Chapter 216: Shared Room
The conversation ended only when the clock crept past two in the morning.
Reality eventually forced itself back in:
sleep,
morning,
normality.
Or whatever passed for normal now.
Alex stood slowly from the bed, exhaustion finally settling visibly into her posture.
Claire looked toward the hallway automatically.
"You okay?"
Alex laughed softly once under her breath.
"No." A small pause. "But I do have class tomorrow, so society unfortunately expects productivity."
That sounded enough like old Alex to hurt a little.
Then she hesitated a bit.
Because suddenly another reality hit both of them at once:
Haley.
The room she moved back to not feel lonely, to live in the same room with the person she most trusted now.
Shared space.
Shared lives.
Shared intimacy now poisoned by secrets.
Alex physically rubbed at her forehead.
"Oh my God."
Claire's chest tightened immediately.
"What?"
"I forgot for like the last few minutes that I literally sleep six feet away from the girl who still loves him."
The guilt crashed back down instantly.
Not abstract guilt.
Practical guilt.
Because tomorrow morning Alex would wake up beside Haley like always:
shared jokes,
shared clothes on the floor,
late-night conversations.
Except now Alex carried something devastatingly new underneath all of it.
Then quieter:
"She tells me everything before she sleeps sometimes."
The sentence landed heavily.
Claire looked down briefly.
Because Haley had always trusted Alex most naturally.
No performance.
No judgment.
Then Alex whispered:
"And now every conversation feels dangerous."
Not because she planned to manipulate Haley.
Because she hated hiding from her already.
Then Claire stood slowly and crossed toward her daughter again.
"You don't have to carry this alone."
Alex looked up immediately.
The irony in that sentence hit both of them at the same time.
Then Alex laughed weakly.
"This family really said 'healthy boundaries' and took it as a personal challenge."
But the humor faded quickly.
Then quieter:
"You know what I'm scared of?"
"What?"
"That I'll start distancing from Haley to protect the secret." Her voice tightened slightly. "And she'll think I'm abandoning her too."
That possibility hit Claire hard immediately.
Because Haley already felt instability everywhere around her.
Losing Alex's closeness too would devastate her.
Then Claire whispered:
"You can't let that happen."
"I know."
Immediate answer.
Then Alex looked toward the staircase again.
"I love her."
Simple truth.
Because despite everything—
Haley wasn't an obstacle emotionally.
She was family.
Safety.
History.
Then Alex exhaled slowly.
"And somehow I also love him."
The confession sounded quieter now.
More frightening.
Because it had settled deeper.
Then Claire asked carefully:
"Do you think she suspects anything?"
Alex shook her head immediately.
"No." A small pause. "But Haley notices changes instinctively." Her eyes lowered briefly. "And I'm already acting different."
That was the real danger.
Not evidence.
Energy.
Then Claire spoke softly:
"You have to stay grounded around her."
Alex nodded slowly.
"I know." She swallowed once. "Which is hard when I'm suddenly thinking about him every five minutes like a hormonally compromised idiot."
That actually made Claire smile faintly despite everything.
Then Alex groaned softly.
"See? This is exactly why smart people shouldn't fall in love."
The word slipped out naturally.
Love.
Both women noticed immediately.
Alex froze for half a second afterward.
Then:
"Cool. Awesome. We're using terrifying vocabulary casually now."
Claire looked at her daughter carefully.
And instead of panic—
she felt recognition again.
Because Alex had crossed the same invisible threshold she once did:
the moment feelings stopped feeling temporary.
