Chapter 129: Encountering Jiang Nianyu
A girl stumbled in, reeking of alcohol. Her face bore a striking resemblance to Song Qingwan. She immediately collapsed into a chair, her face flushed, clearly having had a lot to drink.
Zhao Dong was startled. "Who is this?"
Song Qingwan's expression turned slightly unnatural. With a soft sigh, she said, "My sister, Song Xuan."
Only then did Zhao Dong remember that Song Qingwan had a sister. He glanced at Song Xuan and saw that she was exceedingly beautiful, her features even more youthful and innocent than Song Qingwan's. However, her fiery, sexy attire was completely at odds with her appearance. Song Xuan wore a camisole, a miniskirt, and thigh-high boots, revealing an undeniably tempting figure.
Hearing a man's voice, she cracked her eyes open. They landed on Zhao Dong, and she frowned. "Sis, who is this guy?"
Song Qingwan replied awkwardly, "Xuan, this is my friend, Zhao Dong."
"Your friend?" Song Xuan's brows knitted together. She gave Zhao Dong a once-over, and her expression grew even stranger when she noticed he was shirtless. "Your friend is half-naked in our house in the middle of the night?"
Song Qingwan froze, her gaze shifting away. "Xuan, his clothes… I wasn't paying attention and got them wet. Then the boiling water… I accidentally scalded him, so I was applying…"
"Stop explaining! I don't want to hear it," Song Xuan said impatiently. "You have the right to pursue your own happiness; no one is stopping you. Why do you feel the need to explain so much to me?"
Her reaction struck Zhao Dong as odd.
Song Qingwan opened her mouth but no words came out. She just sighed softly. "Why did you drink so much?"
"Like you care?" Song Xuan retorted coolly. "What's with the act?"
A sharp pain shot through Song Qingwan's heart. When their parents were dying in the hospital after a car accident, she hadn't been able to make it back in time. Her flight was delayed, and by the time she arrived, they were already gone. Song Xuan had resented her ever since. The two sisters had relied on each other since they were little. Later, to improve their lives, Song Qingwan had thrown herself into her work and career, but in doing so, had neglected her younger sister. For years, despite being sisters, Song Xuan had been cold and impatient with her. Song Qingwan knew she was partly at fault, so she always gave in to her.
She sighed softly. "Xuan, you can't drink so much when you're out. Go upstairs and get some rest."
Song Xuan scoffed, "Oh, trying to get rid of me? Am I interrupting your little tryst?"
Zhao Dong frowned, a flash of anger in his eyes.
Song Qingwan couldn't believe such insulting words were coming from the sister she had always cherished.
"Xuan, shut your mouth!"
In a surge of anger, she slapped her. A clear, red handprint quickly appeared on Song Xuan's fair, tender cheek, which began to swell slightly.
In an instant, however, the seeds of regret took root. Song Qingwan stared at her own hand in disbelief.
Song Xuan covered her face, incredulous. "Sis, you actually hit me for some strange man."
"I didn't mean to…" Song Qingwan's eyes reddened with guilt.
Clutching her face, tears welling in her eyes, Song Xuan cried, "Song Qingwan, have you lost your mind? I'm your own sister, and you hit me for an outsider! Is a stranger more important to you than your own family?"
She then added coldly, "Now I get it. It's just like when Mom and Dad died years ago—you've never cared about our family! Hitting me for some strange man... only you would do something like that!"
"Shut your mouth!" Song Qingwan's chest heaved with anger, her eyes brimming with tears.
Zhao Dong frowned, annoyed at being needlessly scolded. But when he saw the school backpack slung over Song Xuan's shoulder, his anger subsided. At the same time, he realized something else was off about her.
Her state... this isn't just from drinking. It looks like she's on drugs!
Her heart aching, Song Qingwan finally managed to say through her tears, "Xuan, he saved my life. It's not what you think."
Song Xuan just sneered, her gaze wild. Zhao Dong was taken aback. He looked at her intently and said, "You're high, aren't you?"
Song Qingwan's face went white. "Xuan, you…"
Song Xuan's expression faltered for a second before she retorted, "No, I'm not! What are you talking about?"
Zhao Dong smirked and looked at Song Qingwan. "You should keep a closer eye on your sister. She's out here getting fooled by people and doesn't even realize it."
Song Qingwan felt as if she were looking at a complete stranger. In her efforts to provide an affluent life for her sister, she had neglected her discipline and allowed her to go astray.
"Song Xuan, are you crazy?" she snapped. "How could you touch that stuff? You are forbidden from seeing those friends of yours ever again!"
Song Qingwan felt her vision go dark. Her body went weak, and she slumped onto the sofa.
Song Xuan just pouted and said icily, "My friends are way better than you. At least they don't ignore me like you do! I'd rather do drugs."
"You—"
Song Qingwan raised her hand to strike her again, but Song Xuan just tilted her head back, a cold smirk on her face.
Tears streamed down Song Qingwan's cheeks. Her hand fell limply to her side, all her strength seemingly drained away.
"Well, bye. You two continue. I'm going upstairs to rest." Song Xuan sneered, then turned and ran up to her room.
BANG!
The door slammed shut with a deafening noise.
Song Qingwan's cool façade finally cracked. With a pained expression, she slowly sank to the ground.
Zhao Dong said gravely, "Your sister is definitely on drugs. You need to take this seriously."
"What am I supposed to do…" Tears streamed down Song Qingwan's face, her body devoid of strength.
Zhao Dong helped her onto the sofa and handed her a tissue. Taking it, she choked out, "I'm so sorry you had to see that. Our parents died when we were young. I've always been so busy trying to make a living that I… I neglected her."
"You're a great sister," Zhao Dong said in a low voice.
Silence fell over the living room. After a moment, Song Qingwan composed herself and whispered, "Today… I'm really sorry you had to witness such a scene." Then, seeing Zhao Dong's bare chest, she suddenly felt extremely flustered. "I'll… I'll get you some clothes."
Watching her hurry away, Zhao Dong finally felt a sense of relief.
Every family has its own problems, I guess. Even a glamorous star like Song Qingwan has her own vexing family matters.
"This is the best I could find. You'll have to make do for now." Song Qingwan quickly returned with some clothes. They were a bit small, as she likely had no men's clothing in the house and had grabbed something from her own androgynous-styled wardrobe.
"It's fine." Zhao Dong wasn't picky, though the shirt was indeed a bit tight. "Well, I won't bother you any longer. It's getting late."
As an outsider who had gotten involved in her family affairs, he knew he had overstepped and that it was time to leave.
Holding the clothes he was to wear, Song Qingwan bit her lip and whispered, "You can just leave your shirt here. It was scalded and ruined. I'll get you a new one to replace it."
Zhao Dong was taken aback and scratched his head. "It's all right, you don't have to trouble yourself."
"It's really no trouble. Just leave it here," Song Qingwan insisted, biting her lip.
Zhao Dong rubbed his nose and coughed twice. Not wanting to argue, he set his old shirt down. He glanced at Song Qingwan one last time before turning to leave.
"I'll see you out," she said, quickly following him.
"No need. You should stay in the villa. Besides, given who you are, it would be inconvenient."
Song Qingwan paused for a moment, then nodded softly. "All right. Be careful on your way home."
Zhao Dong got into his car, cast one last look at Song Qingwan's villa, and then started the engine and drove away.
As his car sped through the bustling night, he replayed the day's events in his mind. He couldn't help but marvel at the strangeness of fate. To think I'd get involved with Song Qingwan… An image of her alluring curves unexpectedly flashed through his mind, and he felt a rush of heat. He cursed himself internally and refocused his thoughts.
He arrived in the city and was passing through an intersection when he was surprised to see a familiar car waiting at the red light.
Isn't that Jiang Nianyu's Panamera?
The car wasn't moving. Zhao Dong pulled up beside it and honked a few times. Jiang Nianyu's window stayed up, so Zhao Dong rolled his own down and smiled. "Hey, playing it cool? Not even a hello for someone you know?"
The window remained up. Zhao Dong squinted and realized there seemed to be other people in the car. He was startled. He got out and knocked on Jiang Nianyu's window.
The window rolled down. Jiang Nianyu was in the driver's seat, with a man in the passenger seat and another in the back.
Zhao Dong grinned. "Where are you off to so late?"
Jiang Nianyu looked extremely uncomfortable. She glanced at him and stammered, "I-I have something to do. What are you doing here?"
"Just passing by. Who are these two? Friends of yours?"
The man in the passenger seat revealed a set of yellowed teeth in a humorless smile. "Buddy, we're busy. Let's chat another day." Turning to Jiang Nianyu, he said, "You can go now."
Jiang Nianyu nodded numbly. Ignoring Zhao Dong, she drove off.
Zhao Dong frowned. He mulled it over for three seconds, and his heart sank. Something's wrong! Jiang Nianyu has been kidnapped!
Without another thought, he jumped back into his car and sped after her Panamera.
