Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 217: Beside Haley

Alex stood outside the bedroom door for almost a full minute before going in.

Not because she was afraid Haley was awake.

Because she was afraid she wasn't.

Afraid of the quiet intimacy of the room they'd shared for years:

half-finished conversations,

inside jokes,

late-night confessions whispered in the dark.

Now Alex carried something inside that space Haley could never imagine.

The guilt felt suffocating.

Then she finally opened the door carefully.

Soft darkness.

String lights.

Haley asleep beneath tangled blankets with one arm stretched across Alex's side of the bed unconsciously like always.

That nearly broke her immediately.

Because even asleep, Haley still reached for her.

Alex stood frozen in the doorway staring at her sister.

Then Haley shifted slightly and murmured sleepily:

"…Alex?"

Not fully awake.

Instinctive.

Alex crossed the room quickly.

"Yeah."

Haley blinked tiredly against the darkness.

"You okay?"

The concern in her voice hit like emotional violence.

Because Haley still asked if she was okay.

Alex sat carefully on the edge of the bed.

"Yeah. Sorry. I woke you up."

Haley made a sleepy dismissive sound and shifted closer automatically.

"Thought you were spiraling again."

That almost made Alex laugh.

Almost made her cry too.

Then Haley rubbed tiredly at one eye and looked at her more carefully through the darkness.

"You've been weird lately."

Direct hit.

Alex's pulse tightened instantly.

"Everyone's been weird lately."

"True."

Haley accepted that more easily than Alex deserved.

Then quieter:

"Did you see him tonight?"

Again.

Every conversation somehow circled back to him now.

Alex forced herself to stay calm.

"Yeah."

Haley looked down at the blankets for a second.

Then softly:

"Does he still ask about me?"

The vulnerability in the question hurt so badly Alex physically looked away.

Because yes.

Constantly.

Then she answered honestly enough to survive the guilt.

"Yes."

Haley nodded faintly afterward.

And suddenly she looked heartbreakingly young again beneath all the forced maturity she'd developed lately.

Then she whispered:

"I hate that I still want him."

Alex's chest tightened violently.

Because now she carried two unbearable truths simultaneously:

Haley still loved him deeply.

And so did she.

Then Haley leaned lightly against her shoulder sleepily.

Instinct.

Trust.

Years of sisterhood.

Alex froze for half a second before slowly relaxing into it.

Because refusing affection would hurt Haley more.

And that realization shattered her all over again.

Then Haley murmured quietly:

"You're the only person I don't feel complicated around right now."

The sentence almost destroyed Alex completely.

She stared into the darkness while guilt crashed through her chest so hard it became difficult to breathe normally.

Because that wasn't true anymore.

Now even Alex had become emotionally dangerous.

Then Haley yawned softly and closed her eyes again.

"Don't disappear too, okay?"

The plea came out barely above a whisper.

Still devastating.

Alex wrapped one arm carefully around her sister.

And for the first time since the elevator—

she genuinely wondered whether choosing him might eventually cost her the person she loved most in the world.
