Chapter 409: Did He Bully You?
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and took her hand. "Your sister is still young," he said. "It’s not too late for her to find out."
"The women in our family have terrible luck," Anne Sutton said. "All we ever meet are scumbags."
Nathan Fawcett asked, "Am I one of them?"
"Who knows?" Anne Sutton retorted. "I have no idea what you’re really like. You act one way in front of me, but who knows what you’re like behind my back! By the way, I heard you’re... cured?"
"Cured of what?" Nathan Fawcett asked.
"The rumor is that you can touch women now?"
"..." Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "I suppose so?"
"So, who have you been touching?" she asked, staring at him intently, as if trying to read something suspicious in his eyes.
Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "No one! I haven’t."
"No one? I don’t believe you for a second. You’re obviously lying!"
Nathan Fawcett looked aggrieved. "You’re wronging me! Just because other people screw up doesn’t mean you can lump me in with them. I’m not like them!"
"How would I know if you’re like them or not?" Anne Sutton said. "Maybe you’re exactly the same, just better at hiding it."
Seeing he couldn’t win the argument, Nathan Fawcett quickly changed the subject. "Hey, uh, I’m hungry. When’s dinner? Did your mom say when we’re eating?"
Anne Sutton stood up. "I’ll go check."
She walked out the door and saw Mrs. Sutton, who had just come out as well. "Oh, there you are!" Mrs. Sutton said when she saw Anne.
Anne Sutton said, "Nathan says he’s hungry. He was asking when dinner will be ready."
"It’s almost ready," Mrs. Sutton said. "Sharon is hungry too! You should all eat together! Is that alright?"
Anne Sutton smiled. "Of course, we can."
’We’re all family, so of course we should eat together. It’s not like we’re going to set up two separate tables!’
Anne Sutton went back to get Nathan Fawcett. Then she found Ian, who was playing by himself, and they all went to the private dining room together.
David Hayes, who was sitting off to the side, saw Nathan Fawcett and greeted him, "Brother-in-law."
Nathan Fawcett glanced at him but didn’t respond.
He sat down.
When Nathan Fawcett ignored him, David Hayes didn’t say anything either. He was already used to Nathan’s condescending attitude.
Everyone sat down to eat together.
Since it was a rare visit from Sharon, Mrs. Sutton was quite happy. She had made a lot of her daughter’s favorite dishes and kept putting more food onto Sharon’s plate.
David Hayes sat to the side, unable to get a word into the conversation, so he just played on his phone out of boredom.
Lucy Todd sent him a message: "Have you eaten yet?"
"Eating now."
"So, how is it? Is Veridia fun?"
"Haven’t had a chance to go out yet," David Hayes replied. "We just got off the plane and came straight here to eat."
"My mom and I are eating too." David Hayes’s mother was currently living with Lucy Todd.
David had bought a separate apartment, and his mother had moved in. Lucy would sometimes go over as well.
Since Sharon disliked David’s mother, she rarely visited the new apartment, so she almost never ran into them.
This conveniently gave the two of them plenty of space.
Anne Sutton ate quietly, chopsticks in hand, but she kept glancing over at David Hayes from time to time.
Seeing him so engrossed in his phone, paying absolutely no attention to Sharon, made her blood boil.
If not for the fact that Sharon was due to give birth soon, and that things were already hard enough for her with her big belly, Anne would have exposed his true colors right then and there.
Nathan Fawcett, sitting beside her, placed some food in Anne’s bowl. "You like this. Eat some more."
Ian saw his father’s blatant favoritism and piped up, "Dad, I like that too."
Nathan Fawcett glanced at him. "Don’t you still have some in your bowl?"
Mrs. Sutton, watching the exchange from the side, laughed. "Don’t worry, Ian, there’s still more. If you want, I can bring another plate in for you in a little while."
Anne Sutton moved a piece from her own bowl into Ian’s. "Here, you can have this."
"You’re the best, Mom."
"..."
He looked at Anne. "I gave that to you!"
"Oh, hush. Just eat your own food and don’t worry about me," Anne Sutton said, rolling her eyes at him.
’He’s probably just trying to butter me up because he’s afraid I’ll give him a hard time.’
...
After dinner, Mrs. Sutton still had work to do at the restaurant, so Anne took Sharon and David Hayes home.
Nathan and Ian came back with them.
However, Nathan wasn’t planning on staying the night.
He had to go back to the Linden estate that evening and would be taking Ian with him.
Anne went upstairs to pack a few things for Ian. "Do I have to go today?" Ian asked. "I want to stay with you, Mom!"
Anne said, "You should go with your dad. Your great-grandfather wants to see you, too."
Ian was living with Anne now, so Nathan only brought him over to see Master Linden when the old man specifically asked.
As it happened, Master Linden hadn’t been feeling well for the past couple of days, so Nathan needed to go look after him that evening.
His grandfather had always been very good to him. Anna Linden was always busy with her own affairs, and Nathan couldn’t possibly leave all the responsibility of caring for their grandfather to his own mother.
Ian stood by, looking crestfallen.
Anne looked at her son and crouched down in front of him. "Your great-grandfather is getting old, so you need to go and help look after him. Just think, if one day I get old and my children don’t come to take care of me, and I’m just lying in bed all alone... wouldn’t that be pitiful?"
Hearing this, Ian said, "I’ll take care of you when you get old. Besides, my mom will never get old. You’ll be young forever."
His words made Anne laugh. She gave him a kiss on the cheek. "That’s right! Ian is the best boy. Now go on, go with your dad."
Ian nodded.
Anne brought them downstairs. David and Sharon were in the living room; David was cutting some fruit for her.
Seeing Nathan and Ian getting ready to leave, Sharon asked, "Are you and Ian heading out, Brother-in-law?"
"They’re going to the Linden estate," Anne explained.
"Is it because David and I are here? Is there not enough room?"
"No, not at all," Anne said. "They just have something they need to do. I’ll see them out. You two just relax."
Anne walked Nathan and Ian out the door and saw them off in their car before heading back inside.
Sharon was alone in the living room; David had already gone upstairs.
Anne sat down. "Where’s your husband?"
"He said he was tired, so I told him to go take a shower and get some rest."
Sharon looked at Anne. "I’m sorry for all the trouble, Sis. Please don’t take what David said earlier to heart. He honestly just had good intentions."
"It’s fine," Anne said. "We’re family, I don’t mind. But promoting him really isn’t feasible. His current salary is already quite good. Your family should be living comfortably enough, right?"
Sharon nodded. "Yeah. After his last promotion, his income went up quite a bit, so we’re not under as much financial pressure."
"That’s good to hear," Anne said. "There’s not much more I can do to help."
Sharon looked at Anne. "Thank you, Sis."
Anne looked at her younger sister. She remembered how, in the past, Sharon’s eyes would light up with trust whenever she mentioned David...
But that wasn’t the case anymore. Now, at the mention of his name, a shadow fell over her expression.
Anne looked at Sharon. "Sharon... has he been mistreating you?"
