Chapter 221: Rationalizing the Damage
That night, Alex lay awake beside Haley again staring into the darkness while her thoughts spiraled endlessly.
Haley had fallen asleep quickly this time.
One arm stretched across the space between their beds unconsciously like always.
Familiar.
Safe.
Trusting.
Alex stared at it for a long time.
Because every day made the emotional contradiction harder to survive:
the happiness she felt with him,
and the devastation it would cause Haley if revealed now.
Then slowly, painfully—
Alex began constructing the only path that felt remotely survivable.
Not honest.
Not clean.
But survivable.
If Haley and Gael found their way back to each other first…
if Haley eventually accepted Claire and Gloria emotionally…
if the impossible future Gael wanted actually started becoming real…
Then maybe—
maybe—
Alex's truth would hurt less.
Not because it wouldn't still be betrayal.
Because it wouldn't feel like theft.
The distinction mattered deeply to her.
Then she whispered quietly into the darkness:
"This is manipulation."
The word sat heavily in the room.
Because she understood exactly what she was doing:
delaying truth strategically to preserve emotional outcomes.
Alex hated manipulation instinctively.
And yet here she was rationalizing it anyway.
Then Haley shifted sleepily nearby.
Alex immediately went silent again.
The guilt pressed harder.
Because Haley trusted her enough to sleep peacefully beside her while Alex mentally planned how to reveal loving the same man someday in the least destructive way possible.
Then Alex closed her eyes tightly.
God.
This was betrayal.
No amount of intellectual reframing changed that.
But another truth remained equally unavoidable:
telling Haley now would destroy her.
Not eventually.
Immediately.
Then Alex imagined it:
Haley learning about the elevator,
the kisses,
the attachment already forming.
No.
She physically recoiled from the thought.
Haley would feel surrounded.
Replaced.
Unsafe everywhere.
And Alex couldn't do that to her.
Then slowly her thoughts settled into a painful kind of resolve.
She would wait.
Wait until:
Haley healed enough emotionally,
Haley and Gael rebuilt trust,
Claire and Gloria stopped being sources of active pain,
the family stabilized.
Then Alex would tell her the truth herself.
No lies once it mattered.
No hiding forever.
And when that day came—
she would ask Haley directly for permission to be with him.
The thought sounded insane even inside her own head.
But emotionally, it mattered.
Because Alex didn't want to take him from Haley.
She wanted a future where Haley still chose him too.
Then she laughed softly once under her breath.
Broken sound.
"This family has completely destroyed my understanding of normal."
Then quietly, almost like confession:
"I'm already in love with him."
Saying it aloud in the dark made it feel terrifyingly real.
Not infatuation anymore.
Not emotional dependency alone.
Love.
Then beside her, Haley murmured sleepily without waking fully:
"…Alex?"
Her heart jumped violently.
"Yeah?"
Haley shifted closer toward her voice instinctively.
"Don't stay up all night thinking."
The tenderness in the sleepy concern nearly shattered her completely.
Then Haley added softly:
"You always get sad when you overthink."
Alex stared into the darkness with tears suddenly burning behind her eyes.
Because Haley still understood her better than almost anyone in the world.
And Alex was about to spend the foreseeable future hiding the one truth that would hurt her most.
