Chapter 229: Returning Home
The drive back felt quieter than usual.
Not because Alex had fewer thoughts.
Because she had too many.
The plan.
Haley.
The future they were trying to build carefully enough not to destroy the people they loved.
And underneath all of it—
the terrifying warmth still lingering in her chest every time she thought about him looking at her and saying:
We can't fail Haley.
Not you.
Not I.
We.
By the time she pulled into the driveway, the house was mostly dark.
11:18 PM.
Alex sat in the car for a few extra seconds staring at the upstairs bedroom window she shared with Haley.
Then she whispered softly to herself:
"Act normal."
Impossible instruction.
Still—
she tried.
Inside, the house carried that familiar late-night quiet:
air conditioning humming softly,
distant television noise from downstairs.
Phil.
Of course.
Alex stepped into the living room carefully and found him half-asleep in the recliner with a nature documentary still playing.
He blinked awake immediately.
"There she is."
Alex smiled faintly.
"You're still conscious?"
"Barely." Phil pointed sleepily at the TV. "Did you know octopuses can recognize human faces?"
"That feels threatening somehow."
Phil laughed softly.
Then his expression gentled slightly as he looked at her more carefully.
"You okay, kiddo?"
The question hit differently now.
Because suddenly Alex realized she'd started carrying this enormous hidden life while still existing inside ordinary family moments.
Then she nodded lightly.
"Yeah."
Not fully a lie anymore.
Phil smiled warmly.
"Good." He stretched tiredly. "Haley waited up for you for a while."
Alex's chest tightened instantly.
"She did?"
Phil nodded.
"She seemed worried." A small pause. "You've both been glued together lately."
The observation landed heavily.
Because Haley truly had started emotionally depending on her more after the fallout.
Then Phil yawned dramatically and stood.
"Well." He kissed the top of Alex's head automatically on the way toward the stairs. "Try not to become nocturnal."
"No promises."
And just like that, he disappeared upstairs completely unaware of how fragile the family beneath him had become.
Then Alex stood alone in the dark living room for a moment before finally heading upstairs herself.
Carefully, she opened the bedroom door.
Soft darkness.
String lights still glowing faintly.
Haley was awake.
Curled beneath blankets scrolling slowly through her phone.
The second she saw Alex, her expression relaxed visibly.
"There you are."
Again those three words.
Again they hurt.
Alex set her bag down quietly.
"You're awake."
"Couldn't sleep."
Haley shifted slightly, making room automatically on the bed beside her.
Alex changed into sleep clothes mechanically before climbing onto the bed beside her sister.
Then Haley rested her head lightly against Alex's shoulder without even thinking about it.
Safe.
Familiar.
And Alex felt the secret settle heavier inside her chest again.
Then Haley spoke quietly into the darkness.
"You smell different."
Panic flashed instantly through Alex.
"What?"
Haley frowned faintly.
"Like…" She leaned slightly closer sleepily. "Different cologne maybe?"
God.
Alex forced herself not to freeze.
"Oh." She exhaled carefully. "I hugged someone goodbye."
Technically true.
Haley accepted it immediately.
"Okay."
Trust.
Again.
Then after a few quiet seconds, Haley whispered softly:
"I'm glad you're here."
And lying there beside her sister while still carrying the warmth of another life hidden beneath her skin—
Alex realized this balancing act was going to become harder every single day.
