Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 232: What Distance Did to Them

Gloria pulled him inside fully and shut the door almost blindly before kissing him again.

Not careful.

Not controlled.

Everything between them felt stripped raw now.

Weeks of trying to suppress him,

avoid him,

be loyal,

be responsible—

all collapsing under the unbearable relief of finally touching him again.

Then she pressed both hands against his chest and forced herself to pull back just enough to breathe.

"You should not be here," she whispered.

Still she didn't let go of him.

Gael looked directly into her eyes.

"I couldn't keep pretending distance was fixing this."

The honesty in his voice shattered another piece of her resolve instantly.

Because she knew he was right.

Nothing had healed.

Nothing had faded.

The longing had only become quieter and deeper.

Then Gloria laughed softly once under her breath.

Broken sound.

"You know what's horrible?" She looked away briefly. "I spent every day hoping you would come anyway."

That confession hung heavily between them.

Then his hand brushed gently against her face.

"I know."

The certainty in that answer made her chest ache.

Then Gloria whispered shakily:

"I hate how much I missed you."

"You don't hate it."

"No," she admitted quietly. "I hate what it means."

That was the real pain underneath everything.

Not the feelings themselves.

The consequences attached to them.

Then silence settled for a few seconds while they stood close together in the quiet house.

Finally Gloria asked the question living underneath all the others.

"How is Haley?"

Gael's expression softened instantly at her name.

Gloria noticed immediately.

Still love.

Still deep.

And strangely—

that didn't hurt her the way it once might have.

Because now she understood:

his love didn't erase other love.

Then he answered softly.

"She still misses me."

Gloria closed her eyes briefly.

Of course she did.

Then quieter:

"And Claire?"

"She still loves me too."

That one tightened something painfully inside her chest despite everything.

Not jealousy exactly.

The overwhelming scale of it all.

Then Gloria looked at him carefully.

"And you still want all of us."

Not accusation.

Recognition.

"Yes."

Immediate answer.

No hesitation anymore.

Then he stepped closer again slowly.

"I'm done treating love like something that only counts if it fits socially."

The conviction in his voice hit her deeply.

Because Jay loved steadily.

Comfortably.

But this?

This felt consuming.

Transformative.

Dangerous enough to ruin lives.

Then Gloria whispered softly:

"You're asking for something impossible."

Gael shook his head lightly.

"No." His hand settled carefully against her waist again. "I'm asking people to stop lying about what they feel."

The sentence stole her breath for a second.

Because she realized with terrifying clarity:

part of her no longer wanted to go back to the life where she suppressed this forever.

Then Gloria leaned into him again slowly, eyes closing briefly.

"You know Manny hugged me last night and told me Haley loved me too much not to forgive me eventually."

The pain in her voice changed the atmosphere instantly.

Then quieter:

"And all I could think was that if he ever knew what I've become…" Her voice cracked slightly. "It would break his heart."

Gael held her tighter immediately.

And for the first time since this began—

Gloria admitted the truth fully to herself:

she wasn't trying to escape these feelings anymore.

She was trying to find a way to survive them without losing everyone she loved.
