Chapter 179: Quiet Damage
Across town, Gloria stood in her kitchen pretending to cook while Jay explained golf politics from the dining table.
Normally she would've interrupted him constantly:
teasing,
arguing,
dramatically disagreeing with everything.
Tonight she barely heard him.
Her mind stayed trapped inside Haley's voice from the phone call:
I still want my mom and you when I'm upset.
That sentence hadn't stopped hurting since.
Then Jay looked up mid-story.
"…Are you listening to me?"
Gloria blinked immediately.
"Yes."
"You said yes too fast."
Gloria forced herself to smile lightly and turned back toward the stove.
"You are talking about golf, Jay. There are limits to human focus."
Normally that would've pulled a bigger reaction from her.
Tonight it barely landed.
Jay noticed.
Not suspicion.
Concern.
Then softer:
"Hey."
Gloria looked toward him.
"You okay?"
The gentleness in the question was hurtful.
Because Jay loved her so openly.
So steadily.
And she understood how much emotional distance had already entered their marriage without him fully realizing why.
Then Manny walked into the kitchen carrying one of his poetry books and immediately paused.
Because Manny knew his mother's emotional rhythms instinctively.
"Why does this feel like a Korean drama?"
Jay pointed immediately.
"THANK you."
Gloria laughed weakly despite herself.
Too weakly.
Manny noticed.
Then he crossed toward the fridge slowly while studying her more carefully.
"You've been sad all week."
Gloria focused hard on the food in front of her.
"I'm tired."
Manny leaned lightly against the counter.
"You become louder when you're tired." Small pause. "You become quieter when you're hurt."
That landed dangerously close.
Jay looked between them now, attention sharpening slightly.
Gloria noticed immediately.
And for the first time since Haley found out, real panic hit her.
Not because she feared exposure for herself.
Because she could not emotionally survive Manny knowing.
Then she turned dramatically toward him before silence became suspicious.
"Oh please." She waved one hand dismissively. "You think every emotional mood in this house is a Shakespeare drama."
Good recovery.
Familiar rhythm.
Manny narrowed his eyes slightly.
Still unconvinced.
Then Jay stood from the table.
"She probably just misses Haley." He shrugged. "That girl practically lived here half the time."
Because Haley had.
Movie nights.
Kitchen talks.
Career advice.
Late-night conversations. Escape from parents.
All contaminated now by hidden truth underneath them.
Then Manny softened instantly.
"Oh." His expression changed with immediate empathy. "Did something happen with Haley?"
Gloria's chest tightened violently.
Jay looked toward her again.
And suddenly she understood:
one wrong reaction,
one crack too deep,
and everything would begin unraveling here too.
So Gloria forced herself to breathe normally.
"She's having relationship problems."
Manny immediately looked heartbroken for Haley.
"Oh no."
Jay sighed softly.
"Young love."
If only it were that simple.
Then Manny crossed the kitchen and hugged Gloria from the side automatically.
She understood the full scope of what she risked losing:
Jay,
Manny,
the family she built,
the trust surrounding her life.
All for feelings she never meant to let grow this far.
Then Manny smiled gently at her.
"She'll come back around." Soft voice. "Haley loves you too much not to."
