Birth of the True Demon Lord – Genius Hunter

真魔王の誕生・ハンターの才能

I was now reading a Manual for becoming a Hunter, one of the most profitable careers in the world but has equally very high mortality rate. Hunters take jobs or quests as it is termed, from the citizens and are paid for doing those quests. While some of them were less dangerous like dismantling, most of its quests however deal with monsters and that is why these quests are considered dangerous.

I did not arbitrarily choose to become a Hunter, after registering as a citizen, I find out that it had costed Aisha 5 silver coins for the Civil Registration, I thought immediately that I needed a way to cover for my expenses while staying in her household. That was when I saw the Hunters Guild across the Civil Registrar’s Office.

The Guild personnel had ushered me a seat and placed the Manual in my hands for me to read. Thankfully, there was no registration fee for becoming a hunter. According to the personnel it is a long-term investment scheme, to ensure that more Hunters join in and comply with the different quests.

Aisha was slightly against the idea of me joining the Hunters Guild, but I told her that I also needed to have my own expense money and so she consented only after I get my STATS checked.

A silent girl in frilly maid uniform (which seems to be the guild’s uniform for some reason) ushered me again towards the front desk, slowly pushed the TABULA RASA in front of me and had me place my hands on it.

The quite Guild Personnel girl silently looked at my upgraded STATUS, which shows my potential as a Hunter and gave a small smile. When she did that she look kind of cute, I wonder why she does not do it often then again I shouldn’t pray on others personal life.

Since she was too absorb in the results I decided to call out for her.

“So, do I meet the requirement for being a Hunter?”

“Ah- yes there shouldn’t be a problem joining the Guild.” She was flustered. “Since you are at level 1 and a complete rookie and will start as a BRONZE Hunter, as such you will undergo training to increase your chances in the open field. Here is your quota for you to Rank Up to IRON Rank.”

The quite guild girl then handed me another sheet of paper and I immediately look at its content and this is how I had interpreted it according to how this quite guild personnel had explained it.

I will start as a BRONZE Rank, an entry level for the Hunters. In order to Rank-up I must first take up several quests according to my Rank. For now, I will do the following:

  1. Combat Training this one is not a quest per se for us Bronze Ranks, but a way for us to learn the ropes of becoming a proficient Hunter. We will be trained for 150 Bells by a Silver Rank Hunter to gain BRONZE-1 and another 100 Bells by a Ruby Rank to gain BRONZE-2. We will be paying for the instructors and we can only choose to raise either our ‘magical aptitude’ or ‘weapon aptitude’ for this training. We can learn other skills later when we are on our own. This is a Guild Mandated for Bronze Ranks and there are No Remunerations.
  2. Supervised Subjugation Quests – is quest that is mandated by the Guild, we do subjugation under supervision from any either a Silver or a Ruby Ranked hunter do 10 threat level E monsters to become BRONZE-3 and 10 threat level F monsters to become BRONZE-4. Magic Cores Remunerations will be used to pay the Silver Rank Instructors
  3. Dismantling Quest – this quest teaches dismantling and allows us to dismantle monsters on our own doing 10 of these quests will gain me BRONZE-5.
  4. Gathering Quest– this is a quest that gathers from the wild and presents it to the quest giver. Quest Giver: Various. Remuneration: 2 Small Copper Coins/ Quest. After complying with 15 of these quests I will be called a BRONZE-6 Hunter.
  5. Cleaning Quest – although it state there cleaning, it is not cleaning per se it is actually fighting monsters living in the sewers and purifying the waters that run through the sewers. I need to do cleaning quest 20 times. The quest is always open so you can do this as many time as you wish throughout the day and the area is so vast you won’t have to worry about running out of it. Quest Giver: The Kingdom of Galvaland. Remuneration: 5 Small Copper Coins/ Quest. After complying with the first 10 of these quests I will be considered BRONZE-7 Hunter and the next 10 quests will earn me BRONZE-8.
  6. Magic Core Submission Quest – since I have been subjugating under supervision and cleaning in the sewers I should have already taken 30 magic cores which should be enough to pay the instructor, I will have the remaining 20 Magic Cores for my own as starting finances. Quest Giver: The Kingdom of Galvaland. Remuneration: 3 to 5 Small Copper Coins (depending on the threat level: 5 for F and 10 for E). BRONZE-9
  7. By obtaining a Source Level to 10 or higher I will gain BRONZE-10
By Gaining BRONZE -10, I will then be given the right to take up the test. The test is a showcase of strength and mastery of the skills I have learned from this Entry Level. Unlike the vague novels I somehow remember from my amnesiac mind, Hunter’s here in Resmere cannot skip Ranks. Even if for some reason you are already Source Level of 50 you will always start at Bronze level until you have done all the pre-requisite quests.

With this I should be able to help alleviate Aisha’s financial problems. So, I decided to register at the Hunters Guild and have my left dorsal side of my hand branded with the Hunters Guild Seal that acts as our Guild Identification.

And tomorrow I will Hunt.

*****

A few days later, my Hunter Training will begin, 150 Bells will be handled by a Silver Rank Hunter and the remaining 100 Bells will be taken over by a Ruby Rank Hunter. It was a bit hard to find an instructor that would fit the combat skill I already possess at level 1, Great Scythe or Whip Arts so I had to wait a week for the guild to find the proper instructors to supervise me with these weapons.

While waiting for the instructor to come, it had become a routine for me to help Aisha collect herbs in the meadow where I met her. And oh, I also had increased my debt to Aisha by having her brought me a Farmer’s Scythe which had cost 2 Large Copper Coin.

Allow me to explain a bit how the Currency works in this world. This world’s currency s called PERA abbreviated with P and it is denominated this way:

  • Bronze Coin - 1 P
  • Large Bronze Coin - 10 P
  • Silver Coin - 100 P
  • Large Silver Coin - 1,000 P
  • Gold Coin - 10,000 P
  • Large Gold Coin - 100,000 P
  • Platinum Coin - 1,000,000 P
2 large coins is equivalent to 20 P, so with that I now owe Aisha 35 P together with the Civil Registration which cost her 1 Large Bronze and 5 Small Bronze Coins. I really need to work myself to repay her somehow.

At first, she was quite angry that a patient was now working a dangerous career to pay her. She even mentioned that doing the chores would have been enough, but…

“I think that being able to pay depts is something that was imprinted by parents so even a little allow me to pay for my stay here.” This was critical point, since I used my vague prior lifestyle, I was able to win the argument, I then added… “Besides I need to buy my own clothing and under garments, I can’t have you pay for something like that, can’t I?”

And so, she consented as long as I don’t go on crazy hunts that would lead me to my grave, Aisha was really kind and caring. I then pumped myself for my training and give me a better chance in battle as a Hunter. By learning the ropes in the early stage, you will get the foundations of a proficient Hunter or so at least that is how I see it, level grinding can come after that.

After helping Aisha gather her daily needs of herbs, I then proceeded to the Hunter’s Guild to have my first 150 Bells from a Silver Rank the Guild has arranged for me. I will be paying him soon when we go hunting so I need to learn as much as I can.

Upon arriving at the Guild, the silent Guild Personnel smiled at me. She was with an older person. I am guessing that he is the Silver Rank that will be taking care of my training.

“You …are early.” The silent Guild personnel ushered me towards the reception desk, she was the girl who had explained the specifics of the Guild to me, I believe her name was Altrea. A serious face planted on her face. “Sorry that it took a while, but we finally found you a trainer.”

As if on cue, the unfamiliar guy approached us. Seeing him I then bowed as I lowered myself, I felt a strong gust of bloodlust and when I tried to back off, I was struck with a sword at neck point.

“Mr. Antonio what are you doing!” the usually silent Astrea was flustered and with good reason too, I am an inch to death.

“Sorry about that Altrea.” The older Hunter smiled at her, then towards me. “I just wanted to test the Hunter Trainee that met Altrea’s interest.”

“My name is Antonio Geired, Gold Rank Hunter. I will be supervising your training from now on.”

“Ha?” I could only let out an uncivilized voice. I think my ears might be affected by my amnesia and heard the older hunter –Antonio says that he was a Gold Rank Hunter. That can’t be right, right?

“Mr. Antonio, I might have misheard you the first time… but you’re a Silver Rank Hunter, right?” I needed to clarify this point first.

“No, you heard me right the first time. I am indeed a Gold Rank Hunter.” He answers simply. “Is there something wrong with my rank?”

He is asking me if there something wrong… when everything about this scenario is clearly wrong. I then placed my hopes to the person who found this Hunter and turn my attention to the Astrea hoping that she could shed some light to this event.

“Well unfortunately, we were not able to find Hunters who specialize in Great Scythe or Whip Arts.” She looks me in the eye and answered me earnestly. “After all, those two are rarely used as weapons in combat.”

There is truth in her words, but I had told her before that it did not have to be any of these two weapons. I had asked this to be trained with this since I seem to have talent for them, but I was already fully aware that Scythes and Whips are not conventional weapons, so I had told her that a standard Sword Arts Hunter would do, but she shot me with a strange smile and clearly looked at the tool I brought with me.

“Ge!” that’s right I had already, with the use of Aisha’s money bought a Farmer’s Scythe to be used as a weapon. I really need to think things through before buying and sighed at my own stupidity.

“Then is Mr. Antonio a Great Scythe Arts Wielder? Or are you Whip Arts Wielder?”

“Me, I’m a Sword Arts Wielder.” He shot me with his bared teeth smile.

I involuntarily shot a skeptic look towards the blushing Astrea. I mean if it was going to be like this a Silver Rank Hunter Sword Arts Wielder would have been enough and yet I have here one rank below the highest Rank –A Gold Rank Hunter to train me.

“Although it is quite an honor to have a high rank train me… unfortunately I do not have the money to pay such an instructor.”

“You do not have to worry about that, the Guild will pay for him during the duration of your training, and you will then just have to pay the guild by installments.” Astrea smiled.

“Does this have something to do with my STATS?” I need to clarify my standpoint before making a decision.

“Yes, you are quite perceptive.” Astrea nods at me. “Truthfully your STATS are too high for an average citizen. But with your amnesia we can’t verify the reason for these high STATS.”

“So, for the time-being I will act as your instructor as well as your observer.”

“Do not misunderstand us, Elfreid. It is no like that we are doubting you or something like that.” Astrea shot a strange glare at Mr. Antonio. “While it is true that we are wary of your identity, I have assigned Antonio to you because I believe that you will become a valued asset for the Hunters Guild.”

Astrea then smiled at me. While it was clear that she might have ulterior motives for having Mr. Antonio train me, it was also genuine that she was taking care of me as a member of the Guild.

“Okay then Mr. Antonio, I will be in your care from now on please train me well.” I then bowed at Mr. Antonio.

“Oh, be sure to be prepared I am strict with my training policies.”
