Chapter 279: Deal
Chapter 279: Chapter 278 : Deal
“So, what would an all-powerful big shot like you want with me, a poor drunk nobody?” John Constantine asked, taking another drag from his cigarette.
“Don’t sell yourself short. You’re one of the best magicians on Earth, and you’re also a big shot among demons. Your name alone is enough to cause trouble,” Daniel said.
Daniel wasn’t exaggerating. The number of demons John Constantine had pissed off over the years could probably fill an entire mall. The bastard didn’t even need god-level power to cause problems.
He made deals with practically everyone, promised them his soul, and then, when the time came to collect, somehow managed to find a loophole and avoid paying up.
That was exactly why demons had given John a reputation of his own.
Among them, he was known as a scumbag bastard.
Constantine took another drag from his cigarette and gave Daniel a sideways look.
“You’re making me sound worse than I am.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Am I?”
“So, what’s the job?” Constantine asked, finally becoming a little more interested.
Daniel shrugged. “I just need help with a teenager. She’s having a hard time controlling her powers, and there’s a pretty good chance she’ll hurt someone if we don’t get it under control.”
Constantine stared at him for a moment before grinning.
“Hahaha. That’s it? Then you’ve come to the right bloke. Consider it done.”
Daniel reached over and snatched the cigarette straight from Constantine’s mouth.
Constantine blinked. “Oi!”
“No smoking until the job is finished.”
“You can’t just—”
Daniel crushed the cigarette between his fingers and tossed it aside. “I can, and I just did.”
Constantine stared at him, clearly annoyed, but eventually sighed.
“Fine. Where’s this problem teenager?”
Daniel turned toward an empty section of the room and raised his hand.
He tore open the air, creating a dark portal.
Rachel was pulled through the opening, still restrained by Diana’s golden lasso. Her eyes remained completely black, and the moment she saw Constantine, she immediately started struggling.
“What the fuck is this?” Rachel snapped. “Daniel, you fucking asshole, let me go!”
Constantine looked at Rachel, then at Daniel.
“You didn’t mention she was possessed.”
“I said she was having trouble controlling her powers.”
“That’s not the same bloody thing.”
Rachel glared at Constantine. “And who the hell are you?”
“John Constantine.”
“Well, John Constantine, go fuck yourself.”
Constantine looked at Daniel.
“She’s charming.”
“Yeah, she’s been like this all day.”
Daniel gestured toward Rachel. “Here. Make her normal again.”
Constantine stared at the teenager for a few seconds, then his expression became more serious as he noticed the demonic energy surrounding her.
“Right,” he muttered. “This might be a little more complicated than I thought.”
Constantine looked Rachel over for a few seconds, paying close attention to the black eyes and the dark energy surrounding her. He pulled out a small piece of equipment from his coat and held it near her, watching its reaction.
“Yeah, she’s possessed,” Constantine said. “And not by some low-level demon either.”
Rachel struggled against the lasso. “Fuck you.”
“Charming,” Constantine muttered before looking at Daniel. “Can I use a violent method to force the demon out?”
Daniel immediately shook his head. “No. You can’t use violence on her.”
Constantine frowned. “Why not?”
“Because this demon is a part of her . If you hurt it, there’s no guarantee Rachel won’t get hurt too. I want her alive and in one piece.”
Constantine sighed and put the equipment away.
“Fine. Then this is going to take more work.”
Daniel nodded. “Can you do it?”
“I can,” Constantine said, then held out his hand. “But you’re going to have to increase the price.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You serious?”
“Completely serious. You want me to deal with a powerful demon without using the quickest method? That’s more work, more risk, and more time.”
Daniel shook his head. “You really are the scumbag bastard the demons call you.”
Constantine grinned.
“Still the best magician they know.”
Daniel finally nodded. “Fine. I’ll pay the increased price. Just teach her how to control this inner demon before she ends up killing someone.”
“Gladly,” John said.
He walked over to one of his shelves and pulled out a huge magic tome that looked like it hadn’t been touched in years. John wiped the dust off the cover with his hand, sending a cloud of dust into the air.
Rachel immediately coughed and waved it away. “Jesus fucking Christ! Couldn’t you clean this place once?”
John ignored her and opened the book, flipping through the old pages.
“So, can I ask for immortality?” John asked casually.
Daniel looked at him. “That’s pushing it. Do you think immortality is fucking cabbage? Anyone can just hand it out?”
John raised an eyebrow.
“Besides, even though I have it, I’m not giving it to you,” Daniel added.
“Why not?”
“Because the moment I give you immortality, every demon you’ve ever pissed off is going to come looking for me. Then I’ll have to deal with them every damn day, asking why I gave John Constantine immortality.”
John considered that for a moment before giving a small nod.
“Fair point.”
Daniel pointed toward Rachel. “Now forget about immortality and teach her how to control that thing.”
John turned toward Rachel and opened the tome.
“Right. Let’s see what we’re dealing with.”
