Chapter 143 143: Cracks Beneath Warmth
Eventually they all went back upstairs.
Because what else could they do?
The rooftop still glowed with soft lights and half-finished drinks while Phil attempted to organize one final group photo despite widespread emotional exhaustion.
"People," he announced dramatically, "future memories are happening."
"Future therapy is happening," Alex corrected from the couch.
Claire returned beside Phil automatically while Gloria slipped back toward Jay's side with practiced ease.
And watching that hurt in ways Claire didn't want to examine too carefully.
Because Gloria looked natural there.
Believable.
Loved.
Jay wrapped one arm loosely around her waist while continuing some argument with Mitchell about restaurant pricing.
Completely comfortable.
Completely unaware.
Then Haley crossed toward Claire carrying two drinks.
"Where'd you disappear to?"
Claire accepted the glass carefully.
"Cam was emotionally spiraling downstairs."
"That checks out."
Across the rooftop, Cam looked offended despite not hearing them.
"I can sense judgment energetically."
Manny nodded solemnly beside him.
"That's one of his gifts."
Better.
That felt more like them.
Then Haley leaned slightly closer toward her mother.
"You okay?"
Simple question.
Still enough to make guilt flare sharply again.
Because Haley kept asking that lately.
Watching people more closely.
Reading emotional shifts instinctively.
Claire forced a smile.
"I'm fine."
And there it was again.
Another lie.
Small.
Gentle.
Still real.
Then Phil finally succeeded in corralling everyone together for another photo.
The arrangement happened naturally:
Jay with Gloria,
Mitchell beside Cam and Lily,
Luke leaning annoyingly into Manny,
Alex pretending not to participate while absolutely participating,
Haley beside Gael.
Claire ended up standing between Gael and Phil.
Right in the middle of both realities.
Phil wrapped an arm around her shoulder automatically while Haley leaned comfortably into Gael nearby.
And for one surreal second before the camera flashed, Claire became overwhelmingly aware of everything simultaneously:
Phil's warmth beside her,
Haley's trust,
Gloria's quiet emotional unraveling,
her own increasingly blurred feelings,
and the fact this entire family now revolved emotionally around a man none of them were supposed to need this much.
Flash.
The photo captured smiling faces.
Warm lighting.
Perfect family energy.
Nobody looking at it later would ever guess how unstable the emotional foundation underneath it had become.
Then after the photos dissolved into movement again, Haley pulled Gael toward the railing to show him the skyline while everyone else settled back into smaller conversations.
Claire watched them from across the rooftop.
Haley looked peaceful now.
Not anxious from the rooftop dinner earlier.
Not uncertain.
Just deeply happy being near him.
That made everything infinitely worse.
Then Gloria appeared quietly beside Claire holding another glass of wine.
Neither spoke at first.
They just watched the rooftop together:
family laughter,
Cam gesturing dramatically,
Phil explaining camera lenses to Luke incorrectly.
Then Gloria said softly without looking at her:
"I almost wish he'd done something terrible."
Claire understood immediately.
Because then hatred would be easier than longing.
"He didn't," Claire answered quietly.
"No." Gloria's smile turned sad around the edges. "That's the problem."
And standing there beside each other while the family laughed around them—
both women finally understood the same terrifying truth:
Gael hadn't manipulated anyone.
Which meant nobody could easily escape blaming themselves instead.
