Chapter 157: Collapse
Haley cried quietly at first.
Not dramatic sobbing.
Not yelling.
Which somehow made it infinitely worse.
She stood near the kitchen island with tears running silently down her face while trying desperately to stay emotionally composed through sheer force of will.
And watching that nearly broke something inside him completely.
Because this wasn't heartbreak caused by cruelty alone.
It was heartbreak caused by trust collapsing in real time.
Haley wiped hard at her eyes once and laughed shakily under her breath.
"You know what's pathetic?"
The question came without waiting for an answer.
"I understand why they fell for you."
That sentence destroyed whatever emotional distance remained.
Because even now—
in the middle of betrayal—
Haley's instinct was still empathy.
Then her voice cracked again.
"I hate that."
She pressed both hands briefly against her face before taking a shaky breath.
"I hate that part of me still gets it."
The penthouse lights reflected softly across the windows around them while the city glittered outside completely indifferent to the emotional disaster unfolding inside.
Then Haley looked up again.
This time anger mixed clearly with grief.
"Did you love me at all?"
The question landed brutally.
Because suddenly everything rested there.
Not the affair.
Not the emotional entanglement.
The authenticity of what they had.
Gael answered immediately.
"Yes."
No hesitation.
No ambiguity.
Haley stared at him through tears for several seconds after that.
Then:
"That almost makes it worse."
Because if he never loved her, then she could dismiss the relationship as manipulation.
But he did love her.
Which meant this entire tragedy grew out of real emotions colliding disastrously instead of fake ones.
Then Haley laughed weakly again.
"Oh my God." She shook her head slightly. "Alex is going to become unbearable when she finds out she was right about emotional complexity."
The attempt at humor cracked halfway through.
She looked exhausted suddenly.
Older.
Then quieter:
"Did you ever love me enough for this not to happen?"
That question hurt because it had no clean answer.
Love wasn't the issue anymore.
Boundaries were.
Loneliness was.
Need was.
Emotional dependency spreading too far through one interconnected family.
But none of those truths made the pain smaller.
Haley looked at him carefully now.
And for the first time all night, fear shifted into something else:
mourning.
Not just for the relationship.
For the version of her life she thought was safe.
Then she whispered:
"I built my future around you."
The honesty in the sentence felt catastrophic.
Because she had.
The house,
the city,
career confidence,
adult identity—
all emotionally tied to him now.
And suddenly Haley understood she couldn't separate the betrayal cleanly from the happiness either.
That was the cruelest part.
Then she stepped backward slowly toward the couch and sat down hard like her legs no longer fully supported her emotionally.
For a long moment she just stared ahead silently.
Thinking.
Finally:
"Does Mom love you?"
Not:
is she attracted to you.
Not:
do you flirt.
Love.
Gael hesitated.
Tiny hesitation.
Still enough.
Haley closed her eyes immediately afterward.
And this time the heartbreak in her expression looked almost unbearable to witness.
