Chapter 81: Wardens of the Deep
The descent into the Tartarus Vaults was not a staircase; it was a vertical plunge into the suppressed subconscious of heaven.
As Kaelen, Seraphina, and Ariel descended beneath the rotting obsidian foundations of the Abyssal Court, the ambient temperature plummeted. The pristine, orderly hum of celestial magic was entirely gone. Here, the air smelled heavily of rusted iron, coagulated blood, and the sharp, acidic tang of unfiltered fear.
"The Goddess preaches absolute grace," Ariel observed softly, her six shadow-wings drawn tightly against her back to navigate the narrow, jagged chasm. "Yet she required a basement to hide the bodies of those who refused to break."
"Every empire needs a butcher, Valkyrie," he replied smoothly, his heavy Void-Steel boots echoing against the dark stone. "The Goddess simply lacked the spine to look hers in the eye."
They reached the bottom.
The narrow chasm opened up into a cavernous, sprawling underworld of staggering proportions. The Tartarus Vaults were a nightmare of suspended iron cages, boiling lakes of crimson plasma, and massive, grinding gears that seemed to serve no purpose other than to generate an atmosphere of perpetual, agonizing noise.
At the very center of the cavern, acting as a structural pillar for the entire dimension, was a colossal spire of raw, pulsating red crystal. It was the Conceptual Anchor—the heavy, localized mass of localized sin that was actively blocking the Labyrinth Core from finalizing the assimilation.
Surrounding the anchor was a standing army of nightmares.
Hundreds of Celestial Executioners prowled the perimeter. They were fifteen feet of hyper-compressed, rotting divine muscle. Their massive, charred wings dragged uselessly behind them. Their faces were entirely concealed beneath seamless, heavy iron masks. They did not speak. They did not cast localized wards. They simply gripped their massive cleavers—weapons forged from the crystallized guilt of a billion damned souls.
"They do not possess a telepathic network, Master," Ariel warned, her corrupted blue eyes narrowing as she scanned the horde. "They operate purely on primal instinct. They detect foreign conceptual weight, and they eradicate it. We cannot intimidate them."
Seraphina stepped in front of her Emperor, rolling her shoulders. The Eclipse Vanguard’s Exalted-Tier greatsword, the Eclipse Breaker, roared to life, casting a violently aggressive black light across the rusted cavern.
"Good," Seraphina hissed, a deeply manic, euphoric smile stretching across her face. "Intimidation is so incredibly boring."
The Executioners noticed the Abyssal Demigods.
There was no war cry. There was no coordinated tactical formation. The entire horde simply violently violently surged forward in a terrifying, synchronized stampede of raw kinetic intent. The ground actively quaked beneath the weight of their charge.
"Vanguard," he commanded, crossing his arms casually over his chest. "Take the vanguard."
"With pleasure!"
Seraphina didn’t brace for the impact; she launched herself directly into the center of the stampede like a cannonball.
She collided with the lead Executioner, swinging her massive greatsword in a devastating upward arc. The sheer, hyper-dense gravity of her Level 105 Ascendant core met the raw kinetic trauma of the beast. The resulting shockwave actively shattered the rusted iron cages hanging above them.
Seraphina’s void-diamond blade sheared flawlessly through the Executioner’s sin-cleaver, continuing upward to violently cleave the monster’s seamless iron mask in half.
Golden plasma, thick and corrupted with red sin, aggressively sprayed across her pale skin.
[Hostile Entity Eliminated: Celestial Executioner (Level 110).]
"Yes!" Seraphina roared, completely abandoning her defensive posture. "Show me how heaven bleeds!"
She became a localized hurricane of absolute entropy. The Executioners were brutally strong, their physical blows carrying enough raw force to shatter mountains, but they were fighting a Demigoddess who actively thrived in the dark. Every time a massive cleaver struck her dragon-glass armor, the kinetic energy was forcefully swallowed by her expanding Eclipse Aura, only to be violently redirected outward in a pulse of catastrophic black fire.
"They are swarming her," Ariel noted coolly, raising her pale hands.
"Give her room to breathe, Valkyrie," he ordered.
Ariel unfurled her six shadow-wings to their absolute maximum wingspan. "Abyssal Directive: Puppeteer’s Strings."
Millions of razor-thin threads of localized dark mana aggressively erupted from Ariel’s wings, shooting into the fray. The shadows actively latched onto the limbs of the charging Executioners. The monsters roared, trying to muscle through the bindings, but Ariel wasn’t trying to overpower them physically. She was conceptually anchoring their shadows to the floor.
Dozens of the massive beasts violently tripped, their fifteen-foot frames crashing heavily into the rusted earth, creating the perfect opening for Seraphina to systematically systematically systematically sever their spines.
Suddenly, the boiling lake of crimson plasma to Kaelen’s right violently erupted.
Three Executioners, having completely bypassed the Vanguard’s melee, launched themselves out of the boiling sin directly at Kaelen. Their heavy iron masks were superheated, and their cleavers were raised in flawless, synchronized execution strikes aimed directly at his neck, chest, and legs.
"Master!" Ariel called out, preparing to shift her shadows.
"Focus on your tethers, Ariel," he commanded smoothly, not even turning his head.
The Abyssal Emperor didn’t dodge. He didn’t draw a weapon. He forcefully flared the suffocating gravity of his Primordial Sovereign core.
The air around him instantly became heavier than the core of a dying star. The three fifteen-foot-tall monsters hit the localized gravity field and violently stalled in mid-air, their massive muscles bulging and tearing as they desperately tried to push their cleavers through the absolute ambition of the Emperor.
He slowly turned to face the suspended Executioner on his left.
"You are just discarded tools," he whispered, his pitch-black eyes locking onto the seamless iron mask. "And I have no use for blunt instruments."
He raised his right hand and casually punched the Executioner directly in the center of its iron face.
The God-Eater authority flared. The impact didn’t just break the mask; it generated a hyper-condensed vacuum of raw void mana that actively imploded the monster’s skull. The headless corpse was forcefully launched backward, skipping across the boiling lake of plasma like a discarded stone.
[Hostile Entity Eliminated: Celestial Executioner (Level 110).]
Without dropping his momentum, he violently reached out and grabbed the massive, jagged sin-cleaver of the second Executioner with his bare hand. The blade, designed to conceptually rend the soul, aggressively hissed and sparked against Kaelen’s palm, completely unable to penetrate his skin.
He violently twisted his wrist. The massive weapon shattered. He stepped forward, driving his heavy Void-Steel boot directly into the monster’s knee, effortlessly snapping the thick joint backward. As the beast collapsed, he grabbed the edges of its iron mask and aggressively ripped it clean off, exposing the rotting, faceless mass of celestial flesh beneath.
He didn’t hesitate. He plunged his hand directly into the exposed flesh, forcefully gripping its corrupted divine core, and ripped it out.
[Hostile Entity Eliminated: Celestial Executioner (Level 110).]
[Item Acquired: Core of Coagulated Sin.]
The third Executioner, witnessing the effortless, brutal dismantling of its kin, finally broke its primal programming. It hesitated.
That hesitation was fatal.
He didn’t even look at it. He simply tossed the freshly ripped core into the air. Before it could fall, a violently concentrated beam of hyper-dense void mana shot from his fingertips, completely vaporizing the third Executioner into a harmless cloud of gray static.
The Emperor dusted off his dark tunic, stepping over the slowly dissolving corpses.
Ahead of him, the cavern was growing quiet. Seraphina stood atop a mountain of severed limbs and shattered iron masks, her chest heaving, completely drenched in golden and crimson plasma. She looked back at him, her eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute devotion.
"The horde is broken, my Sovereign," she purred, licking a stray drop of blood from her lip.
"Excellent work, Vanguard," he praised smoothly, walking past her toward the colossal, pulsating red crystal spire at the center of the vault.
This was the Conceptual Anchor. The final lock holding the Sphere of Judgment together.
He placed his calloused hand directly onto the boiling hot surface of the crystal. The God-Eater authority aggressively flooded from his palm, actively eating away at the ten thousand years of compressed guilt and malice.
"Tell Elara to prepare the terminal," he commanded, the multi-tonal resonance of his voice echoing across the Abyssal Trinity link. "I am unchaining the basement."
With a deafening, world-ending crack, the massive red spire violently shattered.
[Conceptual Anchor Destroyed.]
[Assimilation Resuming: 85%... 95%... 100%.]
[System Notification: The Tartarus Vaults have been fully integrated into the Labyrinth.]
[Arc 2 Milestone: Sphere of Judgment is fully secured.]
He smiled. Heaven had officially lost its first territory. Now, it was time to point the Void-Cruiser toward the libraries of the Goddess and burn her secrets to the ground.
