Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 172 172: Performing Normal

By evening, the house had become an exercise in emotional choreography.

Phil remained unaware.

Which meant everyone else had unconsciously started orbiting around protecting that ignorance.

Claire hated how naturally they adapted to it.

Haley still hadn't come home.

Alex answered questions carefully.

Luke sensed tension but not specifics.

And Phil—

Phil just kept trying to fix things without understanding what was actually broken.

At dinner, he made pasta and called it:

"comfort carbohydrates."

Normally Haley would've mocked him for ten straight minutes.

Her empty chair sat like a wound in the middle of the table instead.

Phil noticed it constantly.

"Should we bring her food later?" he asked softly.

Alex answered before Claire could.

"She said she's okay."

Phil nodded slowly, though concern remained written all over his face.

Then he looked toward Claire again.

"You sure you two didn't have some huge fight?"

Claire forced herself to keep eating.

"Just space stuff."

The vagueness bothered him immediately.

"What does that mean?"

Alex stepped in again smoothly.

"It means Haley's overloaded and Mom's trying not to smother her."

Good.

Plausible.

Phil relaxed slightly.

"That actually sounds realistic."

Claire hated herself for feeling relieved.

Then Luke looked around the table awkwardly.

"This is the quietest dinner we've had since grandma thought the dog died."

"The dog was missing," Phil defended.

"He was asleep in the laundry room."

Still.

Luke wasn't wrong.

The house felt hollow without Haley's energy filling it.

Then Phil sighed softly and looked toward Claire again.

"You know she always comes back around with you."

The trust nearly shattered her composure.

Because Phil believed this was temporary.

Repairable.

Normal.

He had no idea the emotional foundation underneath the family had cracked.

Then Alex stood suddenly with her plate.

"I have scholarship essays."

Classic escape.

Phil pointed his fork at her.

"You've become unavailable since applying to Stanford."

"I inherited that genetically."

Claire froze for half a second.

Alex noticed immediately.

So did Phil, but he interpreted it completely differently.

"Oof," he muttered. "Teenagers are brutal."

Alex immediately looked guilty afterward.

Not because of the joke.

Because she accidentally hit too close to the truth.

Then she softened slightly and squeezed Claire's shoulder while passing behind her.

Tiny gesture.

Still meaningful.

Because despite everything, Alex was trying to help hold the family together now too.

After dinner, Claire found herself alone in the kitchen rinsing dishes while Phil wandered nearby reorganizing mail badly.

Then he spoke quietly without looking up.

"She's really hurt."

Claire's hands stopped moving briefly in the sink water.

"I know."

Phil glanced toward her finally.

"You know what worries me?"

Everything.

Literally everything.

But Claire forced herself to answer calmly.

"What?"

Phil leaned lightly against the counter.

"That she's shutting you out." His expression softened. "That only happens when something really gets to her."

Haley adored her mother.

Even now.

That's what made the distance feel catastrophic.

Then Phil crossed toward her and rested one hand lightly against her back.

"You're a good mom, Claire."

Suddenly she understood the full horror of the situation:

the people she loved most still believed the best about her.

And she no longer knew if they should.
