Chapter 207: Treating a Disease
A young man's urgent voice came through the phone. "Hello, is this Mr. Zhao Dong?"
"Yes. Who is this?"
The person on the other end spoke with a nervous, anxious tone. "Mr. Zhao, I apologize for the intrusion. My name is Gu Zhou. My sister, Gu Moning, and I met you on the highway overpass a couple of days ago—I'm not sure if you remember."
Zhao Dong responded indifferently, "I remember. What's the matter?"
On the other end, Gu Zhou clenched his teeth and said, "Mr. Zhao, when we parted the other day, you mentioned that my sister's complexion didn't look good and that she might have some health issues. We didn't take it seriously, but that very night, something happened to her! Now she's unconscious, and her vital signs are extremely weak!"
His voice trembled as he hoarsely begged, "Mr. Zhao, could you please come and take a look? I'm begging you."
Zhao Dong's eyes flickered as he said pointedly, "I can help, but..."
"Mr. Zhao, rest assured! As long as you can save my sister, you can name your price!"
Zhao Dong smiled faintly. "Alright, I'll be right there. Send me the hospital room number."
After hanging up, Zhao Dong walked into the hospital.
The Gu Family is one of the four major families in East Sea, and their strength is on par with the Han Family's. It would be a great boon to have such a family work for me. Moreover, their main business is said to be in jade and jewelry, and they possess many treasured pieces. Some of that jade is extremely rare and greatly beneficial for cultivation; some pieces even contain ancient blood essence hidden within. Being on good terms with the Gu Family would naturally give me access to those jades.
With that in mind, Zhao Dong followed the room number on his phone and prepared to head upstairs. The elevator was packed, so he decided to take the stairs instead.
Just as he reached the second floor, he ran into a woman in a white lab coat. Her features were exquisite and beautiful, enough to captivate any onlooker. She was tall with long, black hair cascading down her back; her silhouette alone revealed she was a beauty.
They collided head-on, and Zhao Dong quickly apologized, "I'm sorry..."
"Zhao Dong?!"
Startled, Zhao Dong looked up, only to find it was Ding Lan.
Ding Lan was clearly surprised as well. She eyed Zhao Dong up and down before asking in confusion, "Zhao Dong, what are you doing here?"
Zhao Dong hadn't expected to run into her and paused for a moment before replying, "I'm here to see someone. Sorry about just now."
"It's nothing," Ding Lan said, pouting slightly as her brows furrowed. "Who are you here to see? Is someone sick? Can I help?"
Zhao Dong shook his head. "No need, thanks."
With that, Zhao Dong turned and continued upstairs.
Ding Lan stood frozen for a moment, a trace of grievance appearing in her eyes as she watched his somewhat distant back.
"Zhao Dong, wait a second."
Zhao Dong stopped and turned his head, looking at her with a puzzled expression. "What is it?"
Ding Lan bit her lip and said despondently, "Were you at my mother's bank today?"
Zhao Dong paused, guessing that Tian Fangmei must have told Ding Lan about him and Shen Zhuxin being at the bank.
"Yes. What about it?"
Ding Lan took a deep breath, her eyes swirling with complex emotions. "My mom said you know our bank president, that you brought a girl with you, and that you even transferred one million to her."
Zhao Dong calmly replied, "Yes. And?"
Ding Lan gave a self-mocking laugh. "Nothing. It's just that you feel like a stranger now. Are you keeping her as a mistress?"
Zhao Dong frowned. "You've misunderstood. She's a friend of mine."
"A friend you give a million to? Do you take me for a fool?"
Zhao Dong sighed. "Ding Lan, we broke up. What does this have to do with you?"
Ding Lan's eyes reddened, and her voice trembled. "It doesn't! But what you're doing now makes me question if the love I gave you was even worth it!"
"You were the one who chose to break up. Don't talk to me about these things now!"
"But I already told you! My mother forced me to break up with you! I had no choice!"
Zhao Dong stood on the stairs and Ding Lan stood below. They looked at each other as Ding Lan's eyes welled with tears.
Zhao Dong took one last look at her, sighed softly, and turned to go upstairs without another word.
As he left, Ding Lan leaned against the wall as if all her strength had been drained from her body. After being lost in a daze for a long time, she finally mustered her strength and walked away.
「Meanwhile, Zhao Dong had already arrived at the hospital's 18th floor.」
The Gu Family's room was located at the very end of the hall. Inside the luxurious room, Gu Moning lay on the hospital bed, her face deathly pale. Beside her stood her parents, her younger brother, Gu Zhou, and another young man.
The young man was distinguished and carried an air of nobility. He was Gu Moning's childhood friend—Guo Chao.
While the Guo Family's standing couldn't match the Gu Family's, and they weren't one of the four major families, their growth had been formidable over the past two years, and their strength was considerable. Furthermore, Guo Chao had studied abroad and was quite shrewd. In the two years he had been in charge, the Guo Family's business had soared remarkably.
This made Gu Moning's parents very optimistic about him.
At this moment, Guo Chao adjusted his glasses and said to Gu Moning's father, Gu Qihui, "Uncle, you don't have to worry too much. The director of East Sea Hospital is a friend of my father, and I've already contacted him. He has postponed two surgeries and will be here to treat Moning shortly."
Gu Moning's mother, Hu Na, said with gratitude, "Thank you, Xiao Chao. It must have been a lot of trouble for you, worrying about Moning in this state!"
Guo Chao smiled. "Auntie, you're too kind. Moning and I have known each other since we were young. Now that she's in trouble, it's only natural that I help."
Gu Qihui added, "That's right. We're all family, so we won't stand on ceremony with you, Xiao Chao!"
Hearing this, Guo Chao was overjoyed. This meant Gu Qihui had truly accepted him! His greatest goal right now was to marry Gu Moning. After all, she was stunningly beautiful, and her father, Gu Qihui, was currently in control of the Gu Family Corporation. Since Gu Qihui had a low opinion of Gu Zhou, the corporation would definitely be passed down to Moning. This meant that once he became Gu Qihui's son-in-law, the Gu Family Corporation would one day be his!
Just then, Gu Zhou spoke up hesitantly. "Dad, Mom, Brother Guo Chao… I actually invited someone over, too. He was the one who said something was wrong with Sis's health the other day. Sis and I didn't believe him, but I just called him. He'll be here shortly."
Gu Qihui was taken aback. "There's such a talented person? What's his name?"
Gu Zhou shook his head. "I don't know his name, but he's very young, about our age."
Hu Na was also shocked. "There's a young man in East Sea who can tell Moning has a health problem with just one glance? Isn't he a miracle doctor?"
Guo Chao interjected from the side, "Xiao Zhou, the world is full of swindlers. You can't just believe everything people say. He might have just made a lucky guess!"
Gu Zhou shook his head. "No, he can't be a swindler."
A look of disdain appeared in Guo Chao's eyes. Gu Zhou is just a rich, idle heir, completely lacking ambition and capability. All he does is eat, drink, and party. He completely looked down on Gu Zhou and naturally scoffed at his words. Gu Qihui and Hu Na were also skeptical. After all, in their eyes, Gu Zhou was just an incompetent child.
Seeing their doubtful looks, Gu Zhou became flustered. "Dad, Mom, don't you believe me either?"
Gu Qihui frowned. "Xiao Zhou, you're still young and easily deceived by swindlers! You should spend your free time learning from Guo Chao. He's not much older than you, but look how outstanding he is. And look at you! All you know is how to party!"
"What's wrong with that? We have more money than we could ever spend. With you and Sis around, I'm happy to live like this!"
"Look at you! Ugh, you're hopeless!" Gu Qihui sighed and turned to Guo Chao. "Xiao Chao, this is just how Xiao Zhou is. Please don't mind him."
Guo Chao smiled. "It's alright. Xiao Zhou, we can talk more when we're free. If there's anything you don't understand, I can explain it to you. You're a grown man now; it's time you learned how the world works."
Gu Zhou's mouth twitched, and he silently cursed 'bastard' under his breath. He actually had a poor opinion of Guo Chao. Although Guo Chao was capable, he was also a notorious womanizer who had been with countless women in East Sea. Seeing that Guo Chao had designs on his sister, Gu Zhou was naturally furious, but he couldn't bring himself to say anything, leaving him deeply frustrated.
Just as they were speaking, the door to the ward was pushed open, and Zhao Dong walked in.
Gu Zhou's face lit up. "Mr. Zhao!"
Guo Chao and Gu Moning's parents all looked over, their faces immediately clouding over.
Gu Qihui frowned. "Xiao Zhou, is this the person you were talking about?"
"Yes, Dad! This is Mr. Zhao!" Gu Zhou said excitedly.
Hu Na's brow furrowed with skepticism. "He's so young... He doesn't look like someone who knows medicine, does he?"
Ignoring them, Zhao Dong walked straight to the bedside. He glanced at Gu Moning and his pupils contracted slightly. Just as I predicted that day! He looked at the three members of the Gu family and said, "I can treat this condition. But before I do, let's discuss my fee."
Gu Qihui was taken aback and exchanged a strange look with Hu Na.
Gu Zhou hurriedly interjected, "Dad, Mom! This is Mr. Zhao! He saw that something was wrong with Sis's health with just a glance that day! He can definitely cure her!"
Guo Chao, however, spoke with displeasure. "Xiao Zhou! This is no time for jokes! Your sister needs to be seen by a proper doctor! I've already invited the hospital director. Tell this man to leave!"
Gu Zhou's face flushed. "Brother Guo Chao! Mr. Zhao, he..."
Before he could finish, Gu Qihui cut him off coldly. "Xiao Zhou, get this person out of here immediately. Your Brother Guo Chao has invited the director, so your sister will be fine. Besides, you don't even know this man's background. Judging by his age and appearance, he clearly doesn't know anything about medicine. Tell him to leave."
Gu Zhou grew desperate. "Dad, Mom! How can you say that about Mr. Zhao? He's truly no ordinary person!"
"Gu Zhou! Are you done yet?!" Gu Qihui snapped, his tone sharp with reprimand.
Gu Zhou's face turned ashen, and he looked at Zhao Dong with shame. "Mr. Zhao, I..."
Zhao Dong smiled. "It's fine. If you don't believe me, so be it. Treat her yourselves. Just don't come begging me for help later."
As Zhao Dong said this, he started walking toward the door. Gu Zhou rushed to stop him, but Gu Qihui bellowed, "Gu Zhou, have you lost your mind? Letting some random kid treat your sister? Stay right where you are!"
Gu Zhou looked at his father, his face a mask of indignation and hurt as he bit his lip. "Dad! Why won't you trust me for once?"
"Trust you? My ass! You're always up to some nonsense! Just stay put and behave yourself!"
Guo Chao smiled smugly and stepped forward to pat Gu Zhou's shoulder. "Xiao Zhou, you're old enough now, you should have better judgment. Anyone could see that man was a nobody! It's no wonder your uncle is angry."
Gu Zhou clenched his teeth, his face burning with humiliation, but he couldn't find the words to argue back.
Just then, the door to the ward opened again. This time, it was He Haisheng, the Director of East Sea Hospital, who entered, accompanied by two chief physicians.
