Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 203: Cracks in Control

Claire lasted exactly eleven minutes at work before realizing she couldn't focus on anything.

Numbers blurred.

Emails sat unanswered.

Every thought circled back endlessly to the same unbearable truths:

Haley still loved him.

Alex knew.

And somehow the entire family was pretending functionality around a slowly widening fracture.

Then her phone buzzed.

Alex.

Claire's chest tightened instantly before opening the message.

alex: she still wants him back

That single sentence destabilized Claire immediately.

Because part of her had known already.

Still—

seeing it written so plainly hurt.

Then another message appeared seconds later.

alex: and somehow she's still protecting everyone

Claire physically closed her eyes at her desk.

God.

Then finally:

alex: i don't know how to survive this situation without becoming part of it

Claire stared at that message for a long time.

Something about the wording unsettled her instinctively.

Not enough to understand fully.

Not yet.

But enough to feel uneasy.

Then her office door opened suddenly.

Gael stepped inside.

And immediately Claire's entire nervous system reacted before logic could catch up:

relief,

longing,

guilt.

The same devastating combination as always.

Then she saw his expression.

Different.

Calmer somehow.

More resolved.

That alone frightened her slightly.

Claire stood too quickly from behind her desk.

"You shouldn't be here."

True statement.

Weak statement.

Gael closed the office door quietly behind him.

"We need to talk."

Claire's pulse tightened immediately.

Because significant conversations with him had a catastrophic history.

Then she folded her arms tightly.

"What happened?"

For one brief second, Gael considered telling her everything.

Alex.

The elevator.

The kiss.

Instead he looked at her carefully and answered with a different truth.

"I'm done waiting for everybody else to decide what happens to us."

The sentence hit Claire hard enough to physically still her.

Because underneath the guilt,

underneath the shame—

part of her had been desperately wanting to hear that for months.

Then she whispered:

"Gael…"

"I love you."

Immediate.

Direct.

Claire closed her eyes briefly like the force of hearing it aloud hurt.

Because this wasn't emotional ambiguity anymore.

Then quieter:

"And I'm done pretending I don't."

The certainty in his voice shook her deeply.

Because unlike before—

there was no hesitation left in him now.

No passive emotional drifting.

Choice.

Then Claire looked away toward the office windows.

"You can't say things like that now."

"Why?"

Claire almost laughed at the impossibility of the question.

"Because Haley is devastated." Her voice cracked slightly. "Because my family is barely surviving this already."

Gael stepped closer slowly.

"And because you still love me too."

That landed with devastating precision.

Claire physically wrapped her arms tighter around herself afterward.

Because yes.

That was the real problem.

Not temptation anymore.

Truth.
