Chapter 204: The Weakest Point
Claire opened her mouth to answer.
Nothing came out.
Because standing there in the office with him looking at her that way—
steady,
certain,
unafraid—
she felt the last month of emotional exhaustion cracking through her defenses all at once.
Then Gael crossed the remaining distance between them.
No hesitation.
This time he didn't let conversations become endless emotional spirals.
Didn't retreat behind restraint and guilt the way he had before.
Claire saw the intention in his eyes immediately.
And still—
she didn't step away.
That was the truth she hated most.
Then he kissed her.
Deeply.
Completely.
The force of it hit Claire like an emotional collapse made physical.
One second she was trying to be rational—
the next her hands were gripping the back of his shirt instinctively while weeks of repression shattered apart inside her chest.
God.
She missed this.
Missed him.
The realization flooded through her so violently it almost hurt.
Then the kiss softened slightly but didn't break, his hand sliding carefully along her waist while Claire melted against him before she could stop herself.
Not because she forgot Haley.
Because she remembered everything and still wanted him anyway.
That was the unbearable part.
Then finally they separated just enough to breathe.
Claire stared at him in shock at herself more than him.
Her lips still tingled.
Her heartbeat felt out of control.
And suddenly the office—the desk, the windows, the entire normal world around them—felt impossibly distant.
Then she whispered shakily:
"You cannot do that to me right now."
But there was no real anger in it.
Only devastation.
Gael looked directly into her eyes.
"Yes I can."
The certainty in his voice hit her hard again.
Because for months their entire relationship existed inside hesitation:
almost-confessions,
almost-touching,
almost-crossing lines.
Not anymore.
Then his forehead rested lightly against hers.
"I'm done acting like loving you is something I should be ashamed of."
Claire physically closed her eyes after hearing that.
Because part of her had been drowning in shame for so long that hearing someone reject it so completely felt emotionally overwhelming.
Then she whispered:
"You're making this impossible."
"No." His voice stayed calm. "I'm making it honest."
That sentence settled deep inside her.
Because honesty was exactly what terrified her now.
Then Claire pulled back slightly, breathing uneven.
"Haley still wants you back."
The words came out almost like a plea.
A reminder.
A reality check.
Gael's expression softened immediately at Haley's name.
Claire noticed that too.
And somehow it hurt and relieved her simultaneously.
Then he answered quietly:
"I know."
No dismissal.
No cruelty.
Still love.
Claire saw it clearly.
Then she whispered:
"And you still love her."
"Yes."
The immediate honesty shook her again.
Because there was no pretending anymore.
No narrowing emotions down into something simpler for comfort.
Then Gael looked at her steadily.
"I love you too."
The office suddenly felt too small for the emotional weight of the sentence.
And Claire realized with terrifying clarity that the most terrifying thing about him was never seduction.
It was the way he made impossible feelings sound survivable.
