then she laughed softly under her breath.
"Of course it's Alex."
Gael frowned faintly.
"What does that mean?"
Gloria looked toward him with a mixture of disbelief and exhausted amusement.
"She sees everything." A faint smile touched her mouth. "And she loves deeply when she finally lets herself."
The sadness underneath the observation lingered.
Because Gloria knew exactly how hard it must have been for Alex to surrender at all.
Then quieter:
"And Haley trusts her more than anyone."
That truth settled heavily between them again.
Always Haley.
Then Gloria asked softly:
"Does Claire know?"
"Yes."
Gloria closed her eyes briefly.
The architecture of this situation felt almost impossible to comprehend now:
mother,
daughter,
sister,
all connected through the same man,
all trying desperately not to destroy Haley.
Then she whispered:
"This sounds insane when you say it out loud."
"It probably is."
That almost made her smile again.
Then silence settled while Gloria stared down at the marble countertop thoughtfully.
Finally she spoke.
"You know what's frightening?" Her voice lowered slightly. "Part of me feels relieved."
Gael stayed quiet, letting her continue.
"I spent weeks trying to force myself back into a version of my life that suddenly felt too small." She looked toward him carefully now. "And hearing you speak like this…" A pause. "It feels like breathing again."
The honesty in the confession deepened the atmosphere instantly.
Because Gloria had spent so long drowning in guilt that relief itself now felt suspicious.
Then she laughed softly once.
"This is how cult leaders probably sound."
"That bad?"
"Yes." She pointed at him lightly. "You keep making chaos sound spiritually liberating."
That actually pulled a real laugh from both of them.
Then Gloria quieted again.
And when she spoke next, her voice sounded fragile in a way it rarely did.
"I don't know if I'm brave enough for public."
There it was.
The real fear.
Not loving him.
Not even being loved alongside others.
Exposure.
Jay.
Manny.
The family.
The judgment.
Then softer:
"I think losing Manny's trust would destroy me."
Gael crossed slowly toward her again.
"I know."
No pressure.
No demand.
Just understanding.
Then Gloria looked up at him carefully.
"And if I choose secrecy?"
"Then I love you privately."
The simplicity of the answer nearly broke her emotionally.
Because there was no resentment in it.
No punishment.
Choice.
Then she whispered shakily:
"You really mean all of this."
"Yes."
Always certainty now.
God.
Then Gloria stepped closer again slowly until only inches separated them.
"You know what the worst part is?"
"What?"
"I believe you."
The confession hung softly between them.
Because that was the true point of no return:
not desire,
not passion—
faith.
