Chapter 231: Driving Her to Work, Encountering His Mother
There was a probing tone to Nathan Fawcett’s words.
But upon hearing them, Anne Sutton’s face flushed red with anger.
To her, his words were a downright insult.
"I’m not that kind of person! Nathan Fawcett, don’t be so conceited! If you hadn’t died, I would have moved on with someone else years ago! It’s just that whenever I think of Ian, I feel like I’ve let you down. I feel so resentful and ashamed! Do you really think no one else would have me? If I wanted to, I could get married to someone else at any time."
She couldn’t believe that her choice not to find someone new would make him mistakenly think she couldn’t live without him!
’He’s so full of himself!’
Seeing her vehement denial, Nathan Fawcett figured he had probably overthought it. "You’re right," he said. "Forget I said anything."
Anne Sutton was so furious with him that she started chopping on the cutting board with excessive force.
Watching her angry display, Nathan Fawcett raised an eyebrow and asked, "By the way, I heard you came here with Charles Prescott this time. How come you aren’t with him?"
’And here she is, staying all by herself!’
"Why would I be with him?" Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett, then paused as a thought struck her. She confronted him, "And another thing, why did you tell Charles Prescott that I like him? What’s wrong with you?"
’Now Charles Prescott really thinks I’m interested in him.’
Anne Sutton found the whole thing baffling!
’How could she possibly like Charles Prescott?’
Nathan Fawcett saying something like that was truly causing her problems.
The last thing she ever wanted was to be embarrassed in front of Charles Prescott!
Nathan Fawcett said, "You don’t like Charles Prescott? Isn’t everything you’ve done been for him? Now you’ve finally gotten your wish. Charles should be more than willing to marry you now, shouldn’t he?"
"That’s enough!" Anne Sutton felt that if this conversation continued, Nathan Fawcett would eventually drive her insane. "I’m begging you, just stop talking. I don’t like a single thing you’re saying. Go wake Ian up. The food’s almost ready, and I have to get to work after we eat."
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett stood up and went to the bedroom to wake Ian.
By the time Anne Sutton brought out breakfast, Nathan Fawcett had already hauled a half-asleep Ian out of bed and gotten him dressed.
Ian sat in his chair, still dozing off.
Nathan Fawcett looked at him and said, "If you don’t wake up, I’m going to eat all the food your mom made."
The threat worked like a charm on Ian. His eyes snapped open instantly.
Anne Sutton watched the scene, shot Nathan Fawcett a glare, and asked, "I have something else I want to ask you."
Nathan Fawcett picked up his chopsticks, ready to eat. Hearing her, he glanced up. "Go ahead."
Anne Sutton said, "Why does Ian know I’m his mother?"
’Even Ian knew, but she was the last one to find out.’
At this, Nathan Fawcett replied, "Ian figured it out himself."
"He’s so young, how could he possibly figure it out?" Anne Sutton had been wondering who told Ian.
Besides...
When Ian first went to Westhaven, he didn’t know.
He must have found out recently!
Nathan Fawcett said, "He figured it out on his own. Not everyone is as slow as you."
"..." Anne Sutton kicked him under the table. "You’re the slow one! You’re the one who kept it from me. You completely fooled me."
Thinking about it, she felt that just kicking him once was letting him off easy!
’She wished she could have stomped on his foot a few times for good measure.’
Nathan Fawcett glanced at her, the corner of his mouth curving into a slight smile. Just then, his phone buzzed. He glanced at it and saw a message from Anna Linden: "Don’t forget about the matchmaking appointment."
Nathan Fawcett’s expression darkened.
Anne Sutton saw his reaction to the message but paid him no mind, focusing on her own meal.
Ian asked, "Dad, what’s wrong?"
"It’s nothing." Nathan Fawcett put some food on his son’s plate. "Let’s eat."
He could tell that after spending the night with Anne Sutton, Ian was in much better spirits than usual.
Yesterday, when he had come home, Ian’s first reaction was to ask when Anne Sutton was coming back; he hadn’t even offered his father a single kind word.
Now that he was with Anne Sutton, he was much gentler.
Looking at Ian, Nathan Fawcett was reminded of his own childhood. Back then, he had been with his father, who was actually quite good to him, but all he ever wanted was his mother. He just wanted to be by his mother’s side.
Perhaps it was every child’s instinct.
If Anne Sutton truly loved him, and if he weren’t now Ethan Linden, Nathan Fawcett truly wouldn’t want Ian to endure the same kind of motherless childhood he had.
In front of Anne Sutton, Ian was a chatterbox who couldn’t be stopped.
He looked at Anne Sutton and asked, "Mom, do you have to work today?"
Anne Sutton nodded. She hadn’t told Nathan Fawcett that she had been transferred to his mother’s team. Her new supervisor was Anna Linden, who hated her. She had no idea how Anna might try to make her life difficult, so not going to work was out of the question.
Ian said, "Then Dad and I can take you!"
Anne Sutton said, "No, that’s okay, I can go by myself! Your dad has his own things to do."
But Ian didn’t listen to Anne Sutton. He just looked at Nathan Fawcett and asked, "Dad, can we take Mom to work? Please?"
Nathan Fawcett had been in meetings all day yesterday, so he happened to be free today. He glanced at Anne Sutton and nodded at Ian. "I don’t mind. It’s up to your mom."
Hearing this, Anne Sutton shot him a glare. Naturally, she wouldn’t refuse a request from Ian.
’This man is just passing the buck to me!’
...
After breakfast, Nathan Fawcett and Ian took Anne Sutton to work.
It worked out, since Nathan Fawcett had a car and she didn’t...
Even though they were in Veridia now, being taken to work by Nathan Fawcett and Ian reminded Anne Sutton of the times back in Westhaven when they would always come to pick her up.
The situation was similar, but because the location had changed, the feeling was completely different.
’Before, he was Nathan Fawcett, her husband. But now, he was Ethan Linden!’
’The lofty Head of the Linden Family.’
Everything was different here!
The car Nathan Fawcett was in belonged to the Linden Family.
It even had the Linden Family crest on it.
The car stopped at the hospital entrance. As Anne Sutton got out, she noticed that everyone around was staring at her.
They were all curious as to why she was getting out of a Linden Family car.
Ian looked at Anne Sutton and said, "Bye, Mom! Dad and I will come pick you up tonight."
He was absolutely beaming, his face lit up with a happy smile.
Anne Sutton looked at him and said, "Okay, you two head back now!"
Even as she said this, she knew she probably wouldn’t see Ian tonight.
Nathan Fawcett left with Ian. Just as they drove off, another Linden Family car pulled up behind them. Anne Sutton could now see that the person getting out was none other than Anna Linden.
Anna looked in the direction Nathan Fawcett had gone, then shot a complicated glance at Anne Sutton.
Chloe Chase, who was beside her, walked into the hospital, beckoning for Anne Sutton to follow them inside.
