Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 230: Splitting in Two

Alex lay awake long after Haley finally fell asleep beside her.

Again.

That was becoming a pattern now:

Haley sleeping peacefully while Alex stared into the dark feeling emotionally divided between two lives.

One life was this room.

Shared childhood.

Late-night talks.

Years of trust built so deeply Haley still reached for her instinctively in her sleep.

The other life waited across the city in the penthouse.

Secret plans.

Quiet certainty.

The terrifying emotional calm she felt every time she was with him.

And increasingly, Alex no longer knew which version of herself felt more real.

Then beside her, Haley shifted slightly and mumbled sleepily:

"…stop thinking so loud."

Alex almost laughed despite herself.

"You're asleep."

"I can still sense spiraling."

That sounded exactly like Haley.

Then Haley settled closer unconsciously, one arm lightly across Alex's waist now.

The intimacy of it hurt.

Because Haley trusted closeness completely.

Never guarded herself around Alex emotionally.

Then softly, eyes still closed:

"You disappear inside your head when you're sad."

Alex's throat tightened immediately.

Because the worst part was that Haley still understood her perfectly.

Then she whispered carefully:

"I'm not sad."

Not entirely a lie anymore.

Haley made a sleepy thoughtful sound.

"Then guilty."

Alex physically stopped breathing for a second.

Panic flashed violently through her chest.

But Haley just kept talking half-asleep:

"You get quiet when you feel guilty about not taking care of everybody."

The tension drained from Alex slowly afterward.

God.

Haley still interpreted everything through Alex's usual emotional patterns.

Not suspicion.

Never suspicion.

Then Haley opened her eyes slightly in the dim light.

"You know none of this is your responsibility, right?"

The kindness in the sentence nearly broke Alex emotionally.

Because Haley still believed Alex was carrying the family out of love instead of hiding from it too.

Then Haley whispered:

"You're allowed to want things for yourself too."

The words landed like emotional cruelty from the universe itself.

Because suddenly Alex realized:

Haley would probably mean that even after everything someday.

Just not like this.

Not now.

Then she brushed lightly through Haley's hair instinctively.

"You should sleep."

Haley nodded sleepily.

"Only if you stop spiraling."

"I'll try."

"Promise."

Alex closed her eyes briefly.

"…Promise."

Lie.

Haley smiled faintly afterward and drifted back asleep within minutes.

Leaving Alex alone again with the unbearable contradiction underneath everything:

the person she was betraying most was also the person still loving her most gently.
