Chapter 180: Distance From Him
That night, Gloria sat alone on the backyard patio long after Jay went to bed.
The house had gone quiet around her:
pool lights glowing softly,
distant traffic beyond the gates,
warm California air pressing against the silence.
Usually she loved nights like this.
Now they just felt empty.
Her phone sat face-down on the table beside her.
She hadn't called him in three days.
Longest stretch since all of this began.
And somehow the absence hurt.
That realization made her feel sick.
Because Alex's words kept replaying in her head:
You both need to stop seeing him.
Then her phone buzzed suddenly.
Gloria's chest tightened instantly before she even looked.
Gael.
For one terrible second, relief flooded through her automatically.
That alone felt like betrayal now.
She stared at the screen while it continued vibrating softly against the table.
No message.
Just his name.
The instinct to answer hit immediately:
comfort,
understanding,
the version of herself that felt most alive around him.
And for the first time—
Gloria consciously fought it.
Not because she stopped loving him.
Because she finally understood what continuing would cost.
The phone stopped ringing.
Silence returned.
Gloria closed her eyes afterward like resisting the call required actual force.
Then a message appeared seconds later:
I just wanted to know if you were okay.
The restraint in it hurt more than pressure would have.
No manipulation.
No pleading.
Just concern.
And that was the problem.
Everything between them had always felt sincere.
Then another message:
You don't have to answer.
Gloria laughed softly once under her breath.
Broken sound.
Because he knew her too well now.
Knew she'd feel guilty even reading it.
Then she picked up the phone slowly.
Typed:
I'm alive.
Stopped.
Deleted it.
Typed again:
Haley spoke to me.
Deleted that too.
Finally she locked the screen entirely and set the phone facedown again.
Not answering felt like grief.
And suddenly Gloria understood something terrifying:
she wasn't just trying to walk away from a person.
She was trying to walk away from an life she had already started building internally.
Then behind her, the patio door slid open softly.
Gloria wiped quickly at her eyes before turning.
Jay stepped outside wearing sweatpants and concern.
"There you are."
Her stomach tightened instantly.
Jay crossed toward her slowly.
"You disappeared."
"I wanted air."
Jay studied her face carefully under the patio lights.
"You've been disappearing a lot lately."
Then Jay sat beside her.
Not confrontational.
Just close.
"I know Haley's situation upset you." He rested one arm along the back of the chair behind her. "But you can talk to me, you know."
The trust in his voice felt unbearable.
Because Jay still believed he was standing outside the problem instead of inside its blast radius.
Then softer:
"You don't have to carry everything alone."
And suddenly Gloria almost broke.
Because that was exactly what Gael used to say to her too.
