Chapter 156: Full Truth
The silence after that felt unbearable.
Haley stayed near the kitchen island with both hands braced against the counter while trying very hard to keep herself emotionally upright.
And suddenly Gael understood something clearly:
partial honesty would only become another betrayal now.
Haley deserved the truth.
Even if it destroyed everything.
He stepped closer slowly.
"There's something else you need to know."
The sentence alone made Haley close her eyes briefly.
Because part of her already sensed it coming.
When she looked back at him, fear had entered her expression fully now.
Not fear for herself anymore.
Fear of how big this had become.
Gael forced himself to continue.
"Your mother isn't the only reason things became complicated."
The room went still.
Haley stared at him for a second without understanding.
Then understanding arrived all at once.
Her face changed instantly.
Not subtle hurt this time.
Shock.
Real shock.
"…What?"
The word barely came out.
Gael looked down briefly before answering.
"Nothing physical happened."
Important truth.
Still not enough.
Haley took a step backward instinctively like the emotional impact physically hit her.
"No." She shook her head immediately. "No, don't do that."
Her voice cracked for the first time.
"Don't say 'nothing physical' like that's supposed to make this okay."
Fair.
Completely fair.
Haley stared at him now like she was trying to reconcile two incompatible realities at once.
Then slowly:
"Gloria?"
The disbelief in her voice hurt almost more than anger.
Gael nodded once.
And something inside Haley visibly broke.
She turned away immediately, pressing one hand hard against her mouth while trying to breathe through the emotional shock.
Because this changed everything.
Claire was painful.
Complicated.
Almost understandable emotionally.
But Gloria?
That destabilized the entire structure of the family.
Then Haley laughed once.
Sharp.
Disbelieving.
"Oh my God."
She looked back toward him with tears finally visible in her eyes now.
"My mom and Gloria?"
The emotional absurdity of it hit her all at once.
"This is insane."
Then anger finally entered her voice properly for the first time.
"Were you collecting emotionally damaged women in my family?"
The sentence landed brutally because beneath the anger lived real devastation.
Gael stepped forward slightly.
"Haley—"
"No." She backed away immediately again. "Don't say my name like everything's still normal."
That hurt because it was true.
Nothing about this was normal anymore.
Haley folded her arms tightly around herself like she suddenly didn't know where emotional safety existed anymore.
Then quieter:
"Does Grandpa know?"
"No."
Haley laughed again through tears.
"Cool." She nodded rapidly once. "Great. So I'm apparently the only person in this entire family who knows the world is about to explode."
The penthouse suddenly felt too small to contain the conversation.
Haley looked toward the skyline windows briefly like she needed distance from reality itself.
Then:
"Did Gloria love you too?"
Direct.
Shaking slightly now.
Gael answered honestly.
"She was starting to."
Haley physically looked away again.
Because hearing it confirmed aloud made the emotional betrayal real in a completely different way.
Then finally she whispered:
"She treated me like this relationship was good for me."
Both women encouraged Haley's happiness while emotionally drifting toward the same person behind her back.
The emotional cruelty of that realization hit all at once now.
And for the first time since the conversation began—
Haley started crying openly.
