Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 195: The Choice

The elevator moved slowly downward.

Floor numbers glowing one after another above the doors while silence pressed heavily between them.

Alex still stood against the wall breathing unevenly, trying to process the emotional magnitude of what just happened.

Then Gael spoke quietly.

"I still love Haley."

The sentence hit immediately.

Alex's eyes lifted toward him sharply.

No hesitation.

No softening.

Just truth.

Then he continued:

"I still love Claire."

Another hit.

"And Gloria."

The elevator suddenly felt airless.

Because Alex realized instantly what he was doing:

not seducing,

not narrowing reality down to her.

The opposite.

He was showing her the full truth before she chose anything.

Then Gael looked directly at her.

"And I'm done pretending I don't want all of them."

The honesty in the confession felt almost brutal.

Alex stared at him in stunned silence.

Then quieter:

"I want Haley back." His voice lowered further. "I want Claire. I want Gloria." A small pause. "And I want you."

No shame now.

No restraint.

No emotional half-measures.

Just impossible honesty.

Then he continued:

"Not hidden. Not halfway." His eyes never left hers. "I want them as mine. Openly. Completely."

Alex physically stopped breathing for a second.

Because suddenly the architecture of everything changed.

This wasn't:

confusion,

accidental overlap,

drifting emotion anymore.

This was intention.

Choice.

Desire without apology.

Then Gael spoke the part that mattered most.

"And from now on…" His voice stayed calm, terrifyingly certain. "I'm going to fight for them instead of holding myself back like before."

Claire.

Gloria.

Haley.

And now her too.

Alex stared at him like she no longer recognized the boundaries of reality.

Because part of her expected guilt.

Expected retreat after the kiss.

Instead he stood there emotionally unwavering in a way she had never experienced before.

Then she whispered shakily:

"You're serious."

"Yes."

And suddenly Alex understood something terrifying:

he wasn't offering fantasy.

He was offering chaos with full awareness of the cost.

Then the elevator slowed.

The lobby approaching.

Gael looked toward the doors briefly before returning his eyes to hers.

"So now you choose."

The sentence settled heavily into the space between them.

"When those doors open…" His voice softened slightly. "If you walk out, we pretend tonight never happened."

Alex's pulse hammered harder.

Then quieter:

"I won't chase you. I won't pull you back into this."

The elevator slowed further.

Almost there.

Then his final words:

"But if you stay…"

Alex's breath caught.

"…then stay knowing exactly who I am."

No manipulation.

No promises of exclusivity.

No emotional simplification.

Just truth.

The doors began sliding open slowly onto the quiet lobby beyond.

And for one suspended moment—

Alex stood perfectly still between escape and surrender.
