Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 220: Emotionally Attached

By the time Alex got home that evening, she already knew something had changed permanently inside her.

Not because of the kisses.

Not because of the secrecy.

Because of the message:

if this is hurting you too much we slow down

That should've made leaving easier.

Instead it proved he cared about her safety enough to let her go if necessary.

And somehow that deepened the attachment instead of weakening it.

Psychological nightmare.

Then she walked into the house and immediately heard laughter from the kitchen.

Haley.

Warm,

real laughter.

Alex froze briefly in the hallway before stepping inside.

Phil stood proudly beside a disaster-level attempt at homemade tacos while Haley leaned against the counter laughing hard enough to wipe tears from her eyes.

Claire sat nearby watching Haley with visible relief.

The second Alex entered, Haley pointed immediately.

"Tell Dad he cannot legally call this Mexican food."

Phil looked offended.

"These tacos contain authenticity."

"They contain raisins."

"That's innovation."

Normal family chaos.

And suddenly Alex felt emotionally split in half again.

Because this—

this warmth,

this family,

Haley laughing—

was real too.

Then Haley looked toward her and smiled automatically.

"There you are."

Three simple words.

Still enough to tighten Alex's chest painfully.

Then Haley held out a plate toward her.

"Eat before Dad commits another cultural crime."

Alex accepted it mechanically and sat beside her sister.

Too aware suddenly of every small thing:

their shoulders brushing,

Haley leaning toward her naturally while talking,

years of unconscious closeness now contaminated by hidden truth.

Then Haley lowered her voice conspiratorially.

"Dad used cinnamon."

Phil defended himself instantly.

"Great chefs take risks!"

Luke wandered into the kitchen at exactly the wrong moment, took one bite, and physically stopped walking.

"…This tastes haunted."

Haley burst into laughter again.

And watching her happy should've made Alex feel relieved.

Instead it made the guilt sharper.

Because Haley still trusted her enough to be unguarded around her.

Then Claire's eyes briefly met Alex's across the kitchen.

Instant understanding passed silently between them again.

Haley noticed neither because she remained focused on mocking Phil's tacos with Luke.

Then quietly beside Alex:

"You seem less stressed today."

The observation startled her.

"What?"

Haley shrugged lightly.

"I don't know." A faint smile touched her mouth. "You've been less intense since yesterday."

Alex's pulse stumbled hard.

Because the terrifying part?

Haley was right.

Despite the guilt,

despite the fear—

being with him made her happier.

More grounded.

More emotionally open.

And Haley noticed the difference instinctively without understanding why.

Then Haley smiled softly at her.

"Good. I missed you a little."

That almost physically hurt.

Because suddenly Alex realized:

Haley wasn't just afraid of losing Gael anymore.

She was afraid of losing people.

And unknowingly—

Alex had already started slipping somewhere Haley couldn't follow.
