Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 144 144: The Offer

Three days later, Claire got into a screaming match with a printer.

Not metaphorically.

Actually.

The Dunphy dining room looked like administrative warfare:

school forms,

insurance papers,

contractor invoices,

Phil's "garage renovation budget" printed in suspiciously colorful fonts.

Claire stood in the middle of it all holding a jammed printer cartridge like she was considering homicide.

"This machine is mocking me."

Alex barely looked up from her laptop.

"You threatened it three times already."

"Because it understands fear."

Then Phil wandered in carrying measuring tape and dangerous optimism.

"Good news. I found a way to expand the garage workspace."

Claire looked at him slowly.

"There is no workspace."

"There could be."

"There absolutely could not."

Phil blinked once before retreating instinctively.

Smart survival reflex.

A few minutes later Claire escaped through the backyard gate carrying her laptop, paperwork, and emotional exhaustion.

Again.

At this point even Alex barely reacted anymore.

"Tell Gael the Wi-Fi still hates me," she called without looking up.

Claire found him downstairs in the kitchen reviewing property reports on a tablet while coffee brewed nearby.

The calmness of the house hit immediately.

No shouting.

No clutter.

No garage expansion plans.

Peace.

Dangerous peace.

Claire dropped the paperwork onto the island dramatically.

"I want a divorce from office equipment."

Gael glanced at the pile.

"That looks expensive."

"It looks vindictive."

She moved automatically toward the coffee machine before stopping halfway.

"…I live here emotionally now."

The sentence slipped out before she could stop it.

Both of them noticed.

Claire laughed softly under her breath and rubbed one hand across her forehead.

"This is becoming a problem."

But neither of them stepped away.

Also a problem.

Then Gael looked down at the paperwork spread across the counter:

budgets,

schedules,

vendor contracts,

household planning lists.

Interesting.

"You organize all this yourself?"

Claire gave him a look.

"Have you met my family?"

Fair.

But as she started sorting papers again, Gael noticed something else:

everything was categorized,

color-coded,

scheduled.

Claire managed chaos professionally without ever calling it work.

That realization connected several things instantly.

"You're wasted doing this for free."

Claire looked up.

"What?"

He gestured lightly toward the paperwork.

"You basically run operations for six people already."

She laughed immediately.

"That is the least flattering job description of motherhood I've ever heard."

"I'm serious."

The tone made her pause.

Interesting.

Because most people in Claire's life treated her competence as expected.

Invisible.

Domestic.

Not valuable.

Gael leaned back slightly against the counter.

"You solve problems constantly. You manage schedules, finances, logistics, people." A small shrug. "Most startups are less organized than your kitchen."

Claire stared at him for a second longer than expected.

Not flirtation.

Recognition.

Real recognition.

Then she looked back down at the papers slowly.

"Nobody's ever described what I do like that before."

The quiet honesty in her voice changed the atmosphere immediately.

Because suddenly this wasn't about attraction anymore.

It was about identity.

Then Gael spoke before fully thinking it through.

"I could actually use help."

Claire looked back up instantly.

"With what?"

"Operations." He stepped toward the tablet and turned part of the screen toward her. "Property management, scheduling, coordination. I'm juggling too much myself lately."

The room went still.

Because suddenly the hypothetical future they'd only unconsciously drifted toward became real.

Work.

Daily proximity.

Intentional partnership.

Claire understood the implications immediately.

That was visible all over her face.

Then quieter:

"You're serious."

"Yes."

For several long seconds, neither spoke.

Because this wasn't just an offer.

It was escalation.
