Why the hell is Octina here at this point in time?

No matter how much I thought about it, I simply couldn’t find an answer. But more importantly, this wasn’t a normal summoning.

She was manifesting in reality itself.

Lily shouldn’t have possibly been able to control Octina at this point with that stupidly rebellious personality of hers, there was no way she should have been able to summon her willingly, let alone make her manifest in her true form.

So, I simply couldn’t understand why she was here.

Still, now wasn’t the time to think.

If even a single person died because of Octina, Lily would be in serious trouble.

I could probably make it look like a random monster attack if I asked Nyx for help but if someone actually died, that damned Principal wouldn’t let it slide without an investigation.

That would inevitably bring the Awakened Association into the matter and once they got involved, there was no telling what could happen.

So, I had to take her away.

"Seles, are you okay?"

I asked immediately as she nodded.

"Good. Follow me!"

With those words, the two of us shot out of the cafe’s compartment. I immediately spotted Aurelion, who was busy staring at the massive creature in shock as well.

"Aurelion! This isn’t the time to be shocked. Distract that creature before it harms anyone!"

I screamed at him.

He was surprised for a moment, seeing his disguise exposed but he didn’t say anything more. He understood the situation and simply nodded.

"Alright!"

A spear appeared in his hand as he lunged at the creature through the open ceiling, while most of the people around us remained frozen in shock and fear.

The fairies and druids, for all their specialties, were weak as fuck because they were a peaceful species.

There were a few violent exceptions like Ruan, but the ones running this cafe were definitely not among them.

As he distracted Octina, I dragged Seles out of the cafe with me.

I didn’t know what was happening but Octina seemed to be focused on me...

Or Seles.

I didn’t know which.

So, by running towards a secluded location, I was certain she would follow us.

"What is happening, Zenith?"

Seles asked, her body trembling in fear.

For someone so cunning, she sure was scared of death. But then again, aside from some nutcases, who wasn’t?

"I would like to know that as well." I muttered as we ran through the now-empty streets. "By the way, whatever is happening, it seems like the creature is too focused on you. Did you buy some forbidden item or perhaps something that would cause a spirit to come after you?"

Her eyes immediately widened.

"It’s after me?" She whispered in disbelief. "But why? I don’t remember getting anything that would anger a spirit."

"I don’t know but judging by how it attacked you immediately after descending, I am sure it’s after you."

I lied as easily as breathing.

"But don’t worry. I have a way to save you, even if it means sacrificing my life."

"What are you talking about? Shouldn’t we be waiting for the Principal? I am sure she will come to save us soon."

Seles argued.

"Can’t you see the sky, Seles? And haven’t you noticed the empty streets?" I simply pointed towards the completely red sky. "We are currently inside a Manifestation Nexus."

I wasn’t lying and Seles immediately understood what that meant.

Manifestation was a phenomenon where a spirit attempted to descend into reality in its true form, inevitably turning the entire area around its descent into a separate dimension until the manifestation was complete.

The resulting space was called a Manifestation Nexus.

It resembled the exact layout of the real world and from the looks of it, the entire cafe we had been sitting in had been carried over into this space.

That was also the reason why everything around the cafe was completely devoid of people.

Hell, I wasn’t even sure if anyone in the outside world had noticed what was happening yet.

Since this was a relatively peaceful shopping complex situated in the centre of the Arcanum, there wasn’t even much security around this particular area.

"So, until we stop the descent as soon as possible, the spirit will continue to grow stronger and eventually kill every one of us before descending into reality."

I scared her even further, but honestly, it wasn’t a lie either.

"What do I need to do?"

She asked, completely serious and ready to do anything if it meant saving her life.

"Just rely on me."

Although this wasn’t part of my original plan and I had been saving this for the dungeon, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, right?

So, I decided to do it here since I had been given the perfect opportunity.

I stopped and looked into her eyes.

We were already far enough away, so there was no need to run anymore.

Octina had actually followed us here and Aurelion was trying to fight one of her tentacles, only to get slammed towards us.

CRASH!

"My Talent only works when someone genuinely relies on me to protect them, Seles. That was the secret behind how I held my own against Ruvian at that party. My sister trusted me back then."

I deepened my lie.

"So, just rely on me with your heart. Will you?"

"B-But I already trust you?!"

Octina’s tentacles were closing in on us but I didn’t move. Seles wasn’t exactly physically gifted either, so there was no way she could move under such pressure.

"No, you don’t, Seles. From everything I have noticed, you are suffering inside, alone in that dark abyss of your own thoughts."

I pushed further as Octina’s tentacles wrapped around both of us, the eight eyes on her head immediately focusing on us as she pulled us towards her.

"You are a gentle person but you are too afraid to rely on others because you feel it’s a weakness but it’s not, Seles. Because even the strongest need someone to rely on so they don’t go mad, don’t they?"

"Seles! Zenith!"

Aurelion screamed from the side, his body bleeding slightly from the heavy blow he had received. Although it wasn’t going to be easy, I already knew how to send Octina back.

I was just hoping Seles would crack before I had to do it, but she was too damn smart. Even as we were being pulled towards Octina’s wide, gaping mouth, she remained suspicious.

"You didn’t flinch."

The tentacle tightened around us as Seles finally spoke.

"When it came through the ceiling, everyone in that cafe stopped breathing. Even my own heart stopped for a moment but you were the only one who remained calm and looked up as if you recognized that monster."

"And now you are asking me to rely on you by telling me something I have no way of verifying. How can I even trust you, Zenith?"

That’s why I always hated smart people.

Even with our lives on the line, even while she was a nervous wreck, her mind somehow caught every irregularity.

But if that was what she wanted, then fine.

Meanwhile, Aurelion lunged at Octina again, distracting her just enough to buy us more time. And I had to admit, he was holding up quite well against a monster with eight tentacles for someone who was fighting such a creature for the first time.

"Seles, now isn’t the time to decide that. Okay, I agree that everything about this situation makes me look suspicious but trust me when I say that, in the whole world, there is no one who knows you better than I do."

"I know how much you like cloudberry tart. I know how you keep a diary of all the people you hate. I know how much you despise every single person who values you for your blood rather than your capabilities and I know how much you hate your own family."

Her eyes widened but I didn’t have any choice but to bring out the big guns now even if she might think of me as some creepy stalker or... something worse.

"I know I can’t make you trust me in an instant. Knowing your cautious nature, that’s something even the Gods might struggle with but I want you to know that I have seen you for a very long time and at least at this moment, you can rely on me."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"Even if it’s difficult, I want you to trust me enough to believe that I can get you out of this situation because only then can I even hope to save us both."

I didn’t have much time and I knew this much wasn’t enough to earn her trust but I didn’t need that anyway, I just needed her to rely on me with all her heart.

If she didn’t give in, I would have to move anyway, so I could only hope she did it soon.

Octina swung another one of her tentacles at Aurelion, who had been bugging her like a mosquito, swatting the poor guy into the ground once again before turning her gaze towards us.

This time, she was quick.

Her massive mouth opened wide, revealing rows upon rows of teeth within.

I seriously didn’t know what her problem was. Lily definitely wouldn’t have given her this order. That meant Octina was acting on her own.

And now I knew for sure that Seles wasn’t the one she was targeting. From the very beginning, she had been after me for some reason.

As her tentacles pulled us right above her mouth, a soft whisper echoed from beside me.

"Save me." Seles’s eyes filled with tears. "I don’t want to die like this."

Her voice dropped to a whisper as she looked down slightly.

"And if we actually make it out of this alive... you better explain what you meant by all of that in detail—ahhh!"

Before she could finish her sentence, I pulled out Kosetsu without even bothering to look at the multiple status windows that had appeared before me.

Kosetsu’s fragmented blade moved with precision, slicing through the entire tentacle holding us.

Seles’s body immediately dropped with gravity but I caught her mid-air before throwing her towards Aurelion.

"Aurelion, take her away and keep your distance from the cafe. Don’t stop running. I have a way to take care of this."

I didn’t even wait for his response or check whether he had caught her.

Instead, I jumped straight into Octina’s wide-open mouth...

...because it was finally time to take care of her.
