Chapter 87: Holy Descent: The Four-Winged Angel
The awakening of the Seven-Headed Dragon drew even the attention of the Seven Princes deep within Hell. Behind them, countless devils burst into frenzied laughter, overflowing with unspeakable evil capable of corrupting any righteous soul the moment it was heard. Fortunately, because of the separation between realms, those wicked voices could not spread out from Hell itself, and devils found it extremely difficult to descend into the mortal world.
Within the Lateran Palace, the Pope also sensed the aura of the Seven-Headed Dragon while seated upon the Holy Throne.
"An existence of heresy!"
Pure holy light shimmered around him. Within that radiance, faintly visible by the billions, tiny angels sang sacred hymns. White flames burned within his eyes as the Pope slowly raised the Papal Staff in his hand. The power of believers throughout the entire world gathered upon it.
Then he pointed into the void.
"Holy Descent!"
A beam of light shot forth at near-light speed and instantly arrived above the Mist Swamp.
The light spread outward.
Above the Mist Swamp, the clouds suddenly churned violently. The previously dim sky became flooded with sacred radiance as an enormous phantom of the Heavenly Kingdom slowly emerged, stretching across the entire swamp. Majestic and solemn, it dispelled all the savagery and gloom brought by the Seven-Headed Dragon.
This phantom of the Heavenly Kingdom was not vague or illusory. It was so clear that it felt almost tangible.
As the gates of Heaven opened, the magnificent scenery within appeared before everyone's eyes, radiating holiness and sanctity.
At the heart of Heaven stood Paradise Mountain. The mountain itself was forged from pure white holy stone, while crystalline sacred springs flowed across its surface. Every droplet of springwater produced clear and melodious chimes, like music from paradise itself.
The mountainsides were covered in vast fields of sacred flowers, their petals glowing faintly gold. As the breeze swept through them, their fragrance spread through the air, soothing the soul.
Countless sparkling motes drifted throughout the mountain ranges. They were the holy spirits of Heaven, glowing softly as they adorned the entirety of Paradise Mountain.
At the summit stood the grand Temple of Heaven.
Its dome was embedded with billions of holy crystals that refracted dazzling sacred light.
The moment many people witnessed this scene, they became so overwhelmed that they immediately fell to their knees in devotion.
"My Lord, You've come to save us!"
Even within Levi's territory, large numbers of the common people knelt down. Only Yalina, Sky Knight Rune, and a few others remained standing.
After spending so much time around Levi, a wizard, their faith in the Lord was no longer quite so devout.
Levi looked at the sea of kneeling people throughout his territory and the corner of his mouth twitched slightly.
He could control their bodies, but he could not control their faith.
No wonder royal authority feared divine authority so deeply in this world.
If it were him, he would fear the power of faith as well.
Shaking his head inwardly, he continued watching the suddenly manifested Light of Heaven.
As the gates of Heaven opened and Paradise Mountain appeared, the hymns of billions of angels thundered across the world. Yet there was not the slightest trace of noise within them—only absolute holiness and solemn majesty.
"You are the Lord of Hosts, wielder of Heaven and Earth's authority. You are the Light of All Things, the one who dispels the darkness of the world. Clothed in holiness and crowned with compassion, You shelter all living beings and cleanse away evil."
"You are the Eternal Rock, the source of salvation. You protect faithful hearts and banish fear and shadow. You are supreme glory and boundless grace. With holy light as Your blade, You sever all evil."
"You gaze upon the cosmos and hear the prayers of all beings. Your light shines upon creation and heals the wounds of the world. All armies submit before You, all angels bow in worship before You. You alone are supreme. Yours alone is glory."
"..."
The hymns were low and distant, piercing through the clouds and spreading across a thousand miles.
Whether it was the refugees within Levi's territory or the people living elsewhere, the fear within their hearts gradually faded beneath the sound of those hymns. Their tense bodies slowly relaxed, while their faith in this Lord deepened further and further.
The faint silhouettes of billions of angels gradually appeared within the phantom of Heaven.
Some spread their pure white wings as they floated around Paradise Mountain.
Some held sacred harps, plucking the strings in accompaniment to the hymns.
Others stood with heads bowed in reverence, as though worshipping some divine existence.
That overwhelming holy power formed a stark contrast against the evil aura of the Seven-Headed Dragon.
At the peak of the hymns, the gates of the Heavenly Temple atop Paradise Mountain slowly opened.
The gates were carved from sacred white jade and engraved with patterns of the sun, moon, and stars.
As they opened, a holy radiance even brighter than the sun poured forth from within, illuminating the entire Mist Swamp.
All seven heads of the Seven-Headed Dragon revealed solemn expressions.
Then, a Four-Winged Angel slowly emerged from the gates of Heaven.
Two pairs of pure white wings spread behind the angel, each feather covered in intricate sacred patterns glowing with soft yet overwhelming holy light.
A faint sacred mist surrounded the angel's body. Its face was solemn and majestic, its gaze cold and unwavering.
In its hand, it tightly gripped a holy sword of pure radiant white, the blade gleaming with golden light. Embedded within the hilt was an enormous holy crystal that radiated the power to suppress all evil.
Levi grew curious and could not resist throwing a Detection spell at the angel.
The Four-Winged Angel revealed no information whatsoever.
The difference in existence level between them was simply too great.
However, the sword in its hand did reveal some information.
[The Sword of Christ, the holy sword wielded by the protagonist of the fairy tale The Two Brothers to slay the Seven-Headed Dragon.]
The moment he saw that information, Levi froze slightly.
Meanwhile, the Four-Winged Angel seemed to sense something and swept its gaze toward Hornreach.
In an instant, Levi felt the aura of death coil around him.
The very next moment, the Origin Energy within his body stirred. It sealed and concealed his Sea of Souls, along with his Magic Power pool, making him appear to be nothing more than a lord possessing the strength of a Great Knight.
The Four-Winged Angel found nothing unusual within the territory and soon shifted its gaze away.
At this moment, the angel had already stepped through the gates of Heaven, descending here through Holy Descent by drawing upon the power of billions of believers.
Behind it, the phantom of Heaven gradually became translucent, making it clear that bringing down even a single Four-Winged Angel was no easy feat.
This was not an era where Christ and saints still walked among mortals.
The vision of Paradise Mountain, the silhouettes of billions of angels, and the sacred hymns all slowly faded away together with the phantom, leaving only the Four-Winged Angel and the Sword of Christ suspended above the Mist Swamp.
Holy pressure swept downward, violently colliding against the evil pressure radiating from the Seven-Headed Dragon, producing deep thunderous booms.
The sky itself seemed on the verge of being torn apart.
This was a clash between domains.
No words were exchanged.
The battle erupted instantly.
Sensing the threat posed by the Four-Winged Angel, the Seven-Headed Dragon released a furious roar. All seven massive jaws simultaneously unleashed torrents of black dragon breath carrying enough destructive force to annihilate everything in their path as they blasted toward the angel.
The Four-Winged Angel's expression did not change. It swung the Sword of Christ, and a gigantic slash of holy light materialized out of thin air, cleaving apart and annihilating the black dragon breath before continuing toward the Seven-Headed Dragon.
Both dragon and angel moved at terrifying speeds. Ordinary Third-Ring Wizards could not even follow the battle with their eyes.
Levi could barely keep up only because of Detection.
Compared to them, Levi's own power felt pitifully weak—like that of an infant.
For the first time, Levi truly felt his own weakness.
The faint pride he had developed after reaching the level of a Third-Ring Wizard vanished completely.
The road ahead was still long.
At the very least, one needed to reach the level of the Seven-Headed Dragon or the Four-Winged Angel before earning the right to feel proud.
In that instant, Levi set a goal for himself deep within his heart.
He continued observing the battle in the sky through Detection.
Because the cheat granted to him by transmigration—Origin Energy—had suddenly revealed its power, Levi no longer needed to worry about his identity as a wizard being exposed.
That was why he dared continue watching.
Holy light and dragon breath intertwined and collided in the heavens. Half the sky was dyed sacred white, while the other half turned an eerie black. Shockwaves swept across the entire Mist Swamp, causing huge sections of the swamp to collapse. Magma and floodwaters intertwined, transforming the land into a living hell.
Fortunately, the battle was taking place deep within the swamp, and the Mist Swamp itself was enormous. The outer regions had not yet been affected, so both the kobolds and Levi's soldiers remained relatively safe.
But the battle in the sky only grew more intense.
The Four-Winged Angel continuously swung the Sword of Christ. The blade seemed to carry some kind of conceptual power—every strike bore the force to suppress evil itself. Wherever the holy sword passed, the evil aura in the air was completely purified, leaving radiant trails of sacred light behind.
The Seven-Headed Dragon, meanwhile, relied on its terrifying physical body and overwhelming dragon breath to launch frenzied counterattacks. Its seven heads attacked in relentless succession, and every collision shook the earth violently, reducing the trees and rocks deep within the swamp to dust.
The angel's wings beat ceaselessly as holy radiance poured downward again and again, repelling the dragon's assaults. The Sword of Christ repeatedly struck the dragon's body as well, leaving behind searing wounds that looked as though they had been burned by divine fire.
Objectively speaking, however—
The Four-Winged Angel was actually weaker than the Seven-Headed Dragon.
Even as the two battled directly, their domains continued clashing against one another.
And the Four-Winged Angel's domain was clearly inferior.
But the Sword of Christ was simply too powerful.
The Seven-Headed Dragon remained suppressed throughout the battle. Its body was covered in wounds scorched by holy light, huge numbers of scales had fallen away, and blood poured freely from its body. Two of its heads had been severely injured by the holy sword and now hung limply, their auras drastically weakened.
Yet the madness within its eyes only intensified further.
The humiliation of being suppressed, combined with its instinctive desire to survive, completely ignited the dragon's savagery.
The Seven-Headed Dragon descended into utter madness.
Suddenly, it violently beat its wings and halted in midair. All seven gigantic heads lifted simultaneously as it released a shrill roar that shook Heaven and Earth alike, filled with destruction and the resolve of sacrifice.
Then came a horrifying scene that made everyone's scalp go numb—
Six of the dragon's heads suddenly tore themselves off at the necks simultaneously.
Black dragon blood erupted outward like a storm, raining down upon the swamp below and staining the land crimson.
Yet after separating from the body, the six heads did not fall.
Instead, they floated around the dragon, transforming into six masses of pitch-black evil light that frantically surged toward the single remaining head.
By sacrificing six heads, the dragon gained an explosive surge of world-destroying power.
The dragon's sole remaining head now had eyes as red as blood, while dense black domain power erupted from its body.
