Chapter 194: No Returning to Before
The elevator still hadn't moved.
Somewhere above them, the penthouse existed in suspended silence.
Somewhere below, the rest of Los Angeles continued normally.
Inside the elevator, Alex felt like reality itself had tilted sideways.
She stared at him trying to regain enough cognitive function to think clearly again.
It wasn't working.
Because the problem wasn't just the kiss anymore.
It was certainty.
Gael wasn't conflicted now.
Wasn't emotionally drifting by accident.
He chose this.
Chose her.
And that realization hit Alex with terrifying force.
Then she laughed softly once.
Not amusement.
Shock.
"This is actually happening."
The words sounded fragile coming from her.
Gael's hand still rested lightly against her waist.
Warm.
Steady.
Alex became painfully aware of it all at once.
Then she whispered:
"You were supposed to let me leave."
"I know."
"You were supposed to hesitate."
This time his answer came immediately.
"I already made that mistake before."
Claire.
Gloria.
Both of them built on restraint,
ambiguity,
slow emotional collapse.
Not this time.
And Alex understood that instantly.
Then her expression shifted slightly.
Something vulnerable.
Almost hurt.
"You fought harder for me."
The realization entered the elevator quietly.
Not accusation.
Not triumph.
Recognition.
Because subconsciously, Alex had already noticed the difference:
no emotional distancing,
no pretending this was temporary,
no passive surrender to circumstances.
Gael chose her actively.
Then he spoke softly:
"You saw me at my worst and stayed anyway."
That sentence nearly cracked her open emotionally.
Because Alex spent most of her life assuming people loved her conditionally:
for achievement,
competence,
usefulness.
Not because her presence itself mattered emotionally.
Then his hand moved gently upward against her back.
"And you understood me before I even knew how to explain what was happening."
Alex physically closed her eyes briefly.
God.
That was exactly the thing she always secretly wanted someone to say.
Then she laughed weakly.
"This is such a disaster."
But the protest lacked conviction now.
Because beneath the guilt,
beneath the horror—
she felt happy.
Terrifyingly happy.
Then Alex leaned back lightly against the elevator wall and stared at the ceiling.
"I'm supposed to be the rational one."
"You are rational."
"No." She shook her head faintly. "Rational people don't kiss the same man their sister cried over."
The sentence crashed reality back into the moment immediately.
Haley.
The guilt hit both of them again hard enough to physically change the atmosphere.
Alex noticed it instantly.
Of course she did.
Then quieter:
"She trusted me the most after everything happened."
The pain in her voice sharpened.
Because unlike Claire or Gloria—
Alex had become Haley's emotional safe place after the collapse.
And now even that was contaminated.
Then Alex looked back toward him carefully.
"You realize this can never become public."
The sentence entered the elevator heavily.
Not temporary secrecy.
Never.
Because this crossed a line even deeper than before:
mother,
sister,
then another sister.
The emotional fallout would become nuclear.
Then she swallowed once.
"And if Haley ever found out…" Her voice cracked slightly. "I think it would destroy her."
Silence.
Because both knew she was probably right.
Then Alex laughed softly once under her breath again.
Broken sound.
"You know what's insane?" She looked directly into his eyes now. "Part of me still doesn't want this to stop."
There it was.
The final honesty.
Not confusion anymore.
Choice.
Then the elevator suddenly jolted softly back to life beneath them.
Neither moved.
Because both understood now:
once those doors opened,
everything would become complicated again.
